Hello everyone and welcome to a new video!
Ever since I made my 18th century stays, I wanted to make more wearable stays/vests sort of items for every day wear. I had already used the Simplicity 8162 pattern (the 18th century stays pattern inspired by Outlander and made by American Duchess) for a pair of stays ages ago and I liked that they were comfortable and cute, while still giving that 18th century vibe. I altered it a fair bit by making it up to my size and adding slack so it could lace nearly closed without much pressure, and by removing the tabs at the bottom. For the other best, I used the Butterick B4669 pattern (which I think has been a staple of ren fair looks for ages haha and that was exactly the vibes I wanted). I used view A and sized it up to my size as I ordered the wrong size range. I also altered it a bit so that the gap at the front was smaller, so I found it more wearable and less jarring to modern eyes. I also added a line of machine embroidery at the neckline and the bottom edge just for a cute detail.
Both of these vests fit really well, are very comfortable, and are spot on for the #hobbitstyle and #cottagecore aesthetic I was going for. I would say they are also relatively easy to tackle, if you've only just started sewing but would like some cute items in your wardrobe :)

So sorry about the sound glitch! Something must have gone wrong in the exporting. Unfortunately KZbin won’t let me replace the file, but I’ll double check the captions asap and I hope it’s okay to get through those bits with captions 😓

I though that I'm the only one who gets attached to fabric! Same Cat, same. But even worse is my attachment to lace, I just can't bring myself to cut it. I think that it's this way because all my lace is vintage (hand me down from my Grandma) but who knows.

I’m just going to say a big thank you, many assume that people watching their channels know the basics already, but I never could figure out the basting. I knew what it was for, I knew the importance, but I finally got a good view of how you actually did it in your filming angle. Thank you also for going over the tips you know for it. Things that are maybe “obvious” but my ADHD and other such issues would have made remembering and understanding all that intuitively a bit difficult.

A couple of tips using bolt cutters. 1 Open the handle arms all the way and 2 put the item being cut as far into the jaws as it will go. This will give you the best mechanical advantage when cutting. Also, place one handle and the jaws on the floor and push down on the raised handle with both hands using your upper body weight. Place one foot on the lower handle to help stabilize. Might save your back! I would also use a metal file to round the cut ends of the metal stays. It will last longer!

How sweet these vests look on you. I must observe that over the time I have been watching your youtube channel that your sewing skills have really improved. You do a lovely, quality, sewing job. You don't seem to feel you must rush, but take pleasure in each step, and do lovely handwork on your projects. Always honing your skills. And you have your own style and know what it is! What a pleasure to watch you work. Thanks for sharing.

I have those same patterns and made them for myself!! They look beautiful on you too! I didn't hand sew the holes though. I don't have enough patience for that. I used grommet type things for the holes. I loved your fabrics and you will be able to wear them all year long. The boning really did help. I will be adding that to mine so it will lay flatter on me. Loved the music and watching all of the hand sewing. You are so talented and a real inspiration for me. Thanks so much!

If you ever make another one of these vests or different smaller garment would you consider a step by step instructional video along with the pattern instructions? Pattern reading and the way the instructions are worded is still pretty intimidating.

Dear Cat, no shame! I’d lay 100 to 1 odds that the majority of crafters (Noelle excluded) have an area stacked and packed in much the same manner. Mine’s in my garage at the moment. Both pieces turned out so cute!

You just got me out of my five weeks slump. Thank you. I'm having a problem with my patterning, and I have no idea what it is (probably a mistake with the measuring). And I've lost my spark of creativity. But I was just able to buy the perfect red wool for a project I have wanted to do for the last two and a half years, it's coming tomorrow! It also helps that we have very similar tastes in fashion. I also realized two days ago that my costume for Halloween won't work, because I wear glasses and don't have contacts, haha. Justice is blind, and I can't tie a blindfold over my glasses. Perhaps I'll go as Nemesis.

I used that vest pattern to make a vest/stays pattern mix. Really cute. Easier than true blue stays but gives you the general idea of stays. I straightened the bust curve out to make the conical shape and added boning. But kept the three pieces and strap. I also added a more pointed front and shortened the waist because my waist is really high.

All the Hobbit vibes Cat!! If Hobbit-core is your sub-cottagecore aesthetic and it makes you feel good, HELL YA MAKE ALL THE THINGS! And this seems like a great project to dedicate small stash fabric that you love to. YO THAT TRICK WITH THE BOBBY PINS TO THREAD YOUR STAYS!!! Mind blown! And did you do some decorative stitching around the neckline of the brown vest? Subtle touch but so cute!! So adorable. Perfect for fall (and all year round truthfully)

They're beautiful! Hooray for making more everyday things! I need to make more everyday waistcoats too, I wear the same brown wool one all the time when it's cold and it's getting shabby. Also your mustard yellow shirt is so, so gorgeous, it's making me want to make myself an 18th century shirt in that colour too.

They were both lovely. Although, I think the brown one was actually more flattering, which was odd, because I took one look at the beautiful printed fabric and fell in love - but the softness of that rich brown must be right in your colour range because it looked so beautiful on - pointing out that the print wasn't too far behind in gorgeousness. I'd love to see one day - if the binding on the print ever gets worn, for you to swap out the brown and see what the print would look like with another colour picked out for binding - like the orange or the lilac. Just out of curiosity - I'm loving each of the items you're including into your wardrobe - the colours are always on point!

Ooooooh! I adore the lacing on the back of the vest! Yes, I will be adding another to my wardrobe. I'm on my 5th piece. LOL I make mine reversible so I get 2 for the work of one. I sew the "inside" and "outside" completely together and use binding for the raw edges to finish. My newest alteration is adding more fabric to the front so they will overlap, button hole one side and button both sides with the same size buttons to fit the button holes. I'm a curvy 5ft 8in lady, so mine will have to be less hobbit-y and more giant-y. Your stitching is gorgeous! You've inspired me to try the edges finished without the binding. New subscriber.

Like so many others I've been thinking about making vests from Stays Patterns. 🤔 ...now I'm just gonna have to DO it! ...I'm thinking denim...from old jeans. Recycle! I also have a knitting pattern for such a garment. But I've been avoiding it because it contains cable stitches. ...not my forté. Methinks I shall have to dive in on that one. It's just too cute!

I'm actually jealous of your curves, I'm tall and boney with out much curviness to me. You are absolutely beautiful. I think with autumn in the air everyone is starting to feel the call of the Shire. Hobbit core seems to be in the air. While everyone is making aprons you are making vests. I need to sort out my sewing machine issues and make my own vests and aprons. We just started our fall crops about a month ago and we are hoping for a fall harvest of squash and beans. Specifically our pumpkins. If that does scream Shire at you I don't know what does. Especially since I'm holding onto barefoot weather for as long as I can. The good thing about living in the desert is that you can enjoy those Hobbity vibes up until late November. 😉

I definitely have a few vests/waistcoats on my list, though I don’t have the dexterity to do lacing on all my clothes, so I’m thinking buttons will be quicker and easier.
