In today's video, I re-make the Rijksmuseum Reticule and talk about the history of pockets from the 17th century on. And yes, I am aware that they also had pockets and pocket bags in earlier centuries but I chose to focus on this century and later since this is where we have extant examples to study.

That reticule is so pretty! I went to a wedding dressed in a 1780s Italian gown. (The bride & groom encouraged people to dress like they're in Hamilton, so it's not random, I swear). I had two pockets, not fancy or anything, but big. I didn't have pocket hoops or panniers (it looked like those weren't really worn with such gowns, just rump pads). The looks on peoples' faces when I started pulling my cellphone, tons of tissues, chapstick, granola bars, etc. out of my dress... 🤣

I'm always impressed by how accurately you're able to reproduce these historical embroidery designs. Even if it's not the same embroidery technique, I don't know enough about hand embroidery to tell the difference, your designs look spot on.

that is so awesome. i am Dutch and I moved to Amsterdam myself 8 years ago. my mother has studied art history and always took me to musea and churches. so naturally this awoke my love of art. and I have to the Rijksmuseum multiple times. but I never heard of these amazing dresses. I came to your channel via the video of kate rowe. One the other thing I learned from my mother (and she learned it from my father's mother)was embroidery. your video really inspired my and I'm looking forward to exploring your content ❤

I like how they pre-embroider the waistcoats, and use the "scrap" area for the button covers. Sort of semi-custom.

Thanks for sharing this. I enjoyed it immensely and am rather envious of your being able to study the original and other garments at the museum. The reticule is something I would carry around with my daily clothes. Over the years, I've gone and redone sewing projects because of what I learned over time. Looking back I have fond memories of a Issey Miyake blouse that I made in college and loved to wear. The truth is that the construction is horrid but I loved it. 36 years later, I found the Vogue pattern and plan on remaking the blouse.

When my goddaughter was getting married in 2018 she went to a bridal salon dreading the process.The second dress she tried was a simple satin sweetheart with a band at the waist. She bought it, why?… it had pockets. She was ecstatic. No wedding dress she’d seen before had them.🇺🇸

I've seen a modern ad of the novelty bag made specifically for carrying a bottle of champagne 😂 the fashion industry is a bit crazy. The bag was from a widely recognizable brand like Gucci or something.
