Also, it must be practical, otherwise people won't use it and be seen in the street with it. Perhaps there is inspiration to be taken from what the stars and royals are wearing, both in terms of bags and clothes.

Just an idea, because I enjoy the brain gymnastics: The cost of living inside the cities is increasing to the point of forcing workers to commute longer and longer, often by public transport. A bag that suits that lifestyle change? What do people like to take with them on the subway/train? Can it be carried with deforming the bag within a short period of time?

1. Original design therefore instantly recognisable as designer bag (snob appeal !) 2. Released in limited quantity (clever marketing) 3. Practical (not always a priority but séparates the men from the boys !) 4. High quality materials (this factor beginning to evolve - ref Stella McCartney bags not exactly sturdy !) 5. Sported by a celebrity (obligatory !!!)

Ok. I'm 47 frumpy and have taken on the taste in clothes from my mom and grandmother. They would actually give me their hand me downs as we had not much money. My jeans were from my brother until I sprouted past him in height. LOL. I have to say Justine I am new to your channel but am learning so much. Such a good summary of the history of handbags! And I'd like to tell you, Justine, that you're helping me come to terms with my small teeth! I have small teeth and a big smile, like you, and show a lot of gum when I smile. It's been an insecurity of mine, but your recent video about 10 French beauty secrets and keeping your uniqueness is truly a helpful way of thinking! If anyone in the comments is interested in the history of fashion, there's a channel called The Ultimate Fashion History that is run by (I think) a fashion history professor at a university. It's excellent if you enjoy fashion through the ages.

Merci, Justine!! As a history major and handbag enthusiast, this presentation has quickly become a favorite! What makes an iconic handbag? One that will stand the test of time. The Kelly, the Birkin,--these will always be in style. What makes a handbag "great" for me is one that does exactly what it should at the time I am using it. A fun, nautical tote for on the ship. A vintage, beaded evening bag for a more formal occasion. A practical, small crossbody for a day of shopping. For everyday use, the most classic and well-made bag that I can afford. Other than the amazing wedding ring my husband presented to me, my handbags are what seem to define me.

I love your vibe Justine! Thank you for all the information. I am a life long tomboy, recently rediscovering, accepting, and enjoying my femininity at the age of 45. Hi Justine! I absolutely LOVE your channel! Like many have been saying, your channel has made me realise that not only am I really interested in fashion, but it has taught me how to escape the fast fashion trend and commit to fewer, more high quality pieces! I love how put-together every video is, and this one was no exception. The only issue I have is that I believe the title should be "A brief history of handbags in the Western world". This is because from my own research and knowledge, there is a long and rich history of bags on other continents and among Native Americans and indigenous peoples from all over the world to make bags beautiful as well as functional, and elaborate bags designed well before the Middle Ages and even before the Greeks and Romans! Anyway, I know it's too much to include in one video, but for this reason I suggest making the name more reflective of just one part of the world.

Merci, Justine! I've always been bewildered by minaudières, but your note about regarding them as jewelry suddenly makes them...well...make more sense. On the million-dollar question: Having a glamorous celebrity photographed with a bag can help make it iconic, but design, materials, & construction are equally important. The best ones are as eminently practical as they are beautiful.

Thank you, Justine. My grandmother, who was born in Victorian times, called her handbag a "pocketbook," which I loved. I'm sure that word is much older than she was. I think maybe the ancient string bags were called pockets in old English, but when pockets were integrated into clothes and the outside bags with more structure came along they needed a new name. "Purse" is another very old word, but we still use it commonly.

What actually makes a bag iconic?... Something which is not just beautiful, but practical and stands the test of time. Something which is wearable with different outfit, and lasts many years. It has to make the investment worth it, but is also the representation of something we will like to emulate or become, especially if actresses or vip wear it. My bags tell the story of who I am and/or want to be. By the way, I have an all black longchamp (practical) and I am saving up for a Yves Saint Laurent Sac du Jour in bright fire red (formal but fun, in my opinion!) Love your videos XD Greetings from Scotland

Did you ever visit the handbag museum in Amsterdam? That is wonderfull, their oldest pieces are from the Renaissance, and they have, besides the well-known classics, really experimental (or should I say freaky) stuff like a matching set of bag and pumps made of toad skin. They also sell a catalogue which is very extensive.

Excellent, excellent video!!! I used to be obsessed with bags, different colors, styles, for different occasions...but then I had to sell all my belongings before a major move. I'm more into function these days. I prefer a cross body with a long enough strap, zippered pockets on the outside for keys and phone and a soft, flexible material. Stiff bags can be beautiful but my hands get scratched by the zippers. My favorite bag is one my mom made from an old black and white Hawaiian shirt. She also made a beautiful little purse out of a men's tweed jacket.

I used to have many different kinds of bags but the only bags I really use now are hobo bags from linnen or cotton (unless it`s a formal occasion). I love that they are so light and the very broad straps that don`t cut into the shoulder. I`ve sewn a really large double sided one for shopping too and it`s just so comfortable.

Another stellar video! Merci beaucoup Justine! I myself am a shoe girl. Purses for me need to be practical, esthetically pleasing to me, proportionally balanced to my frame and outfit. As long as it does not interfere with my ensemble of the day, I'm good to go. As for your question about an iconic bag, an answer might be the test of time. The Lady Dior bag, the Classic Chanel quilted bag, Hermes Kelly and Birkin bags, the Louis Vuitton speedy bag, Fendi clutch, today the Cult Gaia bag etc. I haver never gravitated to iconic bags. Too widespread for me. 😊

Huzzah the Kelly Bag! I hoped you'd mention it! She often posed with it over her stomach when she was hiding her pregnancy. I'm so glad you went from the Middle Ages and showed the split! Because like pink being a girl's color and heels being a girl's thing, it shows these notions are all fluid! I'm so pleased with this video. I'm definitely adding this to my "show friends" playlist. Maybe a video about things we take for granted, like pockets and readily available buttons and zippers would be good. I know in the Middle Ages up, the pockets were a separate piece of fabric you tied or buttoned under your skirt, which had slits in it to reach into the pockets. The nursery rhyme, "Lucky Locket lost her pocket, Kitty Fisher found it. Not a penny was there in it, only ribbon 'round it," alludes to it. Maybe also mentioning how some dyes were so hard to come by, especially blue, would be cool. There's so much in fashion we take for granted that I think there's enough for a solid video there. Just an idea!

Your best! Iconic bag = functional, chic, hands-free, perfect craftsmanship, durable materials, expensive but not unaffordable. Go for it, Justine! The world is waiting. Also, a variety of colors. Fascinating handbag history. You should do a video on how to choose a versatile colored bag that are any season (spring, summer, fall, winter) besides neutral colored bags (black, brown, white, tan, taupe, cream). Many women have difficulty styling their outfits with brightly colored bags. Decision on when the purse should be the focal point or their outfit should be the focal point.

Love your videos! I’m just watching them one after another! What makes an iconic bag is a bag that does not have too many pockets or features. Clean lines and simple flaps, pockets, zippers, and at a decent size depending on the person’s body frame makes an iconic bag. I personally think a bucket back is a classic. I have an 80’s Fendi checkered bucket bag I got off Etsy for $100 and it’s been through a lot. I had other bags and ended up selling or giving them away first before this bag because they don’t serve the same purpose. Since I have been through with so many cheap and low quality bags, I would love to own a new designer bag someday though. I’m eyeing on YSL nano sac de jour, Balenciaga city bag, Mansur Gavriel or a Proenza Schouler bag; these are on my wish list! Anyway, great video and brief history! France has a long history of bag designers and I find it so amazing that they have come a long way into making themselves known in fashion history. P.s. Will you do a video on wallets?? :)

I think what makes it iconic is a combination of simplicity, versatile wearability, well promoted image or PR, or the false or real feeling that it is a necessity, and massive attractiveness to a wide variety of people over multiple generations. Just my thoughts. I am a new subscriber, I love how interesting you make your content, and the passion you show for your work. Can you do the history of clothing dyes, pattern making. Thank you, dear Justine! It's such a pleasure to watch your videos. I always want more and more of them! I'd love to know more about fashion history particularly from you. Could you make a separate playlist dedicated to fashion history? That would be sooo interesting Greetings from Ukraine

Fascinating information, as always! Justine, could you do a video on what should be coordinated with what in an outfit? The bag with the shoe? The shoe with the dress? The dress with the jacket? It's all super confusing for me....

An iconic bag is the one that goes with iconic (read: timeless, classy) outfit.. Otherwise it won't look right... Did I win a million dollars? 🙃 Thanks Justine, I enjoyed this video. Great start for Sunday morning!

So informative! Merci~ love your vlogs! I love how Paris does a Longchamps in a new color every season! These light bags are perfect for shopping! I've thought much about becoming a handbag designer, but don't really know how to get started. Purses/handbags have been my favorite accessory for over 40 years!

I do love a dose of history & I have always liked the smaller bags for going out. How funny but practical to have a purse in a dress (now they're pockets)... & I like what you said about young girls who can't afford a designer bag.....yet .... 😊😎💗

Justine I always enjoy your videos! The one about how the French eat made so much sense- eating the largest meal at noon- I'm starting to change how I'm eating(amount and time) and I think it will give me more energy in the afternoon. This video about the history of the handbag was very interesting, well thought out

All I know is that you always continue to educate me. Once when I was second hand shopping, I reached in behind a deep rack of black leather bags and pulled out the most buttery leather hobo bag my hand had ever felt. It was a Coach bag. This company was founded from inspiration of the baseball glove. ;b

A coworker bought a second hand Coach bag. It is beautiful and shows no wear. It is a russet color. She's had it a few years, accidently spilled coffee all over it, and it still looks new.
