It's more fun to do Let's Plays of games that are intensive on strategy, logistics, and inventory management. That way, you'll always have something interesting to talk about. Borderlands 1 and 2 are a good examples. You can play through them 87 bazillion times and still find something new.

Bart's Nightmare is actually pretty cool, all levels are pretty inventive and relatively easy to clear when you know what you CAN and are SUPPOSED to do... except for the Indiana Bart level, which is unbelievably difficult unless you know exactly where to step; a lot of tedious backtracking is required.

Most of this is just overreacting to what's happening in the game. I mean what makes let's plays entertaining is the personality of the person playing, them being themselves. This is just the critic in constant rage mode for every little thing, always just acting. And it doesn't work as the Critic's humor because there's no build up or setup, no variation, and a lot of what he's reacting to is just mundane. Plus, reacting to every single moment instead of editing and picking out moments to concentrate on leads to it dragging on. The likes of Nostalgia Critic and AVGN are oversensitive and ragey to things that don't really matter, it's part of their whole comedy. But you know that in real life people like that would really be annoying and dull to be around, and to put that kind of character in a real personal setting like this makes that really come out. I mean this would of worked fine if Nostalgia Critic started more laid back, and built up to his rage, and maybe if he told some personal stories about some really bad movies he'd seen and made some elaborate comparisons about them to the game or something. But all we get is the rage aspect, the surface icon of his character. This video, ironically, is a soulless spin-off.

The reason this video and Bebe's Kids didn't work is because Doug felt that he must constantly entertain others by talking (and shrieking) non-stop. Pretty obvious, but I just like to reflect as to why that is. That barely-have-time-for-a-breath narration here is just indicative of someone who was socially insecure--someone who had a lack of confidence in the power of silence in a belief that any silent pauses would result in others' boredom and disinterest. He was competing with the entertainment factor of the game itself--a good Let's Play needs balance between the two, but he clearly won out in the end, and not in a good way. If he continued these, but set aside his character and acted as himself, as well as learned to utilize these much needed pauses, he could have been really successful doing LPs.

The tragedy is that it turned Doug off from doing anything video game related for several years until Dragon's Lair 1 & 2. And even then it might be his last. One thing the NC hasn't done is a crossover video game review with AVGN, usually they just get together for movies or shows.

You didn't try any of the stuff that makes this game fun. Jump over the basketball and it gives you a skateboard, that's fun and the longer you stay on it fills your Z bar. And you didn't use your watermelon seeds to ward bad guys off.

I guess there's no accounting for taste but this is actually one of my favorite reviews of his. It's a different approach than that of the AVGN but I can still relate because I saw myself when I watched this. I remember playing this game as a kid and it makes me feel better to know that I wasn't the only one out there who got fed up with it. And the ending gets me every time as well, a) because it's all in his delivery and b) because again I see myself lol.

Honestly this isn't even that bad a let's play.... I've definitely seen worse. However with Doug, it just doesn't seem natural. He's a reviewer and movie fanatic, not a gaming guy. This is a format that's unfamiliar to him, so yeah, it's gonna be a little rough around the edges. We all remember the great let's players of today, well they started out like this. Uncomfortable, cringe-y at times, and still trying to get a feel for the field and find their style. So had Doug continued doing let's plays, he probably would've gotten better and more comfortable and even developed his own unique commentary style.

The sad thing about this is most people becoming famous for let's plays these days are doing the exact same thing Doug was doing here. Forced panic, overreactions and just generally feeling very staged instead of being natural while playing the game. It just becomes about the let's player's ego creating a personality that's more akin to an over the top gameshow host who's easier to scare and frustrate than a five year old, all because that's how the popular ones get views. By comparison, the Bebe's Kids video was more in tone with Nostalgia Critic let's playing naturally.

I remember my mom getting me SNES for Christmas, along with this game, when I was 13. Every year, we opened our gifts on Christmas Eve. That night, we went to church service at my junior high school. I couldn’t wait to get home and open what I knew was under the tree. I miss those simpler times when the holidays were exciting. Getting old sucks.

I love this video. I love his real time reactions. I feel that if this were to be released just a few years later, it would not have received as much hate as it did back then. It's very normal to have people play and simply react to things now and honestly, I prefer the raw, authentic feeling of someone playing the game rather than just another review, but that could be because I've indulged in the Let's Play era for a really long time now. To each their own.

The mistake was doing a traditional let's play with off the cuff commentary and very little video editing; It's extremely tricky to make entertaining. If Doug had approached this how he did Bebe's kids (heavier editing to accentuate the comedy and provide better pacing, scenes actually featuring the critic, and scripted jokes and commentary) he would have had something. Nostalgia Critic approaching video games was a promising concept that they never ended up exploring thanks to this video's reception (and that somewhat needless narrative that the Critic sticks to movies as his medium of choice for critique).
