I just beat this stage today without taking any hits except for the boss. Took me 3 days to get through. Harder than 1-8 combined. Absolutely mental.

9-4 is the single worst part of any video game ever. It is unspeakably hard. And then the game has the gall to make you fight the fucking doppelgänger right after it.

I've only been able to been this boss with Sypha, quickly jumping to the far left and cheesing it with the lightning spell.

That’s actually Dracula’s garden, he replaces it in the original with the dungeon which is moved up after the doppleganger lets him down.

If you ask me, this stage is tied with Alucard Stage 7 as the hardest level in the game, but the difference is that Alucard Stage 7 was hard for all the wrong reasons. This stage, however, is hard for all the right reasons. It must have taken me at least an hour to finish this stage the first time I beat this game!

Highly recommend either the Holy Water, or an even better choice for this boss would be the Cross with a Triple Shot if possible. Makes quick work of the poor guy!

How to beat this level without too much trouble: Use Grant. He gets axes in the fleamen room, and can almost outspeed the ones in back provided they don't go too fast. His hitbox is smaller, so the stairs room is easier, and he can use his wall climbing in the jerky screen room and to skip the rivers. And as for the boss... He just stands still throwing axes, just begging you to beat the shit out of him. Yeah, he's utterly broken. I know..

Oh yeah, I've beaten the game three times already, teamed up with each optional character once. But I haven't beaten it with Trevor only and this boss is the main thing stopping me. I could probably do it if I manage to keep the holy water, but if not it's going to take a lot of practice and probably luck too. XD

Man, I still have never been able to beat this boss using only Trevor and no holy water. I swear this boss almost makes Dracula look easy. XD This is the hardest level in the game for me anyway.

Your last area before the boss fight had floating skull heads? I was just playing it and lost my last life on that screen and it was Medusa heads for me. Anybody know why?

This is the second quest (once you beat the game, it starts over from stage 1 with harder enemies, known as the second quest). The skull heads replace Medusa heads in the game, and have a COMPLETELY unpredictable flight pattern. Insanely difficult.

@@BeholdMyStrength oh my goodness.... that sounds terrible lol. Let me know when you get hungry okay I'm on the second to last level with Sypha. First time ever playing and I'm going in blind oh, it is extremely difficult. Although I thought the same for bloodlines on Genesis but now that I've beaten it I can pick it up any old day and beat the game.

@@zero-theaveragegamer1159 Castlevania III is a lot the same way. It's a little trickier than Bloodlines in places, especially if you take the Alucard route, but the Sypha Route is pretty consistent, and once you beat it, it's a great sense of accomplishment! Keep going, you'll get it dude.

You know how some gaming youtubers, like ZetaPlays for example, have used save states while playing and beating these games? I wonder if the game developers of this game did the same, or if they had to do it in one go like what you've done here.

I just spent 3 hours trying to beat this level. And I still couldn't do it. I did a few days ago, but that was with save states. That boss is a bastard.

I've only been using Save State at the beginning of each level and once I get a game over I save over it with the game over screen so it would be just like playing the NES if I were to just leave it on. Stuck on this level though and starting to get tempted to break my own rules and cheat.

Jeremy Oxenham Yeah I replayed the game recently and beat all paths without save states for the first time. I can now say I’ve beaten Castlevania 1-4 without save states. Still can’t manage to beat Rondo of Blood, though.

@@sammyshehole I did NES Ninja Turtles with save states so I could get used to the game. I'm too old with too many things to do to spend that much time but then I was able to finally beat it without any save states in one sit down. Damn good feeling to realize a childhood dream.

9-4 is unfair, even by the standards of this game. It doesn't even seem possible to get through it without taking hits

I absolutely despise those birds. I've beat Castlevania 3 once recently with Trevor and Grant. But redoing the atage with Trevor and Sypha and going through 9-4 all the way is a nightmare. Especially with the double birds before you wrap around to the other side, it's fucking whore shit.

Update: using the ax subweapon helped properly taking care of the birds, and even cheesed the boss by having the triple shot and standing at the right wall while it couldn't do anything!
