After years of focusing on the best games for the NES, I decided to change gears and focus on lesser known cartridges that have, for one reason or another, generally escaped the public discussion and general nostalgia. This series highlights many of the relatively unknown, obscure, and unloved titles in the Nintendo Entertainment System's library. Some of these games are at best mediocre. Many are painfully bad, some of the worst NES games around. Most are hilarious for all the wrong reasons! Occasionally, OCCASIONALLY, a handful of them are actually good, borderline hidden gems.
While you won't find any of these on the NES Classic, some of these titles have managed to make their way onto the Nintendo Switch, so if you don't have an original Nintendo console or ROMs escape you ethically or technologically, there are several ways to play them.
Want more? Me too! Until then, lots of other articles where the pictures don't move and words have to be read can be found on my website: top100nesgames.com

Haha we had just started dating and I told her I couldn’t beat it. For some reason she really pushed me to finish it. It was pretty satisfying because she got to play some too and find out how incredibly hard it was, which was probably the only time I’ve impressed her with my video game skills ;)

One of the best on the NES. This game was not easy to find when it was first released. I remember calling every store in 50 mile radius and no one had it. I finally ordered it from Sears who told me it would arrive in 3-6 months and cost $50. It sucked, but it was the only option I had. Then on a random family trip we stopped at an old K-Mart to get some snacks and lo and behold, they had about 10 copies of CVIII. Even better, they were priced at $39.99 which was a steal at the time. We bought a copy and I forgot all about the Sears order as most the time after waiting several months for a game you would call them only to find it was still out of stock. But a few weeks later my other copy of CVIII arrived in the mail from Sears so I sold it to a friend.

my nes is 38 and one of its most glorious moments was beating this game. i don't recall thinking it was that difficult, but since i can't make it past the 3rd stage of the original, i think the non-belmont options helped me out a lot. i'm also sure i hunted down any and all magazines with tips and maps because i am NOT a skilled gamer, just an occasionally obsessed one.

@BigOleWords If you can beat Castlevania 3 you can beat Battletoads and Ironsword. Battletoads is the best game on the nes imo but Ironsword is....special. you can't play Ironsword like a regular video game. You have to learn all the eldritch glitches and exploits to beat it. I've got playthroughs of both games with commentary on my channel. It's kinda necessary for Ironsword to watch a playthrough but Battletoads you can figure out on your own.

I haven't played Castlevania III so I don't know if this technique works in that game, but it does in Dracula X / Castlevania IV, so I will share my incredibly effective yet simple platforming trick here: If you are on a narrow ledge and are about to get knocked off, instead of jumping or trying to dodge it, just duck and eat the hit. In those two games, you never get knocked back while ducking. It turns certain fights (like the final boss of Dracula X) into jokes.
@ErickC
@ErickC 4 күн бұрын
The whole premature death weapon thing is the exact reason why the best strategy in the original Star Fox is to avoid all the midlevel rings. The powerups are almost always in the beginning of each stage and you don't want to be fighting the boss with a shitty single laser.
@maltheopia
@maltheopia 4 күн бұрын
The NA release of Ninja Gaiden III is like that, too. The levels are significantly easier if you can keep power-ups from earlier in the level, especially the gauntlet in the final level. Unfortunately, Ninja Gaiden III also has mandatory checkpoints, so c'est la vie.

I never thought about it that way but castlevania does seem to feature that 'don't die or you're screwed' mechanic. it also made me think of the Gradius series! CV3 is definitely in my top five of castlevania games! Fond memories of being beaten down by the NES version, but recently there was the castlevania collection, and thanks to the savestates and other QOL features, I did finally finish the Japanese version! and yeah the extra hardware definitely gives it the edge in the soundtrack department. the US version is still good, though.

This is the first game in the series I ever owned, and still my second favorite in the series. In my younger years, I could get to stage 6 (both Sypha’s and Alucard’s path, with the bone dragon) without the HELP ME bonus, but nowadays I don’t need it. Five years ago, I completed no continue playthrough with each partner and Trevor solo, which felt amazing. I doubt a deathless playthrough is in my future, but I did run Vs. Castlevania deathless once, so who knows? Maybe I’ll give it a go with this game someday.

dhsu made some pretty rad piano versions of the songs ages ago (check out dhsu clockwork vampire for the first clockwork tower), also the last boss 2nd stage spitting thing, you can just crouch to avoid any damage, also the japanese version grant has knife as a default weapon, so if you need a ranged one you grant is worthwhile a pick and not letting him go, always good to have a knife subweapon as a primary weapon.

Two controversial takes: 1. I actually prefer the NA soundtrack. The Japanese one sounds too busy. More (channels) doesn't mean better. 2. I dislike the branching paths. Having to replay some levels 2X or even 3X to get some new ones is not my thing even back in 1990.

CV3 is my favorite CV after SOTN. I love the replay value, multiple pathways and playable characters, the challenging but fair gameplay, the spooky, gothic horror atmosphere and the catchy, moody music. There's a lot of variety and depth in the level design, graphics and music. I was actually a bit disappointed in SC4 when it came out because altho it was an excellent game, one of the better ones in the series with some of the best controls in a 16 bit game, it didn't have the replay value of CV3. I always wished they had've kept the multiple pathways and playable characters in subsequent CVs. When I was a kid I'd usually get Grant then ditch him later for Alucard in order to skip through the more challenging sections of levels whenever possible, but as I got older I came to appreciate Syfa, especially the power and agility of her ball lightning attack, how it made boss fights so much easier, and how you could defeat enemies from afar before they had a chance to attack.

Did you say almost 30 years to complete this? 😮 This sounds hard as f00k, It's funny because I have most of the castlevania Games but never really played any of them, I have a feeling when I do I won't be starting with this one 😂 Fantastic video mate

I beat CV3 when I was like 9. It was tough, but doable. I always thought CV1 was a lot tougher, because of Death and especially Dracula. I wasn't able to beat him until much later in life, and even than I think I had to use save state.

I didn't get hold of this cart until 2004. And I still remember the confusion of everyone in the house, when that final axe smacked Dracula between the eyes and I shouted, "VICTORY!" BTW, what was the other Konami game with a chick reveal that you showed?

I want a new Castlevania already...the demand for one is obvious. Just make it 3D and give us advanced whip mechanics. And sprinkle some Dark Souls influence in there.

I never want to play this game without savestates and/or a rewind key as with the Anniversary Collection. I used to beat my head against that wall as a kid on NES so often and utterly refuse to torture myself like that again. Hell, I blame CVIII for my lack of patience with bullshit mechanics today.

While I never had this game, and didn't get a chance to play it until the "any way you can" era, it'll always stick out to me as both being an episode of Captain N (the lousy season with the ugly animation on the 10 minute runtime) and the basis of the Netflix series, as far as my understanding. But considering how the Captain N episode seems like the plot was described to the writer in a minute, no wonder the "wizard" was misgendered, and wound up being a crusty old man in the Captain N series. Especially, as per my understanding, that's supposed to be Simon's mommy.

Is there any other confirmation on the gender besides long hair? Men can have long hair too.
@beavinator

Within the game itself, no there is not (although at the time and in Japan, they would not have even dreamed of implying homosexuality in a video game, so Trevor putting his arm around her was pretty much confirmation). In supplemental materials and future games and shows however she is always portrayed as female. I believe the idea to "intentionally" obfuscate her gender in this game actually stemmed from limitations of space on the cartridge, such that they could not have separate text messages for each individual companion, so it says "Take him with you?" for all three.

I just realized I was incorrect, the text in Sypha's ending does state "Syfa, the Vampire Killer has had a hard life, but since she met Trevor she is beginning to feel more comfortable with herself." So no, it wasn't just the hair. Heck, most of the dudes in Castlevania games have long hair anyway, so you're right, that alone would not really have been decisive 😄
