So, what can I say about today's episode in relation to the novel? Pang Tong's signing up with Liu Bei happens under different circumstances. When Zhou Yu (first seen Episode 23) dies, Zhuge Liang goes to the Southland to offer homage. Pang Tong confronts him afterwards, laughing as he says, "You drove Master Zhou to his death, and yet have the nerve to come and pay your victim homage -- as if to mock the Southland for having no one of stature!" They catch up for a while, the Zhuge Liang tells him if he can't find work with Sun Quan, to come serve Liu Bei instead. Lu Su (first seen Episode 20) is selected as Zhou Yu's successor, but he demurs, recommending Pang Tong for the job instead. Sun Quan is initially delighted, but when he meets him in person, is put off his strange appearance ("his bushy brows and tilted nose, his dark complexion and short beard") and apparent disdain for Zhou Yu. Sun Quan ultimately gives Pang Tong the ol' "don't call us, we'll call you," so Lu Su gives him a (frankly redundant) letter of recommendation to take to Liu Bei. Liu Bei is also put off by Pang Tong's appearance and gives him a job as a county prefect, a post for which he's clearly overqualified. Pang Tong neglects his duties and spends most of the next few months in a drunken stupor until Liu Bei finds out and dispatches Zhang Fei and Sun Qian (who's still not in this game) to find out what's going on. They quickly realize Pang Tong was badly underutilized in his current position and informed Liu Bei, who promoted him to an appropriate position alongside Zhuge Liang. 2:22 Zhang Song's role is a bit different. He's a civil official under Liu Zhang, lord of the western Riverlands, who has learned his enemy Zhang Lu (mentioned under Episode 45) is planning to take over the region. Zhang Song proposes asking for help, not from Liu Bei, but from Cao Cao, hoping to pit him against Zhang Lu. This plan doesn't work out, because Zhang Lu is really, really bad at diplomacy, and can't stop insulting Cao Cao and the other northerners. On his way back, he meets Liu Bei's forces and decides to convince him to take over the Riverlands from Liu Zhang. 2:37 Liu Zhang isn't depicted as evil, just weak. Zhang Song describes him to Liu Bei as being "endowed with so ignorant and irresolute a nature that he has kept worthy and competent men from office. Now with the threat from Zhang Lu in the north, confidence is shaken, and people's thoughts turn to acquiring an enlightened lord." This leads to some almost comedic events, as Liu Bei really doesn't want to usurp his kinsman, but everyone working for him, as well as some working for Liu Zhang, keep trying to make it happen. 3:18 Hanzhong is controlled by Zhang Lu, mentioned above. After returning to the Riverlands, Zhang Song suggests to Liu Zhang they bring in Liu Bei to repel Zhang Lu and Cao Cao. 3:35 Zhang Song carries a map of Shu with him on his journey and presents to Liu Bei during their discussion. No caves involved. 3:56 Zhang Song tells Liu Bei he has two close and trusted friends, Meng Da and Fa Zheng; he enlists them both into his scheme to turn over the Riverlands to Liu Bei. 9:09 We saw Yang Bai last episode. We discussed him on the Discord; I still don't know who this guy is. Yan Pu is only mentioned a handful of times. He works for Zhang Lu and is the one to suggest taking over the Riverlands. 12:01 Wang Lei is an aide to Liu Zhang. He's one of several who publicly protests Zhang Song's plan to bring in Liu Bei, realizing it will result in Liu Zhang being supplanted. Liu Zhang dismisses him, and shortly after learns he...yeah, I'm going to have to quote the text here, because as I've said before, everyone in second-century China is a huge drama queen. _Wang Lei had strung himself upside down above the city portals, a written protest in one hand, a sword in the other, and was threatening to cut the rope and dash himself to death if his warnings were not heeded. Liu Zhang called for the protest note, which said in essence:_ _Your aide Wang Lei weeps blood, appealing in all sincerity. "Effective medicine is bitter to the mouth but remedies disease. Loyal words offend the ear but benefit one's conduct." In ancient times King Huai of Chu ignored the advice of Qu Yuan and covenanted at Wuguan, falling prey to Qin. Now Your Lordship lightly leaves his home district to welcome Liu Bei at Fucheng. Will you return the way you came? If only you would put Zhang Song publicly to death and break off with Liu Bei, the entire population of Shu as well as your own house would benefit._ _Angered by what he had read, Liu Zhang said, "I go to meet a humane and benevolent man, a kindred spirit of noble intent. How often do you mean to affront us this way?" Wang Lei uttered a single cry, severed the rope, and crashed to his death._

I laughed heartily when you were selling items and "liu bei" was there. I have a love for all things for this exact time period. My favorite person is Guan Yu. Imagine the strength needed to wield a 100 pound glaive like nothing in battle. My life goal is to visit this region and see the statue of Guan Yu.

If I'm not mistaken, *FuSha* and *LiFan* are the stronger versions of *YiXin* and *LiJian* respectively. The former two cost more TP, they are harder to land (for me, anyway), and if one of those *does* land on an opposing enemy, its effect will last *F O R E V E R* , until the cursed one goes down, or an ally successfully casts the *JieCe* tactic, which causes any glued tactic (including the *JiMian* tactic that we saw there) to dissipate. Feel free to correct me, if there's something I missed. Also, I love how *Zhang Song* has the same sprite as *Pang Tong* but with the red and white colors, which is also shared by *a certain scoundrel* but we get to him *W A Y* later down the road of benevolence, so enjoy his absence for now.
