Let's Play Diablo 2 - Paladin Nightmare Difficulty Guided Playthrough

Hello everyone!
This is part 2 of the Diablo 2 Guided Playthrough for the Paladin! Chat voted on my twitter ( / mrllamasc ) and chose this as the next playthrough.
We will be playing a zealot that transforms into a hammerdin. Normal, Nightmare, and Hell are all planned, however if things go well we might consider going after Ubers as well :D

I havn't played in like 12 years. I installed the game and start following the video in an online game. Some guy joined and asked whats up. I told him I havn't played in a while and I was following this guide. He said brb and came back and started throwing all kinds of gear at me. Cool community.

The year was 1998/99 and I was buying my first computer. There was a display system they were selling and they had D2 installed. I loved the original so was keen to see what D2 was like. After getting home and launching the game I was presented with the 5 original characters standing around a campfire. I clicked on the barb and he stepped forward and yelled. I yelled back and was instantly in love with the game. I ended up starting a necro online and thought I would just level in private games and learn the game, but really started enjoying myself when I joined public games and teamed up with other folk around the world.

I have this reoccurring dream where I go fly fishing with my two little sisters. While wading out into the middle of the river, my foot and ankle become lodged between two rocks. I am stuck; and when I look back toward the shore for help, my sisters have transformed into the pigtail-murdered twins from The Shining. As I fruitlessly attempt to recover my mobility, my sisters continuously chant, “Will you come play with us?” I awake at this point, drenched in sweat, still crying out “No!” Do you ever have similar dreams where you are stuck in a stream, bombarded with already answered questions, repeatedly?

That conversation in regards to thinking about combat is a neat perspective which I do appreciate where you have to consider immune enemies. One the opposite end, I'm also a fan of Torchlight II in the way skills are handled allowing either a broad variety of skills or speccing into a single tree since nothing is outright immune. I think it does make up for that with the proper difficulty selection, since any build can work in Casual and Normal, especially skills that compliment each other, while Veteran and Elite is more like this game where you need to study effective equipment and skill builds or you're just going to get flattened not even halfway through Act I. There are some Hammerdin-like skills that you always spec out like the Engineer's Healing Bot (health/mana regen *and* an armor bonus) and the Embermage's Prismatic Bolt (five homing bolts that are spectral hits). tl;dr, I've grown to enjoy Torchlight II's skill system where you don't need to think too hard on the easier difficulties as long as you can use them in ways that compliment each other like following up a Chain Snare (an AoE grappling) with Ravage (an AoE slash)

I was doing NM ancients on a HC Sorc for a friend back in the day. We were both messing around and meleeing the last guy down. I was lvl 80ish with nice gear and still got one shot by the fire enchant.... I learned the hard way about fire enchant

Was working through Arcane Sanctuary and got an awesome drop of a 4 socket Herald shield with +11 resis all! 4 perfect diamonds later and now I'm rocking that with my Spirit Sword and pretty much MF gear everywhere else!

I was rocking along in nightmare until I hit the maggot cave in Act 2. My hammers just constantly banged up against the wall. I was guzzling mana. Positioning was like trying to move around in a casket. Mobs could be kited to a limited extent. They wouldn't go around corners. Sometimes I found mobs in front and mobs behind and couldn't hit either regardless of positioning. This cave ranks among the highest unfun experiences in rpgs. I finally hired a pikeman and we moved through the cave with relative ease since the mobs are actually easy kills....if you can hit them! Sometimes the pikeman wouldn't go around me to attack and that was frustrating. I'm sure better players figured this cave out and breezed through, but I'm just a normal player trying to run in a nightmare game. I've never finished hell and that was before the very helpful videos like Llama we have today. I hope to have a better result with all of the help from this video(s). Thanks

Especially if you are trying to farm a place, or even play /p8 for more drops, how do you avoid the over leveling penalty? Everytime I try to farm countess or Andy for decent gear before moving forward, I start getting overleveled

so for hammerdin mods/stats that are embedded in the gear. you want to look for mods like +skills, +FCR, +FHR, +RES, when farming for gear right? am i missing something? Faster block also im assuming and max defense 75%?

I played D2HC for 10 years and had 2 accounts full of level 98-99 HC toons when I stopped playing. My Enigma WW Barb SpareChange was a HC Dueling legend US East HC ladder with stash filled with ears. Quit playing when my level 99 Javazon got nuked by lag spiked hell souls running bail runs for friends... lag spiked... frantic jamming alt+F4...loaded back in to a cloaked tune... that was the last time I was willing to let hell souls and lag nuke months of grinding... then I stumbled across your videos the other night and immediately downloaded the game lol.

Getting ready for "remastered"...trying to figure out the class to play. Back in the day I did zealer, windy druid and ww barb (I have a hard time with fragile toons). I always hated the lack of aoe. I am thinking a hamerdin. I tried a zon and a bliz mage this week in order to "train" for the release, and they have such a hard time farming in hell, limited to such specific areas due to immunities.

I‘m a Diablo 2 player since day one but I haven’t played in like 12 years. I always had a MF sorc to equip my other chars. I am tempted to play the game again but don’t feel like having the time to play several characters. Is the paladin viable as only character? I mean magic find wise. As hammerdin certainly, since it was one of my mains in one season but I had the most fun with my Zealot that I created for ubers.

Can you do another one like this but in hardcore? This is what I've been working on for months. On my 7th try and it's way different only having 1 life. I am confused about monster res, always thought it can go down to -255. Different sources of info give different result. Also i think it is 1/5 effectiveness of anything that is trying to lower resistances with above 100 value, how come? UPD: now passed part with 1/5 divider explanation

An Ort + Sol Lore Helm would fix lightning resistance at the start here. Not too hard to get the helmet in act 2 normal and get the runes from the Countess in nightmare.

FOHdin, hammerdin, smiter, zealot, auradin, chargelot those are 6 decent ones you could play around with! I've tried all of those and enjoyed them in different ways

Ya you can put 1 socket into them. Depends what you want! More MF? Runes, jewels, gems, the world is your oyster!

I mean i was grinding allready as a kid this game but i came from diablo 1 and didnt get the skill trees at that time. In diablo 1 you had TOMES. So it was more obvious. and after few hours i stopped playing it. Didnt wanna play a game where you have to run away from a group of 4 mobs. Few years ago i came somehow to the Diablo 1 mode called Belzebub... I dont know if you heard about it. Was crazy difficult, i feel even more difficult on Hell than this, so i never made it through Hell there. I had to install the Pluggy mode cause i just couldnt bare it to throw away all the good stuff that i found with amazon, and when i see you throwing away all the Porn-items for other classes makes my stomach crawl :D And paladin is definately my next character to go and play it. Sry for my bad grammar, im from Germany. And thx for your VIDS!!!! PS: Will have to donate soon if i would be on when your streaming as my gratitude.

I'm sitting here with my Ancient's Pledge wondering where I went wrong to miss out on +40 all res lol. I have a question about max block. How should I go about getting it? I have 137 dex and 1 point in holy shield and I don't quite get there. I feel as if I should put more points in it instead of dex, is that a better idea? (Right now working on Vigor/Blessed Aim points)

You should get a better shield. Diff shield bases have diff block rates, 137 with holy shield should be enough for a lot of paladin shields

You should try 'Throne of Darkness' (2001) game. It's ARPG with Japanese mythology and you play 7 heroes (4 are active at most, 3 are resting).

I think a more concise way to explain breaking immunities would be: Immunities are 100% resistance or more. If the spell lowers their resistance below 100% you can deal damage. the higher over 100 the harder it is to break e.g. it would take -50 resist to take a 125 resist monster below 100 (not sure on that math but thats the idea)

A quick written guide would be sick, kind of like what you'd find for PoE builds on their forums. What to farm for at what level, what runes you need, what points to assign where, etc.

I like the comment about infinite progression. If there is infinite progression that just means that progression is useless. There is nothing to progress towards and any progress you make will be infinitely irrelevant if aiming for the ultimate build.
