Right but those paintings contained nudity because back then a pure human body was beauty. Many cultures had large breasted women with wide thighs to signify their fertility and motherhood. The Greeks took it a step further by making "perfect humans" in their art. The art of that age fulfilled it's purpose. Thanks for bringing that up though :)

As I started to progressively watch more of this video, and finally reaching the Florence Griffon story part, I then began to realize that I'm ashamed of my own country, or at least some of the people in it. I mean it was a sacred church that for the longest while had rules established to their beliefs. When you visit a foreign country, the first thing you really should do before going, is researching a little bit of its history. By this way you gain some knowledge to better understand and respect their wonderful culture. It's all about respect, really. :)
@TheSpoonyCroy10 жыл бұрын
Well they were technically both wrong and right at the same time*. Why should people fear their skins, you just reinforce double standards. Why is it wrong when women are topless but not for men but Griffon was a tad immature about this but if you get pissed the rage just blinds you and clouds decisions. Also everyone hates their country :P since people want what they can't have

And the guards at the church were disrespecting Griffons culture by telling her she can't wear certain clothing inside the church. It would be like if someone stopped a person from the Middle East because they wanted to enter somewhere but weren't allowed to wear clothes traditional in their country. People seem to be okay telling Americans how we should respect everyone else, but nobody ever respects our way of life.

As much as I love so many Americans, this is one of the reasons why tourists from the US get a bad wrap. If you go to someone else's country then you respect their customs, you don't have to like them. If I went to DC and took a shit on the American flag in front of the White House some people might be upset (I realise that might be a little disproportionate but I'm using it for emphasis ;)).

I feel like what Griffin did was a bit rude. Sure, I think that you should be able to go somewhere and not worry about wearing shortish shorts. However, when visiting another country, respecting and following their customs is really the best way to go. The man was doing his job. Some people already automatically judge tourists, but when you go and blatantly bitch about their customs, you're gonna be disliked. Again, it's not like Griffin came in in a bikini, and reaction was funny and makes some sense. But being in another country with different customs changes the situation.

Who cares if she did come in a bikini? The point isn't their customs, the point is they need to be able to deal with tourists if they want to run a tourist spot.

The Zigzagman You haven't been there, but these churches have signs clearly indicating the rules for visiting. Even if you're a tourist, you still have a brain and you should use it.
@TheZigzagman9 жыл бұрын
Renzsu Bitch, I've been to churches and cathedrals on every continent they exist, including Italian ones. Don't presume to tell me what I do or don't know. They don't have rules posted outside like it's a Chuck E. Cheese. If they do, and it's a rarity that they do, they say one thing: "Please be quiet and respect other's right to worship." There's no dress code. The guy that called her out for wearing shorts was being sexist and attempting to bully a foreigner because the more pompous Europeans get off on that shit.

This has always been my rule of thumb: My house, my rules - your house, your rules. Same thing applies to countries, no matter how weird your customs may seem to me, I will do my best to respect them, and hope that, in return you respect my country's odd laws. Griffin, imo, threw an adult tantrum. She seems like a cool lady, but I guess some times she can't check her temper. I know everyone has their faults, but I'm a bit befuddled by the fact that Geoff is lauding her behavior as admirable.

To the people giving Griffin hate for this, I get it. I still think it was awesome, a little over the top yeah, but I still think its cool when people point out when things that aren't a big deal get treated as such. Doesn't matter the country they're in or are from. In defense of the Italian man, yes it was his job and yes it is a church where people more traditionally, not religiously per se, wear more modest garb. However, it was open to the public to admire the architecture/art. They have to assume that whatever the tourist is wearing is what they brought, and that, even in a house of God, they can't make a miraculous, snap of the finger, wardrobe change. When you set up a tourist attraction or convert something into one, whatever is okay on the street should be okay in the building. I also think that Griffin would have taken it better if that Italian man didn't act like, "Whoa, whoa, whoa! Lady, what the fuck are you wearing? Yeah, not happening." Also, one thing I'd like to add that most discussions I've read seemed to have ignored: Millie's comment "What about the naked dude paintings?" That was fucking on point.

A nice chilled let's play. And yea, those security guards in Florence, kind of douches. I went there about 6 years ago with my class in high school, I was wearing a long black trench-coat with some badges and some Dr. Martens boots with pyramid studs on, and this old, very short, guard says, in just understandable English "You can't come in like that, it's a disgrace to God." I am not the type to get aggressive or anything, but our teacher (who happened to be teaching in history and religion, and is a really nice guy) simply said: "Well, God did not make clothes for Adam and Eve, so if we are not to disgrace him, we should probably get naked..." And the best thing was that guard didn't think he was being serious, so the guard's facial expression got completely perplexed when my teacher started unbuttoning his shirt. It was priceless.

Mrs. Ramsey was in fault because she argued with the wrong person about a RULE. Churches are controlled by the Vatican State and the security guard it's not the right person to talk about the fool rule of dress code (you should take an appointment with the Pope)...why the dress code exist and has to respected mainly Italy (and not France, Spain etc...)? Because here in Italy religion was a big deal until the '80s, only in the last 20 years italians stopped to go to church every Sunday and be "catholic" in general...just think that for about 500/600 years the Vatican State (it is called State of Church in the history books) was huge (about 1/3 of the national territory)......About the chicken thing Mr. Ramsey didn't read very well menu because even in the cheaper restaurant there's always three options for the meat section: pork chop, beef steak and chicken breast so....... Beside, am I the only one that when plan to go in a foreign country spend a couple of days in front of the laptop and search for the country's costumes, traditions, rules, what to do and don't, cuisine etc?.......

To answer Jacks question "I wonder why everyone hates Americans so much" Geoffs story pretty much sums it up, instead of being quiet and accepting other peoples way's of life you go and get all uppety because it's not the same as yours. I'm not saying all Americans are like this at all, but the ones that are, are the loudest, most obnoxious and are the stereotype. Seriously, it's a bullshit thing that they have naked people in the paintings but won't let you in a church with short shorts on, but seriously, is it really that big a fucking deal to be asked to cover up? Get the fuck over it. Some people just need to learn to be more passive. There was no need in this situation to make a scene like that. That, is why people hate Americans. (Australian, I know a thing or two about not getting annoyed by Bullshit)
@GingerNingerGames10 жыл бұрын
Just sayin' there'd be a lot less shit in the fan if everyone respected everyone elses customs, in Australia we're having issues where immigrants are complaining that ANZAC day and Australia day Offend them, and because of this they want them changed or stopped altogether. See, if they didn't even comment, if they just kept their noses out of other peoples business then the Australian populous that was born here wouldn't have a problem with them being here, but the fact that they flock here and then try to change our customs. Not on at all. Griffon did the same thing in Italy in a church. Just live and let live for fuck's sake.

Kinda' happening in Holland too... In Holland, there's a day called "Sinterklaas". It's basically our Christmas, only on the 5th of December. This "Sinterklaas" has black helpers. Now, there are loads of people finding this racist and are trying to ruin this custom for us. These helpers are all black because "Sinterklaas" is actually St. Nicholas, a Turkish saint who gave the blacks work, not as a slave, no, as a paid laborer. Now a lot of you may find this sound extremly racist, but I think that if you go to another country you need to respect their customs, most of us respect yours aswell, but if you don't respect ours, just get the hell out of the country and never ever go back. That's just my point of view, don't call me a racist. I'm not, believe me.

My problem with the griffin situation is that she made a huge deal (as well as a bad name for americans) because she didnt want to spend a buck or 2. Consider this, if you went to a friends house and they told you to take off your shoes because they just got a new carpet, would you start an argument about it, or take off your shoes? and sure your feet are a little colder, but you and your friend are both happy.

I'm sorry but, if the church was selling ponchos... that is definitely fishy at least, and a scam at most. If they really cared about showing legs and shoulders (which a public place for tourists should be well aware of, especially during summer) and that buying a poncho would solve it, a true culturally religious thing to do was to offer the poncho for free, kinda as a mandatory uniform for the church! Not sell it, selling ponchos for shorts or sleeveless clothes in summer in itself is bullshit enough. Not saying Griffon wasn't overreacting, but some people are made like that, they stand their ground and speak their minds. But, in this case scenario, that church poncho system is too whacky to be in the right.
@baynality249610 жыл бұрын
It's not a scam that you need to wear clothes covering knees and shoulders, it's been that way for centuries. Agreed, you shouldn't have to pay for the poncho, but it's far from a scam. If anything, it's a deterrent. "Don't show up in what we consider indecent dress, and you won't have to pay for a poncho" It's the same deal in a lot of other religious sites, like the temples in Thailand, women need to have fully covered legs and usually have to buy 'fishermen pants' (don't know the real name, it's what we were told to call them) at the door as a result. I'd really enjoy it if I could buy shirts and trousers at the door of restaurants if I showed up dressed inappropriately, it would make life pretty easy.

@baynality249610 жыл бұрын
AutisticWayOfLife It's got nothing to do with the times. What could this possibly have to do with the times? I would understand and agree if it was witch burnings, or something from the past that has been shown to be completely ridiculous, but it isn't. It's a simple, "we believe exposed knees and shoulders is indecent dress, and ask that you cover up" What is so out of the times about that? Damn those nice restaurants for making me wear a shirt and trousers everyone wears skinny jeans, far too loose singlets and vans now, get with the times. Damn those cafes for asking I wear a shirt and shoes to their premises because they think I'm indecently dressed otherwise, get with the times. Different standards of decency are everywhere, and the Italian Catholic Church happens to have their own.
@Neremworld10 жыл бұрын
Baynality The problem was they had absolutely no problem with the guys showing legs or shoulders, or Griffon showing her legs after she bought the poncho. She even got pictures of her supposedly being indecent right next to the security guards and they didn't care as long as she paid her 'sin tax'.

It seems a bit rude that people would laugh first when someone falls or hurts themselves unintentionally, and then not care to help them out. if they require the help needed to continue with their days. As humans, we should be helping each other out to keep everyone alive and healthy so this word can keep going. Yes there is individualism competition, but when it comes to being a human being, helping each other out is something we all should learn to accomplish. Sorry Geoff, and the rest of achievement hunter that laughed, but that was quite immature of you guys to sit there and laugh, and show no respect to someone else.

On the Griffon incident… I think the main reason was not the customs, but the way the customs were imposed on her… ignorance is not a crime… it's something that can be solved by simply… I'm sorry, we have the tradition of such and such. We mean you no offense, but it is frowned upon. Also, the situation seems fishy… the church essentially is charging her for entrance into a public place by enforcing this no shoulder, no leg policy so strictly, and making the only convenient alternative to pay for a poncho thingy… or whatever it was… if it were a place of worship, it should be offered as a free rental, and then an offer to purchase it, at the end for as a donation to the church… as far as I can tell, that's not a church… that's a business...
