The happiest gaming days of my life were our families playing Riven in our pajamas for 3 days straight. We couldn't stop. We ordered pizzas, took turns and basically gamed like our lives depended on it. I bought Myst IV years ago, and haven't cracked the box yet, I can tell you why but there's a myst-ery I think endures better in my imagination with an untold ending I never want to end.

I do love the new cursor behavior with tapping surfaces and a changed gesture to show where you can walk. Myst III would've been a much more solid game if it had that mechanic, as I feel that was probably the main flaw it had.

The journals of the brothers in Myst IV never mention being trapped in the void, or talking to the stranger. Furthermore, it takes them quite a while to realize they're trapped (they spend a lot of time searching for the Myst book) and they don't initially realize that the other brother is also trapped (while in Myst they seem to know that since they warn against freeing the other).

I'm already gob-smacked that this place is in New Mexico, not another world! I could have been quite near there and never knew. This is great, I can watch the day's TLJ instalment as I'm waiting for the HD version of Myst IV to load. What a treat to come home to this after a hard day's work. Thanks, Sven

@tekhiun Rand Miller only portrayed Achenar in Myst. In Myst IV both the roles of the brothers were given to different actors, neither of whom were actually related to each other (unlike the case with Robyn and Rand in Myst, sadly). I still wish Robyn had come back to the Sirrus role for this game but he'd long since parted ways with Cyan at that point.

It would certainly make the journals more cohesive if being pushed out of the void cleared your memory of the time inside. The only problem would be about how both brothers knew that the other was trapped in Myst, but didn't after getting into Spire and Haven, as well as the fact that the Stranger would've forgotten that brief 3-second imprisonment in Riven, meaning that he wouldn't have understood how Gehn suddenly got inside the book.

I agree with many of your points about Revelation. I'd probably rank Exile lower though. While it had some good puzzles, the Ages of J'nanin just didn't have any sense of history to them, which is what I love most in Myst. In Revelation you at least get to find out what the brothers have been up to by observing the prison Ages, in Exile the Ages are just there to provide you with puzzles, all the story is told through Saavedro's journal and occasional video message.

Now I believe it's possible to recreate this game in UnrealEngine 4 and actually walk around in the environment. Would be awesome if someone would do that..

It's not noticeable unless you are really looking closely but Myst IV's cutscenes were filmed in Montreal (this is the only Myst game made in Canada) so Ubisoft had all the scenes filmed in English and French (except for possibly Rand but that's my guess). So at certain times they use the French footage so the lip movements don't really match the English dialogue. Since I've read that Rand Miller did go to Montreal I'm guessing he did film his scenes there too but maybe not with the rest of the cast since Atrus only interacts with the player.

If you haven't noticed yet, the actor that plays Atrus through out the myst series is the same one that plays achenar =) and he is also one of the creators of myst.

It's really odd that the Cyan logo was added to this game when Exile went without it (making Exile the only Myst game that doesn't begin with the Cyan logo). You can kind of justify the inclusion because of Rand Miller's involvement but it was almost like Ubisoft put it in to appease the fans...

I can't remember if you touch on this in a later video (since it's been a while since I last watched this LP), but I forgot just how much some of the anachronistic dialogue in this game bothers me (Yeesha referring to things as 'cool,' Achenar describing Sirrus as 'nuts'). I do enjoy this game, and I know there are other things to nitpick about it, but it's just something that bugs me.

I love Myst IV. Of all the games in the series, I think it's the most beautiful. I would love to visit Haven. But I hate dealing with that monkey-creature call at the end of the age, and pretty much all of Serenia. I'm pleased to see you took the time to run us through without having to deal with that, and I'm even more pleased to hear how knowledgeable you are on the series! Any chance to learn more about Myst is fine by me!

i havnt played myst, riven or exile in years...havnt been able to find a way to play them on my newest computer..and im not sure if myst 4/5 would work on my computer so i havnt gotten them yet..but im glad i found your lets plays so i can watch these games again and see the ones i havnt played..you seem like a smart dood and yours are the only LP's ive been able to listen to

The contradictions disappear if you'll thake Uru and Myst V out of picture. One fact is true - after burning a prison book a person trapped inside links to whatever Age the book was originally linking to. After all, the PB makes you trapped in between ages.

Is there any record (eg a novel?) that covers the 12-13 years between Myst III: Exile and this game? The stranger has clearly been visiting Atrus periodically during this time. He seems to know Yeesha quite well (and Catherine and Atrus entrust the stranger with their daughter's safety; allowing her to go alone to pick him up) and she was practically a newborn in the previous game so she wouldn't remember him otherwise.

The prison books still connect to ages, my personal theory is that when the books were destroyed that everything, including the brothers, we're sent into the Ages the prisons connected to, that had been trapped in the link between. Of course, that those ages were also prisons was just Atrus thinking ahead.

I believe that prison books somehow place a person "in limbo" or "in between" ages. But I can't really be bothered to find a citation for that.

Atrus' house is truly amazing, with its many buildings suspended over the lake, and its own dam with a power supply, and not to mention the monorail. Makes you wonder how he's hiding it all from the eyes of humans, who would probably love to come sample his advanced technology. It's not like his house is in some uninhabited backwater, it's in the middle of the 1820's New Mexico, and people live there, and a Steampunk monorail wasn't exactly a common sight anywhere at that time.

@Microsoftultimatefan No, Cyan supported them (Rand Miller still plays Atrus after all). The reason Ubisoft made this game is because Cyan was busy making Uru at the time.

You could make a good critic one day... I have to agree that this levels up to Riven, which many have played, but the improved visuals including the pre rendered screens that no longer stood still made it more imerssive. I miss this artwork style so much.

What was late seventeenth/early eighteenth century Spanish* for "cool"? 7:02 -- I asked someone from the production team about that bird, and the reason I couldn't find it in any bird guides was that it's from one of Atrus' Ages--which means that with Katran's decease and Atrus' implied Alzheimer's in End of Ages, nobody knows it's invasive. *Spanish as Ti'ana spoke it, and thus how Atrus and kids spoke it.

Myst IV may have its flaws, but it sure is the most beautiful and technologically impressive. It is definitely my personal favorite, closely followed by Riven and then the original Myst.

@Microsoftultimatefan Yes, Cyan is a colour, which is why the icon included a small cyan planet, as it is actually called Cyanworlds, or Cyan Worlds, not quite sure which one. ANd as Dilandau pointed out, it was Ubisoft which made this. But enough of that info, I actually wanted to ask you in this comment, what your point is with pointing out that Cyan is a colour?

But Atrus does mention the buring of the books. And the name of the game is "Revelation". So isn't that the revelation? That burning a book doesn't make the prisoner stuck? That way the only contradition I found is one of the bad endings of Riven. Btw, do the journals actually say something like "My sons used the books and they were teleported to the ages instantly? I'm not sure...

@ilikemario8 The last time Gehn saw Atrus was when Atrus trapped him on Riven, before Sirrus and Achenar were born. The only way he could know about them is if Catherine told him about them after he captured her, which I doubt she would do.

It's actually kind of weird how they recast Achenar AND the original actor is still in the game. I think the most likely reason is Rand Miller isn't a trained actor and this game needed trained actors for the brothers since they have a lot of screentime.

The contradictions has nothing to do with Uru and Myst V. It comes purely from Atrus's and the brothers' journals in this game, which never mention the concept of trap books. And also from the fact that Cyan outright told us that trap books didn't exist long before this game was even in the planning stages.

The cutscenes were actually filmed in both French and English since they filmed in Montreal. It's why I've read that some scenes have bad lip syncing because they used the French footage instead.

According to another commenter, they would have been speaking Spanish, as that was Anna's native tongue, and therefore the human language her descendants learned. Thus "translation convention" applies.

@ilikemario8 It depends on how you play through Myst 3. You can imprison him or let him free. Sirrus and Achenar had destroyed Saavedro's world and he believes his family were killed. He seeks revenge, not knowing that Atrus has already punished Sirrus and Acehnar. In Myst 3, you can choose to imprison him or let Saavedro return to his people and family.

Can someone please help me ? I need to know if a reliable place to doenload Myst 4 Revelation. GoG (Goold Old Game) doesn't have it and every download site I've found looks totally sketchy at best and almost always say it's "free" which I don't trust. @ToricoUK indeed because it's possible to make beatiful graphics running smooth on every computer, but that was 2004, wouldnt it be GORGEOUS to have myst IV rendered in realtime 3D exactly like it is right now (so unlike realmyst which looks different). making it realtime would allow you to choose your resolution (imagine a 1080p imac or the 27"!!!) and you could float between the camera positions. should be possible with a descent 2010 machine...
