You can toggle the fmv scenes in options. I think they went cgi sheerly for vr. There is a particularly scene I think wouldnt work without cgi models in vr. But yes if your playing on standard PC your best bet is to toggle the fmvs

When the footage was recorded that wasn’t an option, but now it is! I did a video on this update and how it changed my review ever so slightly. Good review! I had the same glitching on the trees, and submitted a ticket to Cyan. They wrote back and simply asked to confirm I had the newest Nvidia drivers (which I didn't). One update later and all is well.

Maybe not the right place to ask, but i'll try anyway. I love puzzle games such as Portal and The Talos Principle (i'm currently playing the 2nd game) and I can say that the Talos Principle 1 is the most difficult that I can bare and have fun. How is Myst difficulty in comparison ?

I think Myst is difficult, but the game will give you most of the answers if you look for them. the first time i ever played myst, i could barely escape the main island but these days i find it challenging but still very enjoyable. there is no shame in using a walktherough and for many of the later games in the series ( which i personally think are harder) i tend to use them . i haven't played the Talos principle so i cant comment if it compares. but even if you dont finish myst, the experience alone is worth playing for.

@@cursedblake It's not that I am ashamed to use a walkthrough once in a while if i'm really stuck at some point, but if it's so hard that I have to use a walkthrough for the majority of the game, it just spoil the fun for me if you get what I mean. I recently got an interest in puzzle games, but I don't like a game just because it's a puzzle game and I always try to find ones that are hard enough to be engaging, but easy enough for me to not to have to use a walkthrough too much.

So I have heard ( I haven’t seen it yet, planning on going back and finishing this one soon.) that fmv isn’t fixed for the endgame ones, so I don’t think I can give it a 5/5 unless that changes. when and if that changes I will make, a follow up video changing my score. lost track of all the hours I spent on Myst and enjoyed all the puzzles. Most modern games won't attempt the puzzle aspect - players probably couldn't figure stuff out !

I have every version of Myst, and I bought Riven and the rest of the myst games because of MYST 20/21 as I love to call it. Get it? You ses, the vr version came out in 2020 while the pc release came out in 2021 hence 20/21... Look I thought it was clever okay! Eitherway, I bought the game after the fmv's were replaced so I got the optimal version. That said, after beating Myst 20/21 I booted up RealMyst for the first time since..I wanna say 2014 and was amazed to see the game had been fully ported over to unity with an updated WASD control scheme and now I have to say RealMyst is the better version even if the graphics aren't quite to par. Not only does it include the Rime age, but exploration is much better (You can climb up to the top of the ship, walk behind the observatory, etc, etc.), and theirs the day/night cycle that shows Myst Island at various points of time that gives the world even more beauty (especially at dawn ND dusk) If you can, I recomend both versions just because they both have their benefits, but if your penny pinching and can only pick one, RealMyst is definitely the best choice in my eyes.

I am very tempted to do a revisit on realMyst because I do feel like its a different game to myst... maybe I should revisit all the versions of myst... might be hard to get the DS version tho :P

You seem to use "remaster" and "remake" interchangeably. They're different. If it feels like a very substantial upgrade from the original, it's a remake. A remaster is a lesser update, usually only updating textures and/or resolution.

Yeah this is true. I thinking because remaster is the hot thing atm in gaming I just got confused and misspoke really. But totally they haven’t remastered this game, they have remade it. I think there are some blurred lines a smidge, especially when it comes to the soundtrack and fmv ( see my other video on this) which are remastered rather than remade. But yeah totally this seems to be a thing that cyan does, they remake myst every couple of years. Thanks for the comment I do appreciate it, will try and not make this mistake in the future.

No thank you ! Seriously, the criticism is completely valid, and you took the time to be awesome and watch the video! Playthrough time, really it depends. I knew the puzzles for stoneship and mechanical age ( still screwed them up) so it really depends. In filming the footage for the review, I think it took an hour for both ages. But I think give it a good 10 hours ( this is what it would take me I think cos I’m so bad at puzzles but love the story and vibe of the game.) thanks again for the comments and support !

No. When I first heard of this, I was interested in seeing what they had done, and some of the stills look good, but looking at more details reviews and samples, no… Myst Island landscaping looks horrible, too much bare rock and dirt tracks, it may seem to be more realistic, but less "magical". And the 3D rendered faces, what were they thinking? I've got my Myst collection in its Linking Book box (from the Kickstarter campaign), and that will do. Software aside, the Myst Universe is one of my favourite settings.

I wish I had gone in for linking book in that Kickstarter it was amazing. I have always regretted not getting that. I think you are right, the game has less magic now, but with the updates that have been coming ( I made a seperate video on fmv update that fixes a lot of the issues.) I think some of the magic is returning. I think this is definitely the best 3D version of myst, but the oldschool pre-rendered myst definitely still has a place still and would love to see a modern re-creation of that, but I doubt we will get it. Definitely should. If you can get over the removal of FMV ( which I think is only a hardcore fan thing). It is a really amazing remake and looks gorgeous with ray tracing. It definitely is one of those games I think everyone should atleast try playing. Thanks for watching the video!

I would have to agree - I haven't bought the remake - I'm debating about it - but the side by side comparisons that I've seen, I go between the 200 and 2014 version in many things as my favorite, with the latest version as my - I want to go there! - moment! I probably will buy the latest because it's been so long since I've played the original, and I miss the fun of it - but i loved those cut scenes with real people that were done in the past! :)

Tbh this is probably the hardest question when it comes to myst. Any version will be great, but it really depends on personal preference to which one suits better. My big issue with the first Myst was the slide-show character of the game. It wasn't like virtual reality at all. In comparison, The 7th Guest by Trilobyte was mesmerizing. The VR movement was fairly smooth and the characters were also real full-motion video. Unfortunately, "shooter" games won the hearts of the young people, and any game with real thought, drama, and intelligence just about disappeared.

@@cursedblake It won't run on any computer made in the last 25 years. It was designed for the original Win 3.1 and Mac systems. A new "remastered version" I've yet to see has gotten very mixed reviews. (It seems like they can't remaster anything today without screwing it up.)

Yeah they did patch the fmv back in. But not 100%. Think the final scene is still cgi which is a shame. I am working through a randomise run of this game ( which I may put out the gameplay of sometime) so I need to check the final scene again when I finish it

Warning, Myst 2021 from Steam Games does not function on Windows 10 machines. It would not play in regular mode giving me a message that it was not supported. VR mode generated a black screen that crashed my computer so badly I had to actually use the off button to shut down and restart. Even ALT-CTRL-DEL did not function. As a matter of fact, do yourselves favors and avoid ALL Steam games. On that note, from where did you download the game?

The benefit of the point and click style was that with each frame it made you think there might be something hidden or something you were meant to notice, which there eventually was at certain points, and it made you feel clever when you did and used that awareness to solve a puzzle. I can image certain important things being breezed past in a Riven remake if it was all free movement. Also because it's a prerendered image the realism/quality could be much higher as it was for Riven back in the day.

Watched someone stream this today. The load times suck ass and, like you said, the FMV are replaced with those shitty PS2-era models. But you don't know how first-timers react to that. The streamer genuinely thought that Sirrus was a babyface to the point that she refused to collect the blue pages; because the CG doesn't sell him as being a human lizard the way the FMV does, and it kills the game. Any graphical facelifts or randomized puzzles can't make up for that.

I didn’t talk about the load times in my review, but you are right they are slow. I remember watching a review with rand miller, and that was something they put a lot of energy into getting right in the og myst in ‘93. This will probably be something I will talk about on a further video on myst I’m planning on doing soon.. I never thought how the cgi models would affect believability of the characters, so that is really interesting. I think that they should run the fmv as the default option. As it makes the game so much better. Thanks for the comment I really appreciate it
