This game is surprisingly tense. I'm always waiting for that god-awful sound of a citation being printed out a few seconds after I let someone through. It's very simple but really ratchets up the tension.

I actually like that bit with the person who's gender on their passport doesn't match. I don't think its "aged" at all. You check their papers, and "Ah ha! This is wrong." You asked them about it. "What kind of question is this?" they reply. Now you basically strip search them to find out that they do indeed have male genitals. You're led to think you've caught someone, but in reality you've just assumed based on the classifications laid out by the government and their looks. The entire game is great for that, honestly, showing the banality of evil and how someone can think they're doing right by just following the rules. After all, they have a sick child. They can't afford or have the time to question glorious Arztotska. Better to follow the procedures. So what if individual liberties are taken away? Doesn't affect them.

As uncomfortable as that moment is, it's important; the person is presumably a trans woman, who had her gender questioned and was was stripped searched by someone who had power over her. And that scenario is something that's still happening.

It's brilliant you've got around to playing this. The only problem with the game is that it exacerbated my anxiety quite a lot trying to remember all the rules. Aoife is excellent at stamping documents by the way.

When I first bought this I was playing it on my laptop on the couch and I noticed my brother kept looking over to see what I was playing. Soon enough we were playing it together. It really is a weirdly engrossing game as my brother and I, outside of Fallout, have very different tastes and rarely agree on anything. Glory to Arstotzka!

1:01:04 "that's not aged well" - which part of it didn't age well? the reminder that trans people exist and are often discriminated against by laws that exclude them? The invasion of privacy is painful generally but you're already slightly desensitised to it and that just underlines exactly how pointless it is and how much more damaging it gets when it targets certain people. It constantly shakes up the sense that it is just a routine check in a normal job, while reminding you how fast things become routine checks in normal jobs. For a long time it was required for trans people to live for several years as their preferred gender before they qualified for treatment so the situation ingame is not even doing something weird (and some trans people do not have surgery anyway). If it's not legal, then you're living as one gender while all your documents tell people you're another. It's not like it had Germaine Greer pop up and bellow "BURGEONING"
