Yes! The beginning of a most EPIC journey through the QFG series! To me it doesn't matter if you play the EGA or VGA versions of I and II so long as you get to experience the story. Good adventuring!

Thanks! I have a feeling the EGA versions would be more palatable after finishing the remakes - not that there's anything wrong with them, but definitely more difficult to jump into.

The original EGA version is so much more charming.

Paladin is a class that becomes available in part 3, you can earn it fairly easily as a Fighter, a little harder as a magic user, and nearly impossible as a thief. However, because of the way the save games did a whoopsie, at the start of 3 it just asks "Hey, so what class were you?" And your black hearted little criminal can say "Uh, Paladin?" Thief is hard mode, fighter gets the best weapon and a shield, magic user gets several offense spells and starts with "I will put lightning on my knife." Thief just has knife, and maybe throwy knife.
@psychemode2 жыл бұрын
I picked thief because it was more "jack of all trades", and I figured having more stats was going to be better. It makes sense that it'd be worse for combat, but I like to imagine it's better for other problem-solving scenarios.
@muddlewait8844 Жыл бұрын
Best way to go IMO is to be a Thief with magic skill, then pick Paladin like you said at the beginning of 3, then rapid-click on the gopher when he pops out to stockpile Honor. That way you get every ability in the game.
@micahbush53977 ай бұрын
I think you can actually become a Paladin in the second game as a thief, provided you abandon your ignoble profession and focus on gaining honor.
@ericwills9327 ай бұрын
@@micahbush5397 Fair point; a terrible thief *can* become a paladin.
@Null_Experis3 ай бұрын
It's entirely possible to become a paladin as a Thief though honorable actions in QFG2. You just need to not do most thiefy quests.

In these games never put points in skills you can easily train during gameplay (like climbing or lockpicking) because it doesn't matter if you start those at 5 points or 20 points, after a few training sessions you will always end up with enough points. Let's say you need 50 points, you can get there no matter where you started from.
Makes sense! I will still never be able to pronounce it!

I do a hybrid class, fighter with magic skills. Comes in handy in later games. Don’t forget to kill goblins as often as you can to build your fighting skills and get money.

This is one only first game in a series, Sierra game, that I recommend playing in VGA. The rest I recommend playing the EGA versions because the puzzles were designed for using a keyboard and not with a mouse in mind.

@@psychemode I honestly think you will really enjoy the storyline and adventure aspects. The colorful characters are great, too. Also, the different base classes change the game enough to make replay a very real thing. A couple of things (not spoilers). The second game (Trial by Fire) is a typing-based game, like the EGA version of this game. However, there is a free, fan-made version created by AGD that is click-based and is wonderfully done. If you do play the original Trial by Fire, remember that, when you are moving, you just have to press the arrow key once to go one way, then a second time to stop. If you hold the arrow key down, it will do the weird stop-start thing and slow you way down. Good luck, nameless hannah!! PS - in this first game, the days don't really matter, as in nothing specific will always happen on, say, day 12. That does become a thing in subsequent games, however.

@@psychemode :D Yeah, one gotta wonder what the hardware designers were on, when the color palette were picked for EGA graphics. I think that is why I love the style, I admire and am constantly impressed by the dithering work the artists did to make the colors work.

The EGA builds a sense of scale that the VGA sometimes doesn't🎉match. Not sure how I got an emoticon/emoji in there but I can't delete it, awkward phone. Lmao

@micahbush53977 ай бұрын
I prefer the interface of the VGA remake, but I prefer the EGA version overall, both because there's an exploit that allows you to get skills in all areas (you can fine-tune to six skill points, then subtract five, leaving one point, which is sufficient to give you capacity in a particular area) and because you can't retrieve daggers that you've thrown in combat in the VGA version.

I miss games like this, that had actual player freedom, meaningful customization, branching paths based on your choices, and real consequences for taking the low road. This kind of gameplay died when Deus Ex went downhill, and I hate it so much that now player freedom is just "Oh noes, you got the bad ending for doing this!". Even being able to customize your starting stats has become a joke, because the only stats that matter anymore are strength and speed. I hate it so much.
