It's an effect of the capture software recording the frames per second. They blink between the two colors really fast, and because the recording is only getting so many frames per second it sometimes doesn't capture the single mili frame where they're flickering between colors so it looks like they're not changing at all.

I remember doing a full Sonic 3 + Knuckles run for a friend of mine years ago, pretty much showing off that I could do it (S3&K being the Sonic game I have the most experience with by far), and I remember I got like, four of the Super Emeralds in Mushroom Hill (screwed up on a couple of the Special Stages). When did I get the last couple? Lava Reef. Just barely. I'm bad at the S&K Special Stages.

why are the super emerald textures all fucked up?

S3&K runs at 60 frames per second but this video was uploading when KZbin only allowed videos in 30 frames per second. The emeralds flicker between looking normal and flashing white/grey every other frame, so since this video is only 30 frames per second it's only capturing the white frames. Some of my other videos only capture the 'normal' frames, so the emeralds look fine but they aren't flashing like they're supposed to.

in flying battery act 1 there are two single sets of spikes quite close to each other, push them and they reveal a pit that you can fall down onto the big ring.

@Corgblam they look grayed out because that's how the game makes other colors, since the Genesis can only have a total of 64 colors on-screen, so flashing makes the colors brighter or darker, depending on the background, and that's why the background is grey to make the emeralds look like they look. You only see the grey outline because the game updates the screen 60 times a second since it is 60 Hz, but the screen recording software probably only 30 or 15 times a second.

I remember somewhere in Act 2, there's a high spring that takes you to a secret area in the sky with a bunch of rings and one of every type of item box. (Why they thought you need three different types of shield, I have no idea. I suppose it lets you choose your favourite.) I have a feeling it's above the exit from the secret passage at 3:53, where the tall mushrooms are, but don't quote me on it. It's been a while.

Fun Fact: The green special stage is the first one in Sonic & Knuckles, and it is probably the easiest blue spheres stage of all time. I swear, when I was a kid I always practiced doing all the cool shit with this stage, such as practicing jumping over two spheres and inbetween spheres...guess I had alot of time when I was 4, cause after that I realised that playing S&K standalone sucks ass, like a big boy.

I've never needed Tails for the one that transfers to the green pallet, you just need a LOT of speed so you can stay in the upper part of the level.

Everyone likes Lava Reef Zone, even if they hate it. It's one of those super-hard stages (for me, at least) that still manages to be fun because everything is reasonably hard and not just messing around with you. ...Except for the steam that slows you down. I hate that steam...

You have enough giant rings in the mushroom hill to collect all emeralds with knuckles and for sonic you can access 6 giant rings

Holy crap this special stage was always hard for me and I had to map out the whole thing through tests to find out which way to go and stuff and remember XD I was a little kid. Falling off is pretty annoying, but it also makes the stage a little more challenging. Eh....3D Blast is kinda weak. Mostly because it's so hard to navigate with Sonic.
