@Lohkyn I don't really think it's hypocritical, selling high value singles ensures more are on the secondary market to lower the price. I've opened packs for fun from more affordable sets - I get that it's not always about monetary value. Opening packs just isn't possible for a lot of people at the 2x2 price point. IMO the Professor saying "buy singles" is trying to discourage people from opening packs hoping for one or two choice cards or return on investment.

that is just how booster packs in any TCG are. The value of the cards in the pack can swing wildly depending on what pulls are in each pack. Does WOTC have some control of that? yes they set what cards are what rarity and what the print run is at each rarity level and specify what the contents of each pack is on the number of cards of each rarity, then choose if they want to restrict any special art, finishes or borderless cards to certain types of packs. Beyond that it is all math and up to the machines that mix the cards and seal them into boosters. It is just as likely that you buy a bum pack and your buddy who bought one right after got a lottery card ( so to speak) as it is to be the other way around. if anything the odds probably favor both you and your buddy getting meh packs .

I know four packs is a small sample size, but even other channels that have opened these packs have basically pulled the same value in cards as the price of the collector boxes. It's just baffling to me that I'm still hearing people say "the value is incredible!" when they're essentially obtaining singles they didn't want for the same price as they could have found them on the secondary market. Can it be a coincidence that, on average, these boxes are valued approximately at the price of the cards being opened in four packs if they were to be purchased as singles at the current market rate?
