Man, I love your videos... thanks for putting in all the time. I'm an old school total war fan, but while watching this video series there are a couple of things that you do that I don't understand. Why do you not level up generals and spies right away? Also, if there are generals in your capitol doing nothing, shouldn't they be on other cities to help them? Also, I always seem to rush upgrading my towns as big as possible as fast as I can. So far, I haven't seen you upgrade towns at all. I'm far from a good total war player, and answering these questions would help me out a lot. Thank you so much in advance.

Sure, I'd be happy to answer those questions. 1. I don't upgrade my generals and agents right away so that I can save the remaining point for better things down the line. For example when a general reaches level 4, if you kept a point from when he reached level 3, you can immediately max out Infantry Commander giving you an extra +2 melee attack for all infantry under his command. If you put that remaining point into something else you won't be able to get that right away. Same goes for other agents, if I keep a point it's always for that reason. 2. Having generals sit in towns on their own doesn't do anything besides putting them in danger, there's no increased taxrate or anything like that like with Medieval II. The only thing you'd get is +1 happiness (or more if that general has such traits) in that town which you won't usually need anyway, and it means putting an (unleveled) general just behind the frontline by himself where he could get assassinated or whatnot. 3. Upgrading towns is a waste of money, it reduces both your immediate treasury as well as your future income. Each increased level of a town takes away 1 global food which equals 1 wealth in every single one of your towns. The only towns you'll ever want to upgrade are those where you plan on putting Metsuke and your recruitment provinces. The towns where you put Metsuke should have a Sake Den and Market upgraded as far as possible, and your recruitment towns should have whatever buildings you want to recruit units from. Upgrading other towns is a poor decision unless you do it for extra defences, but unless you're a really bad player you won't need those, and also the frontline is always changing, so it would end up becoming a pointless upgrade. Wouldn't it be more effective to put your archers in guard mode so they don't chase units like a mad man and get caught in the process?

+Glenn Homburg I've done that a few times....I've found they still move after their targets for a bit. If you have them fairly close behind your infantry, like I usually do, they wind up chasing targets and walking right into your infantry line. Really annoying that they won't stay put. I'm still learning to play, and I hope I can figure out how to keep that from happening. Frikkin archers.....

+Steven Bentley I think the best way to avoid this is to not really target units manually with your archers but just have them in guard mode + fire at will. Haven't played Shogun 2 in a while (I thought there was a fire at will option too though), been busy with the Swedes in ETW but there my line infantry stays put when I don't target any units but just let them fire at the first target that comes in range. The fact that you don't fire at the target of your preference may be a downside, but the fact that your archers stay where you want them to stay (possibly resulting in unwanted friendly fire, extra casualties, awkward heaps of people, etc.) more than makes up for it imo.

Glenn Homburg Hyup. In fire-at-will mode, neither archers nor line infantry will chase down a target who moves out of range. Even melee infantry will only chase them if you specifically give them a target, but neither are supposed to do that if you have them in guard mode. I think guard mode is broken for archers in Shogun 2. Also playing a Russian campaign in NTW. Just about to take out the Ottomans in a couple turns....huzzah.

Gawd, I can't tell you how many times I've run my Cav on the flank of the enemy and have them decimated by a relentless bunch of infantry that will walk 'miles' out of the main battlefield to track them down. I always get distracted by the main fight and lose them. 😡Damn those determined Ashigaru! (Same thing happens in NTW as well.)

Dude I dont know what I am doing wrong but i am playing on hard level and my games are harder than yours ıdk why.I tried to play exatcly like you for example when you invade sogo they had ashigarus and 2 samurai or kinda like that but when I tried to invade them(on the exact same turn) they had 6 yari samurai and 4 bow ashigaru.and also no one wants to trade with although I have these trade nodes that you have.Everybody keeps declaring war on me for no reason(no loot) it makes no sense when legendary looks easier than just ‘hard’ ps: yes i am mad 😂

I was wondering why you never use the Rally option on your generals?

Because this Let's Play is from 2014 and does not represent my current experience with the game. That said I still find it a mostly useless skill, if your men have steady or higher morale it literally does nothing. It's only useful to use when your men are on the brink of routing to make sure they don't.

Just curious, have you ever recruited through a general? When the troops are done they automatically go to that general.

Nah, I prefer being fully in control. It would be exactly the same if after recruiting I just right clicked the general and didn’t touch them anymore. Then they walk around towns and such, so I prefer just controlling it from start to finish.

Did you point out about the +2 exp for RECRUIT bow army four your tech research ? Im thinking that you are thinking the (keen marksman) bonus is for speed up your research speed ? i think you were misunderstood ? is it ?

Whats the use of upgrading roads?, will that also increase income?

It increases the movement speed on the campaign map, and at later levels also gives a wealth per-turn increase to the province.

I play at least one later on in this campaign. Once I play the Mori I will do more naval battles as well, I generally avoid them cause I dislike them.

Fall of the samurai naval battles are bad ass though :D The iron clad wrecks shit though, my 1 ship soloed 10 of the medium ships the AI spammed lol :) epic to watch the explosion
