In the USA, the foods known as jelly, jam, and Jello are all different. Although jelly and jam are both spreadable, fruit preserves. Jelly is a fruity spread that have no fruit solids nor seeds and almost like gelatin. Jam has a bit looser consistency and have chunks of fruit and may contain seeds, etc. And there are also preserves, which is similar to jam but thicker and typically have large chunks of fruit. Jello is a US brand name of powered gelatin and is so ingrained in the USA's culture that we refer to gelatin as Jello as most gelatin dishes found here are going to be made from Jello.

"All You Nerd is Love" was a non-album single on its original 1967 release in the UK, but was included on the U.S. "Magical Mystery Tour" LP later that same year. John Lennon was the lead singer and primary songwriter. "Magical Mystery Tour" was the only U.S. exclusive LP made part of the official canon discography when they came to CD in the late '80s, probably to keep the non-album tracks collection "Past Masters" to two volumes rather than three. Side one of the LP was the original British "Magical Mystery Tour" double-EP, resequenced. Side two were the rest of the band's non-album singles and b-sides from 1967.

Then this gelée method was exported from France around the world and many other countries used the name "gelée" (or as it became called in America Jelly) however xenophobic England dropped the filthy foreign word gelée and instead coined the term "Jam" to lay English credit on something that wasn't theirs. But on a more serious note maybe stow the xenophobia in the future Kimberley. Also speaking from experience both inside and outside America Jam and Jelly are often used for two distinct types of fruit spreads. Americans have Jelly, Jam, and Preserves as separate types of jarred fruit spreads...
@epicureanbard Жыл бұрын
As an American aware of the Jelly vs Jello debate, I found that exchange absolutely cathartic because I did some researching in my teen years to determine the difference between all the fruit spread categories. In America, there's preserves (which has chunks of fruit or whole fruit in it), there's jam (which is made with crushed or chopped fruit), there's jelly (which is made solely from the strained juice of the fruit), and there's Jello (named from the brand name Jell-o, which is what the UK calls jelly, which is traditionally sweet but has been made savory in the past). Then there's marmalade, but that's just a subcategory of preserves made specifically with citrus with rinds included. The UK are not alone on the 'jelly' side of the argument. I once got some 'sakura jelly' from Japan and was surprised to find out that it was what I would recognize as 'jello' with cherry blossom flowers suspended in it, not the kind of jelly I would spread on toast.
