The Homestar Runner game Chip mentions is not merely Dungeonman, but of course the classic Thy Dungeonman. Of course I personally prefer the sequel Thy Dungeonman II, but I think Thy Dungeonman 3 jumped the shark a bit by including graphics

Thy Dungeonman II is also my fav, it has the incredible joke of the only enemies being Mongrels, Hongrels, and Longrels, which you must strike appropriately High, Low, or Middlin'.

There's a ton out there for anybody interested in text adventures, or interactive fiction, the name usually used by the group of people who made them mostly for free after the medium died commercially. There's much to like from the Infocom era, but the latter-day scene has some really interesting stuff: the key necessary skill and action for creators being writing leads to a lot of creativity you might not otherwise see. Just to call out one thing specifically, particularly if you're into words and wordplay, I highly recommend Counterfeit Monkey by Emily Short.

I would absolutely love to watch you guys play the whole thing, but I gotta warn you - Zork is totally unforgiving. Like, nobody had invented that yet. Not only do you have to map, take notes, and save often, you will occasionally need to start totally over and re-do everything you’ve figured out so far but *more efficiently*. The whole thing is a giant order-of-operations puzzle, and it doesn’t give you enough leeway to fumble through it. I hope that isn’t too discouraging, it really is a classic despite that.

the trophy case is where the treasures you recover from the dungeon go, you see that in plenty of games these days, zork was way ahead of the curve on that one

yknow. this is surprisingly engaging to watch. normally chip has all the super deep knowledge and context for a game you're LPing, so there's something refreshing about him and grant and me all being in the same boat of "i have absolutely no idea what to do or where to go or what might possibly exist in this world"

Making a game in QBASIC must be pretty common; we had the same task. Solo, though. And the teacher was asking us to make a snakes'n'ladders type of game, but to spice it up by being creative with the placement of the "squares" on-screen. I said to hell with that and made a 3x3 grid where you controlled five soldiers against a rudimentary computer opponent also controlling five soldiers, where the goal was to destroy the enemy's base, complete with defense value modifiers, teleporters, and an intelligent menu that would change depending on what you could do and if your soldiers still had a movement point. It was over 6,000 lines of code, took more than three minutes to load up, and I never finished figuring out how to make soldiers "die" when their health ran out. I got 96% and I suspect my idiot of a teacher checked to see if the game loaded without issues and then gave up looking at how big the program was. I say he was an idiot because I basically taught the class for him. It took me a week to know QBASIC better than he did. The guys who were REALLY into programming ran circles around him. Good memories.

Zork quits to the DOS prompt after telling you you died. This closes the window when you're starting it standalone. I don't know if you have the whole thing recorded, but if not, use a Windows-based interpreter to play it instead. Oh, and use G (for AGAIN) to repeat commands.
