Fellow Canadian here, and man let me tell you I love GSP. No matter what he will always be a legend and arguably the greatest to ever do it. A true champion inside and outside the cage. However, mma fans are so selective with who they accuse of steroids and peds based off of who they like. If Usman is on steroids and or peds during Usada even though he’s never failed a drug test (nobody has any concrete proof only speculation) but GSP wasn’t on steroids pre Usada when there was much more leeway in terms of now banned substances, it just shows the bias a lot of fans have. Both guys never popped but the one fighting under way more intense drug testing is the one that’s juicing? This exact delusion just goes to show how a large portion of mma fans cannot be unbiased when speaking about these great fighters. The truth of the matter is everyone was on sauce pre Usada and why wouldn’t they be? A lot of banned substances today were LEGAL back then. Athletes are going to use any advantage they can to one up their opponent in any sport, and like I said back then a wide variety of steroids and peds were allowed due to their being no Usada. So to act as if GSP wasn’t on steroids here is utter ridiculousness. You can’t use steroids to tear fighters legacies down like Usman and then use it to boost up guys like GSP even though he literally fought in an era when a lot of now banned substances were legal. Same thing with Jon Jones and Fedor. People shit on Jones (understandably so, the guy is an asshole outside the cage, but we have to do our best to separate the person from the fighter to keep it real here). As I was saying, people shit on Jones (the fighter) and act like all of his opponents pre Usada were not also all on juice (machida, vitor, shogun, Chael, ) etc. Meanwhile he never even popped pre Usada. In fact he didn’t even pop for a serious ped until ufc 200 during Usada. However fedor popped pre Usada but nobody even bats an eye. Instead people use the even playing field excuse, which is fair, but then why not keep the same energy when talking about Jones? The point I’m trying to make here is we all need to do better as fans. Stop hating. You don’t have to like every fighter, none of us do. However we need to appreciate greatness and the good times these guys provide us because we will miss all of these amazing athletes when they retire. Try your best to call it even for all fighters whether you like them, or not, without bias. If you praise GSP for “never testing positive” but then shit on Usman for literally the same thing you just praised GSP for, based off of the exact same criteria you had for GSP: no facts and only speculation, then you’re a biased hypocrite. If it was ok for fedor to use peds pre Usada (which doesn’t seem to affect his legacy according to most people) because everyone was using back then, why is it not ok for Jon Jones, Hendricks, etc to do so without their legacies having heavy asterisks?

The mistake here is judging the fight by what's on 'paper' regarding the scoring rules and not by how fights were actually judged back then. Yes, by those rules you can certainly make an argument for Hendricks, but those rules were seldom, if ever followed. In reality the way the fights were judged were nothing at all like the rules stated. First, Take downs were judged far more important than just normal strikes or even 'significant' strikes ... you needed to far out strike someone in order to have a clear advantage in striking ... a takedown could negate a big advantage in jabs, and unless you actually 'obviously rocked' someone then a minor take-down could still overcome a large 'jabbing' disadvantage. Second, cuts were almost meaningless, as a matter of fact some fighters were given credit or even awarded for their 'blood mask' fighting style. The judges were aware that some people bled and bruised more easily or visibly and for the most part ignored the blood unless it was from a significant blow that 'rocked' the fighter ... and IMO this is a reasonable way to judge, no matter what the rules say. Third, submission attempts were (and still are) not as insignificant as you make them out to be ... the very fact you get yourself into a position to apply the submission attempt was worth a lot In my opinion, judging by how the fights were actually judged back then (as a fan who has watched EVERY PPV, nearly every UFC event, and started watching and was hooked since TUF #1) GSP legitimately won that fight ... if we are to go through the fight, move by move reviewing the 'rule book' then while you might be able to make an argument for Hendricks, you'd also be making an argument for over turning a lot of other UFC fights that were judged the same way, and which you could make an argument that they were judged incorrectly if you go strictly by what's written in the rules, but in the end the better fighter won despite having more of his blood on the ring canvas!

Also the contender needs to actually win and dominate to beat the champ, that is true in all the decisions championship fights in all organizations, split decisions usually go to the champ, benefit of the doubt. You want to avoid controversy as a fighter, don’t go 5 rounds with GSP, he wins all decisions, submit or knock him out.

It depends on how you analyze damage. You gave Hendricks 2 heavy that I don't think we're heavy by watching the fight. Also, the brusing started after round 3 so in round 1, visible damage wasn't there. On the ground, the first guillotine by GSP was tight, some people even say that Hendricks tapped or was about to but then GSO changed position to top control. Still very hard fight to score and let's not forget, Hendricks was on all sort of Tropicana concentrates those days.

In real time, the judges can't easily count the heavy attack and medium attack accurately as you did through slow motion. So going by what I see in the first round from this video - I think the first round could have gone either way. GSP landed more strikes 29-28. In real time judges could have missed a few of those knee strikes to the legs during grappling exchange. Also in grappling exchange they both had 1 takedown each with GSP trying to utilize his position with a couple of submission attempts that could have caught the eye of the judges. So when there is nothing much to separate the two fighters, the Champions get the benefit of doubt. This is in no way a robbery my friend.

It was an extremely close fight, the only reason there was so much drama around it was because Goerges was such a dominant champion for so long and his pretty sensitive skin (he's fairly prone to showing damage, unlike someone like BJ Penn) making it look like he took a more one sided beating than he really did. I do think it's really funny and perhaps a bit telling that many of the people that defend Hendricks over this fight have a the "you gotta beat the champ to be the champ" attitude about Jon Jones' close fights and many of the people that defend GSP winning this fight think Jon lost to Reyes

Jones definitely lost to Reyes, and a good argument can be made that GSP lost this fight as well. But the fact Hendricks won the belt anyway afterwards and began to decline after USADA came along makes it less controversial in hindsight. Meanwhile poor Dominick Reyes is on a two fight skid with two brutal KO losses while never officially winning the belt or getting a chance to run it back with Jones, who like the insecure narcissist he is still maintains he won it fair and square.

Regardless of who actually won, I think we can all agree this fight was a classic and also a clear indication that GSP's dominance as champion was coming to an end. The competition was catching up to GSP and he arguably left at the right time. Hendricks did manage to win the UFC belt afterwards anyway in another all-time classic with a resurgent Robbie Lawler.

One question though, you showed that the old rules stated that if a round was affected more by striking, the striking would weight more heavily, and the same for grappling, but if that is the case, then why the hell so many times back in the day a fighter stole a round by getting a takedown despite getting outstruck for the majority of the round? Thanks; great content as always. I'm a huge fan of St Pierre, but, at the time, I thought Hendricks won. I was amazed that St Pierre survived the damage he took, and very impressed that he was able to continue to fight effectively (even more impressive if Hendricks was using PEDs). I thought Hendricks was robbed, and it was yet another example of judges favouring a popular Champion over the challenger. That said, still a huge fan of St Pierre; he's a class act.

Everyone should rewatch R2 as that was closer than I think people realize. Hendricks only had a minute and a half of big strikes and the rest was Georges landing power jabs, Head kicks and Really good Overhand's. That round could have honestly went either way too. Hendricks only wobbled georges but he never dropped him.

I totally agree with you on this one! Hendricks was throwing beautiful combinations that really hurt George. In George's post fight interview he said, when asked a question, "I just came out of a freaking war, that guy hit like a truck, my brain got bashed left + right inside my skull." It's almost never that you hear a fighter that won give such praise to their opponent in such an honest + complete manner. GSP, I believe, is one of the most humble, respected, + great fighters in UFC history. Johnny Hendricks is a cop in Texas.

Decided to take my own advice and rewatch the first round, use slo mo where needed, and have the COMMENTARY MUTED. My unemotional take (full disclosure, was never a big fan of Hendricks and respect what GSP did in his career.) of what i saw… Strikes while grappling (95% of Hendricks total strikes,60% of GSPs) were fairly even and more annoying than hurtful, with exception of the good elbows by Hendricks against the fence while GSP was bent over trying to lift him). Strikes at distance (5% of Hendricks, 40% of GSPs) were mostly touches, with one hook by Hendricks the only significant one, while GSP landed a couple of good kicks and with 1:30 to go stunned Hendricks with a check left hook. Never noticed before, but in slo mo you can see Hendricks stumble forward awkwardly for a brief moment and his trailing left foot and ankle bend "wobbly" as he regained his bearings. Takedown by Hendricks was a gentle leg lift sit down type on the fence. GSPs takedown was a quick and forceful one, then a sub attempt, then as Hendricks was getting up GSP quickly flipped him back down and attacked the neck again. Summary, Hendricks had three positive moments (one hook/good succession of elbows, and a minor take or sit down). GSP had three positive moments (explosive takedown, sub attempt, adjust to put Hendricks back down and another sub attempt/dangerous head kick partially blocked/check hook that stunned Hendricks momentarily.) Really close round, and i would give it to GSP as his takedown and sub attempts were much better and more dangerous than Hendrick's sit/take down, the elbows by Hendricks and his hook sort of evened out with GSPs dominance in distance fighting with head/body kicks and the solid left check hook, number of strikes period were basically even, and GSP had both more octagon control and aggression overall. I see it as GSP 10-9. (I do understand my synopsis and 25 cents still won't get a cup of coffee, but i did this more for myself to put facts into my head instead of long ago memories of emotional reactions.)

Clearly did more damage? Yeah hard to tell, especially in real time. The judges then looked to grappling, which showed GSP almost submitting Hendricks. A submission that was tight enough to the point that people thought Hendricks tapped. Yeah sorry, GSP had the most strikes and the better grappling. He won the round. Definitely not a robbery.

Legit blew my mind seeing this in my recommended just now. Edit: now the real question, if this counted as a loss on GSPs record, Jones loss to Reyes and possibly Gustafgspn, not sure how you scored that one. Regardless, if we look at every fighters record, not how it appears historically, but we fans truly view Records, (ie. Hendricks beats gsp) who is the Goat? Do GSP and Jones go lower in the discussion? Do khabib, DJ, Anderson, etc. get held in a higher regard now? Would be an awesome podcast question

Any loss effects a fighters standing in the GOAT conversation unless its avenged. If GSP lost this fight to Hendricks then avenged it in a rematch, nothing would change. Jones has pretty much ruined his standing in the GOAT conversation with his failed drug tests, shit performances after popping and controversial decision wins which have aged like milk that he still acts like he won them fair and square.

2yrs later I know but after rewatching round 1 because of your video, I disagree on some of your interpretation, GSP didnt barely win the grappling. He clearly won it ( a take down that landed hendricks flat on his back AND effectively leading to a submission attempt vs a take down on the fence where GSP fell on his butt ( due to the fence) and it didnt lead to any other grappling or submission attempt ) we have half a point for hendricks vs at the very least one and a half for gsp. As per the striking, thank to this video I payed extra attention to them inside knees (if you discard those GSP would have won the striking as well) the point is they can be hard to notice especially from where the judges are sitting. GSP won the grappling, while the striking was barely won by Hendricks, because of those knees. bottom line round could have gone either way (this is a change from my previous assessments). One thing to mention, especially in the early rounds of a championship fight, in order to win the rounds vs the champ you have to decisevely win it. As it was mentionned in other comments the fact Hendrix was the first in a long time who made GSP look bad, a lot of ppl think it was robbery. Hendricks didnt decisevely win that round, and interpretation will still split the results down the middle but in no shape or form was this a robbery, it was a close fight and the champion kept his belt nothing wrong with that.

When GSP locked the guillotine on initially, Johnny Hendricks tapped. The referee did not see it and GSP let go prematurely, that is the closest the flight was to being stopped. That's why I think the judges gave it to GSP

This was clearly a striking round dominant round and therefore striking is weighed higher than grappling in this round. It wasn't all that close in this round, regarding striking. Hendricks clearly won.

LETS GOOOOOO!! I was asking for this for like 16 years straight.🤣 It’s been hard for me to find a full version of this fight that’s not trash quality, so I never got to watch it. Honestly, this fight was pretty close. Everytime I heard people talk about it they made it seem like GSP got 10-8’d in every round. I wouldn’t call this a robbery. (Especially bc Hendricks was almost certainly on them picograms🤣)
