So it looks like the Hong Kong (not Japanese) poster art is from Tom Jung, the American movie poster artist, hence why the Turkish and Hong Kong ones have the same composition, the Hong Kong one is just purple and lighter for some reason. There are English versions of this poster in a colour scheme closer to the Turkish one, so the Hong Kong ones design contribution is mainly in the typography and purple dreamy tint.

Thanks! Naturally I can't be sure, but this one is being sold online as a Japanese poster, in numerous webshops 👀

@@dantierandbaloghthe thing is, mainland China would not have gotten empire strikes back in 1980, it was only just opening out to the world with Deng XiaoPing in power, while Hong Kong was quite wealthy at the time. Hong Kong artists and designers often used Japanese art and music in their work in the 80s and 90s. I know star wars was shown in cinemas in Hong Kong because my dad saw it then, so my guess is this art is from a Japanese poster and a promoter just added or translated the Chinese characters. Incidentally, part of the reason Chinese and Japanese design includes more typography is probably because the written language is not phonetic, (aside from katakana and hiragana in Japanese) it’s pictographic. The shape of words conveys meaning and a scifi western sequel movie probably needed some more background context provided to an Asian audience anyway. E.g. they wrote ‘star’ and ‘star war’ multiple times, and I think if u have no concept of star wars before seeing this poster, you wouldn’t pick up from this art that it takes place in space.

Confirmed, my mum says the text in red is the name of 2 HongKong specific cinemas so definitely not Japanese, but from Hong Kong. (There is no way mainland China had empire strikes back in cinemas, and they don’t use traditional Chinese)
