So Gåte's text is based on and distilled from an ancient ballad about a maiden who lost her mother when she was born, but later got a stepmother. The stepmother was so jealous of the girl that she transformed her first into a sword and placed it in the king's courtyard. However, the girl's inherent goodness also manifested in the sword, even though she had been changed into an object. All the finest knights and soldiers favoured this sword above all other swords, and the envious stepmother then transformed the maiden into a needle. The most skilled tailors loved this needle and sewed the most beautiful clothes with it. The stepmother grew even angrier and turned the girl into a wolf, cursing her to roam the forest forever, unable to rid herself of the wolf form unless she drank her brother's blood. And so it was. The maiden wandered through the woods. For eight years, the stepmother stayed indoors, afraid to venture out because she knew the wolf maiden was out there. But then she became pregnant and wanted to go to church. The wolf pounced on her, seized the stepmother's blue cloak, pulled her off her horse, tore out her heart, and drank her blood and thereby also her brother's blood. With that act, the curse and enchantment were lifted, and the maiden emerged, just as beautiful and kind as before, and returned home to her father.

Even though you don’t get the lyrics you do sense the darkness and dark magic. This is the story of an orphaned girl that’s cursed by her stepmother to wear a wolf pelt and roam the forest alone until she drinks her brother’s blood. Years later she encounters her stepmother in the forest and kills her. The stepmother is pregnant with a boy so the curse is broken at last.

Thanks for this great reaction🤘 I’m so proud that we’re sending Gåte to Malmö with this amazing song😍😍 Yes, the intro is an old “kulokk”, and the chorus is inspired by this “kulokk” Ulveham (wolfskin) [Sample: Vocalization; Marit Jensen Lillebuen] [Verse 1] I was such a beautiful maiden My stepmother evil, my mother she died She turned me into a sword and a needle And sent me to the king's estate And the anger my stepmother felt the most That all the stately liked me best [Chorus: Vocalization] [Verse 2] Then she gave me skin like a grey wolf She cursed me to walk the forest alone And never will I bе whole and good Before I drink my brothеrs' blood [Chorus: Vocalization] [Outro: Vocalization, Storm] I then tore out her heart So her blood flowed free Then I got to drink my brothers' blood

What she is doing is not a lokk, but a kauk. It's a very similar action, but kauking is between people while lokking is between a human and animals. She is not calling animals, but making her presence known, so it's a kauk. It's a bit esoteric though, so it's understandable that they just call it lokk, because that was used until much more recently.
@JarydReacts6 ай бұрын
Idk the Eurovision audience can be quite animalistic.. 🤔🤣
@jeschinstad6 ай бұрын
@@JarydReacts Probably a valid point and also this goes back to pre-Christian times and if I don't see a distinction between humans and animals today, I'm not so sure they would've either. Thinking about it now, it's quite possible that the distinction between kauking and lokking did not exist when the original song was written. I wanted to say that I was impressed by your Norwegian pronunciation, but you got one thing wrong. It's not wolf's pelt, but wolf's clothing. The lyrics is really dark, but her step-mother transformed her into a wolf by a curse that would only be lifted when she drank her brothers blood. So she waited until her step-mother got pregnant and then drank her blood because that was the blood of her brother and her curse was lifted. There are no Tinker Bells in Norwegian bedtime stories. It's all terror and gore, but I believe that the logic is to build trust without danger and I'm actually not sure that's wrong. «There are monsters who only come out at night when you sleep and they want to feast on your flesh. Goodnight and sleep well. I will keep you safe».

@@JarydReacts I liked your commenting on the staging and the camera-focus. I wonder if it was slightly better in the national finals. Somehow, I got tired of those hurricane waves repeating themselves in the Grand final. A storm is supposed to pass, not go on repeat. Storms and hurricanes are one-time-events in their effects. The original staging had more variation.
