We're celebrating Halloween by paying tribute to the classics. I'm talking of course about the Universal Monsters, Dracula, Wolfman, Frankenstein, the Mummy, and much more. However their films recently have kind of been duds so today we're kicking off a brand new show where we're going to tell you how we'd relaunch their franchises.
Thanks for sticking with us all throughout Thorgiween, and remember you can get yourself some Thorgiween merch over at our store at

I love the idea of a proper Dracula origin story. The last scene could even be a re-filming of the beginning of the 1931 film. The film would end with Dracula on the staircase introducing himself and saying "I bid you welcome" and just flash upon his evil grin and fade to black because we all know what happens next. Rumor and innuendo is that there was supposed to be a Dracula origin story initially in Dracula's Daughter juxtaposed with the main story with Lugosi playing the Count and how he became a vampire. Speaking of Dracula's Daughter, that would be a film I'd love to see remade with this franchise along Phase 2 as I always felt it was underrated compared to the others.

i also love his jordan peele "wolfman" approach especially when he spoke on the hypnotic scene in "get out" and the whole movie "us" is about a "evil dual personality" peele would be perfect for the wolfman and i love his van helsing apporach thats one thing thats always missing from other "redo the universal dark verse" he should be the glue that blends all the monsters together without actually having a monster team up

How about a modern day van helsing who was a retired Navy seal special ops with severe pstd and a history of psychiatric illness in his family and fights these monsters as a means to deal with his own inner demons hell a trilogy of films based off in him would be him dealing with the antagonist but slowly forshadowed van helsing a descent into madness to the point he starts believing he's the very thing he hunts or maybe the monsters are halucinations and in fact turns out van helsing is a serial killer with psychotic episodes and it ends with him fighting in a asylum or abandoned hospital, dies and the whole movie are random flashbacks or stories van helsing tells his doctors or the police when interrogated. “I think, in the right hands, you can turn the Phantom from a tragic, lowly, disfigured musician into a truly disturbing slasher” This has actually been done before! There are a couple slasher Phantom films, and the most popular is the 1989 Phantom of the Opera, starring Robert Englund himself (yes, Freddy Krueger) as the titular character. While certain parts of the movie’s plot are confusing (mainly the beginning and the end), I’ve heard quite a few people say that it didn’t stop them from loving the movie as a whole. Not to mention the music, which was absolutely stunning. Many have said that this was Robert Englund’s best acting. I think it would be cool if you took the things that the movie got right and expanded upon it.

I have been telling friends for 20 years or more that we need a new Creature from the Black Lagoon (also why I consider the Swamp Thing movie a Halloween type movie because of the similarity). Starting with him is great and I love your pitch for the shared universe. I will have to really search for any better directors than you have chosen. So good job Proff T.
@majingojira
@majingojira 7 жыл бұрын
There's two things that stand out to me as mistakes with this pitch. One is a flat out research failure. The Creature ISN'T a mutant. He's a "Living Fossil". His whole gimmick is that he's a creature who has lived passed his 'era' to still stalk the earth. So that entire pitch kind of falls apart in that light. The other inconvenient light is the actual historical figure of Vlad Tepes. You probably could go down the road you describe just by recounting Vlad's actual history, just with some darker emphases. Like he would have some humanizing traits, but once he is made into a vampire (which, personally, I Hate-Hate-Hate the idea that Dracula was the 'first' vampire, because Mesopatamia exists and had many of the oldest monsters already written down). Everything else sounds pretty good, but I have some mythology quibbles with it if only because I know to much actual folklore that when I see people deviate from it in ways that are not as cool as the folklore, I get annoyed. I'm elitist and pedantic like that, I guess. Only other thing. The Unifying Force. I mean, 'Satan' being the source is all well and good until you get to the Mole People, the Metalunan Mutant, the killer robot from "The Phantom Creeps", the Deadly Mantis . . . not exactly a way to explain those with the devil very easily. The main way I'd do it is have some of these monsters, like the Creature, be an ancient attempt to destroy creation back in . . . the Permian. Because the Dinosaurs are overplayed, and 90% of all life dying out is a bigger threat. And it lets the Creature, Deadly Mantis, and a few others make more sense as 'prior tools of death and destruction'. I'd also be the person who would work in the OBSCURE universal monsters. Like Curucu, the Leach Woman, and Lamian serpent women. There's a lot that could be done with those as concepts (mostly because the sources of those critters didn't do much with them!). I think that's enough spec from me in a youtube comment.

@LupineShadowOmega
@LupineShadowOmega 7 жыл бұрын
He's not a fresh face, but how did Del Toro not make it into this? That guy would go all in with this. Also if we're doing Dracula again, less Nosferatu and more Alucard. A Dracula that is like some sort of Lovecraft horror. Our Drac needs to look like a 30 Days of Night Vampire turned up to eleven in his true form. Pale deadish skin, black soulless eyes, and a gaping maw of razor fangs. You said vermin, but it needs to be more alien than that. It needs to be like there is nothing actually human there and the humanity is an utter lie. A tool so that a horror can walk the earth with impunity. As for the violence, it needs to be like getting bitten by a shark. Blood everywhere, and he needs to luxuriate in it. And steal a bit more from other forms of mythologies. Dracula has glamour and mind tricks, he never looks human, he's the monster with soulless eyes and a gaping maw. Maybe that's why he has to hide his reflection. Tiamat is your ultimate villain. She's the primordial goddess of Babylon, a creation goddess that was driven to become the mother of all monsters. She can be sympathetic if you want, but if not, she's the embodiment of chaos.

I'm gonna say a few things that aren't really contradictions just thoughts I had before this video about how I'd do this before the video came out. 1. When I saw the trailer for "The Shape of Water" by Guillermo del Toro I caught what I thought were Creature from the black Lagoon references(found 1954, in South America) and I thought Guillermo del Toro was doing a better job of making a Dark Universe then Universal. He took a classic monster and did something completely different with it, ala told a Beauty and the Beast story. 2.Some critics really liked Dracula Untold and I imagined if they made a sequel it would have Wernor Herzog as Van Helsing because if you wanted to make Dracula a hero but then have him become evil, then have a creepy guy play Van Helsing.

You had me until Satan. Satan is a hard sell when you have in your franchise: A) Egyptian magic which predates Christian faith and makes the Satan thing weird when the mummy is invoking the powers of Set and Apep, and such. Sure you could argue they are basically the same ancient evil with a different name BUT B) This Island Earth. A lesser known but still very much Universal Monster movie, and an alien movie. It isn't the Wolfman or Dracula but the alien is still marketed and built as a Universal Monster. After the fears of Earth are explored, the fears of the outer unknown are next. And tying aliens to Satan is some Doctor Who shit that the average audience is going to mock and meme faster and a Tom Cruise yell. I love the idea, and there are lesser known movies by Universal to drawn inspiration from. Going the Satan route so early is...a bad idea. Is one man gonna kill Satan? What is this Supernatural? Though...if you substitute Satan for nameless ancient horror...and got me Del Toro and let him make a certain movie about madness and mountains he's wanted to do for ages... Okay. Back in, but I recommend a change. Satan is too grounded in Earth and human faith. Cthulu and the Ancient ones a dark magic, ancient, evil, and beyond Earth. Too bad The Thing From Another World isn't Universal...

Well... The FIRST reboot attempt was the working title CGI Frankenstein. It was to pick up right after the events of the classic original film. The Monster would be the iconic monster, with Karloff's face and voice digitized onto a huge Hulk-like body. Universal offered Karloff's estate a starring credit for Boris posthumously, along with a starring payday, but Sarah Karloff nixed it as it didn't coincide with her never ending crusade to have her dead dad declared a saint. The SECOND attempt was the Mummy films starring Brendan Fraser, with Arnold Vosloo as Imhotep. Great kick off BUT... Universal handed them the other monsters as well, and we got that God awful Van Helsing movie. That, Universal getting sidetracked and screwing the pooch on the Scorpion King, and the third Mummy film with Jet Li sunk the reboot. The THIRD attempt was 2010's the Wolf Man. I loved it. It did good box office in the States, but didn't in Asia. (Fuck the Chinese!) Initially, Universal was talking sequel and gave Frankenstein to Gulermo del Toro to develop (het, two guys naed Del Toro working on the same franchise) but Universal wanted a hulking Frankenstein to ultimately meet the Wolf Man in battle while Del Toro wanted a smaller, emo Monster portrayed by his friend Doug Jones. That never was settled as Del Toro abandoned the project to work on the Hobbit and had the Hellboy franchise yanked away as punishment. The FOURTH attempt was Dracula Untold, which sucked canal water compared to Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula, but was better than the craptastic Dracula in Van Helsing. It WAS going to be the first film in Dark Universe, but got the boot and we got the new Mummy (and any Family Guy fan can tell you why Tom Cruise is always running in his movies. So... we now have a FAT Russell Crow as a particularly unintimidating Mister Hyde, a dissected Miss Mummy, and Tom Cruise of Arabia. But OH IT GET'S BETTER! The Bride of Frankenstein is supposed to be a modern woman, kicking that man to the curb and getting her groove on. The Monster is a mall, very small, Spanish guy who will look particularly puny if they go ahead with their plans to have the Rock play the Wolf Man. Hopefully, the Creature will retain his classic look and they'll put Scarlet Johannsen in a white swimsuit... Johnny Depp? Really?

I'd personally just leave it as a 1 note showing he was a good man before and through the hudreds of years the power eventually consumed him and now he's nothing but a bloodthirsty monster with no remorse.

I really like everything you said. As for the Satan part or just demonic in general. Look it's EXTREMELY difficult to give Horror in general the shared universe treatment let alone THE classic monsters. But you sound like you could make it work so I am very impressed. The only change I would make is what if instead of Satan or something like that we can still go the demon route BUT we make OUR OWN DEMON. Get some big minds from the horror community and bring them together to create a NEW classic monster for this Generation. Something truly scary and horrifying that would be worthy to stand beside Dracula Frankenstein's Monster and the others.

To me if you're looking to utilize Classic Monsters, you don't apply a modern mold. No "Shared Universe" gimmick, ignore present day and it's BS tropes. You start at the beginning, the dawn of monsters. The Creature or The Mummy, slowly progressing in time and civilization with each film, each monster. You would only be *building* towards the modern day, that's the end goal. The things the films would _share_ would be aesthetic, tone etc You make them Horror. Not Action-Horror. Use the monsters to explore the different facets of Horror itself. Body Horror (Frankenstein, Phantom) Psychological Horror (Invisible Man, Jekyll and Hyde) Gothic Horror (Dracula, Van Helsing) Supernatural Horror (Mummy, Wolf-Man) Natural Horror (Creature, Curucu) Science Fiction Horror (Incredible Shrinking Man, It Came From Outer Space) Disaster Horror (The Mad Ghoul, The Mole People) Slasher Horror (Horror Island, Quasimodo)

Quite the pitch using the monsters to explore the nuance as it were of the various types of horror cinema have implemented over the years. The interesting thing would be the timeline and the "endgame" of this universe if it had one it could just simply not have one or even a explicitly clear goal just vague clues sprinkled around and let's the viewer put the pieces to the puzzle

As you were describing your vision for a new, adapted Dracula - my first thought was the character played by Al Pachino in The Devils' Advocate. He starts out as mainly a low-key, reasonable executive - but you soon realize the evil that lurks just beneath the surface. Very sinister and scary.

Dr. Jeckle and MR. Hyde end credits scene. “You sure about this?” “Every tool belt needs a hammer.” Hellsing and the survivor from Creature approaches Hyde. “You both traveled all this way just to die.” One pulls .45 while Hellsing stops him. “We want to speak with your other. It could benefit you both.” Hyde turns back into the Doctor. “Alright, I’m listening…..”

Another monster that could be introduced in a Universal Monster-verse re-launch, would be the Mad Ghoul from the movie of the same name from 1943. Since it's Mayan gas that's used to create the Mad Ghoul, it could also perhaps serve as a tie-in with the Creature From the Black Lagoon. And maybe even serve as a sort of precursor to Romero's Night of the Living Dead franchise.

I had some great exceptions for this franchise, if I had it my way I would use the monsters; Frankenstein's monster, The Phantom of the Opera, The Gillman, The Wolfman, Van Helsing, and The Invisible Man as team of anti heroes that would take down the big bads such as Dracula and the Mummy. It would have themes of acceptances and some steampunk in the 19th century.

You have to drop two movies in one year that’s how you do it and think like this All Directed by : Denis Villeneuve Ironman (rich creator) Frankenstein Paul Dano as Frankenstein Javier Bardem as The Monster Hulk (Beast/ Transformer) Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde Jake Gyllenhaal as Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde Captain America (man outta time) Vampire Oscar Isaac as Dracula Thor (mythological man) Mummy Babs Olusanmokun as The Mummy And what holds it all together is Nick Fury aka Thanos aka Van Helsing by Ryan Gosling Plus+ Black Widow (duh) Bride of Frankenstein

My vote is make a Dracula movie and a Frankenstein movie to set up the complete families. Dracula, Zaleska, Alucard, Victor/Henry Frankenstein, Wolf Frankenstein, and Ludwig Frankenstein. At that point you have six major characters with their own independent motivations set up to use in future films.
