Let's Replay X-COM UFO Defence #21: Coverage, Coverage, Coverage

As the aliens increase their levels of activity across the globe, so too does X-COM. Unlike the aliens however, our bases are hindered by build time and the costs incurred in both the building and the maintenance of said underground facilities. That’s not to say that the aliens base pop out of nowhere; they have to send specific missions to Earth to set up bases and so, you can stop them from doing this if you detect the UFOs. That detection is only possible if you have radar coverage, which means detection bases like the ones I’ve built in Europe and Asia. While you can in theory use the incerceptors and skyrangers to detect UFOs, doing so is sporadic at best and puts you at risk of not having enough fuel in those craft when you really need them.
If you don’t want to get overwhelmed after the first few months, you really need to start building bases to increase your radar coverage, ideally so that you have most of the world within your sphere of influence. The three bases I have set up are a good start, but we still have more of the world to cover. We could do that by building even more bases, but there’s another method that we’ve yet to research that not only increases our detection radius but also makes said detection intimately more effective. In time we’ll get this capability but not yet.

Unlike terror missions, crashed UFOs take at least several days to disappear (and there's no consequence for letting them disappear other than not running a mission), so technically you can wait and make sure the mission is at daytime. Still, if you want to run night time missions, be my guest.

And once again, Barry seems to refuse to do his duty and scout, get killed and get cloned, repeat. Nope, instead he decided to not only repeat the attempt of the Barry of the second attempt by staying alive, he decided to become Commander, of all things. I have no idea of that's a good thing or a bad thing, given that "Mass cloning of Barry" is what people almost expect.

gimok2k5 my first commander went with a group of 5 into the large battleship and got blaster launched, heavy armor wasn't heavy enough. With flying suites you can shoot at the roof and enter from there. Pop in with a rookie.

I'm kinda sad that you just rushed ahead with the tank, and didn't send the soldiers to gain some TUs by doing the cardio in the desert. BTW it really is funny that the only way for the soldiers to get their cardio is to run around in the desert.

On the bright side, destroyed power sources mean the possibility of dead aliens. If you're real lucky with the smaller craft, you can get an instant mission win. Free points and bits of scrap in that case.

As large as the numbers on laser cannon are, I think the profit is greater on pistol. If I remember right the price for selling a laser pistol is more than twice the cost of building one while the price for selling a laser cannon is only around 1 and a half times the creation cost.

Not exact numbers, only to demonstrate the principle: It's better to sell something worth a million bucks at a 10% gain, than something worth ten thousand at a 300% gain. The percents are bigger for the latter but pure numerical values are much better for the former. Also, laser cannons are really fast to build. In terms of income per engineer workhour, they have everything else beat.

The craft laser has the better return value per engineer hour spent on it compared to the laser pistol. Both items take 300 engineer hours to complete.
