I love this game. History civ is incredibly boring and constantly retreads the same boring subject matter. This was new and exciting. I constantly hear people complaining about the lack of identity but so many of the leaders in this game are fun to just be around. Coslov the Russian leader is everyone's favorite punching bag. The Korean leader is practically a James bond villain. Norway's leader and his very small wet suit. The Europeans and their constant diplomatic squabbles. Diplomacy was so much fun because each sponsor can go a number of different ways. Peaceful, war monger and a number of different affinities. Cyber Africans, Alien hybrid brits the skys the limit. Even the aliens have more depth than bandits. You can chose to coexist, kill or even ignore them. The planets are gorgeous, the units look good, the floating cities are amazing. So many people want to compare it to alpha centari or history civ. Not every game is for every one. Beyond earth should be allowed to stand on its own merits. It may not be a flawless master piece, but it has so much charm and wonder that history Civ can not achieve. It also allows you to keep your culture and evolve it more organically than civ 7 allows.

One of my all time favorite Sid games and reminding me of ALPHA CENTAURI. It is the one Sid game i always keep installed compared to the historical Civ games which i eventually get tired of with CIVILIZATION II having been my favorite which felt so alive back in the day. Its too bad they decided to do STARSHIPS as a separate game with a clumsy way of fusing it to BEYOND EARTH instead of including it as part of the original game from the get go. I also love STAR SHIPS for its tabletop style simplicity while still being detailed enough to always be interesting and bombastic. Totally agree with the aliens having more depth. It was a real joy to be able to find ways to not kill them off and instead coexist on the planet with them. That definitely gave a classical STAR TREK, BABYLON 5 kind of vibe about war and peace.

Civ 7, a game that isn't out yet. Like you just mentioned new and exciting and Civ 7 is trying to mix things up and people aren't willing to give it a fair shot. Instead, they're comparing existing games without waiting to see a more finalized product and give it a shot.

I'm so glad you're playing this again, I just started playing again last night. In terms of terrestrial games taking place on a single planet, there are so many historical 4Xes out there (I mean look there are 7 Civilization games alone lol), but not too much in the way of sci fi. I'm having a lot of fun and appreciating the creative effort put into all the creatures, terrain, and technologies. I do see the flaws people talk about in terms of the factions and leaders not being very interesting lore-wise, I feel like they should have put a lot more effort in that regard. You don't have that problem with Civ obviously since people already have their own knowledge and opinions about historical leaders. It's a far shot but I hope more streamers go back to this game and make another push for people to play it again.

The thing that chased me away there was a satelitte heavy bug, and sats were pretty important. I have created a thread on steam, and years later poeple were still replying its still there...

Having both 'The Social Engineering - A Culture and Virtue Overhaul' and 'Affinity As Yields' mods enabled take the gameplay and storytelling of Beyond Earth to the next level. It is a shame you cannot play Multiplayer with Mods.

Maybe I'll restart with those?
@HappyModder872 ай бұрын
@@explorminate I'd be interested to hear what you guys thought of them for sure. If you were to try a playthrough of them, I would also use the 'Max Increase Sponsors' mod to play with 12 sponsors in order to maximize the political intrigue and 'By Land and Sea' by the same Author of 'Social Engineering' to add ocean colonies. And since I am mentioning mods, it is also worth looking into the 'Awesome' series of mods and the 'CODEX' mod, but I do not personally play those as much.

I loved this game and I miss it. Gotta come back to it. I bounced off of Civ6, time to revisit BE.
@anthonythompson6053Ай бұрын
While I got why people didn't like it (and agree with most of their points), I still like BE and go back to it now and again. I think that all this game needed to really be something was proper support. Civ 5 and 6 weren't my go-to games until the DLCs, and BE has great bones to build upon as a bunch of the mods out there demonstrate. Not to say I get bored with the "historical" civ games either, like some people I guess. I love all my civ babies and think they all offer something to the genre, they just need proper development and support to really stand out as something interesting.

What other options do we have for this specific sub-genre of 4X colonizing of alien worlds? Last I checked, the list is pretty damn short. So while I expect some criticism, which there was much of back then, it must be weighed against our options. This is a solid game, still have it installed and come back to it regularly.

I could be mistaken, but I think it gives more recommendations on the lowest difficulty setting. That or there might be an option for advice in the settings.

This is in my opinion the best Civ game and it's truly a shame it was dropped. Though it doesn't hold a candle compared to the narrative of SMAC.

It was the way they promoted it. Graphically underwhelming, lackluster diplomatic options, nothing compared to Alpha Centauru which it was supposed to be its successor. I tried to get back into it as well. Only with mods did it feel better.

The game is decent; I played it a lot with some large mods. However, it has a lot of issues. First, it is very finicky, and you'll see on Steam that many people can't run it. Second, the AI is completely braindead, perhaps on par with the worst Civ AI ever made. Additionally, there are a few things like the very strange diplomatic system.

Go play alpha centauri a bit and remind yourself what we wanted vs what we got, lack of unit customization, lack of variety of units, the game felt simplified because it was, etc... Don't get me wrong, I dumped over 100 hours into that game but none of the charm of the alpha centauri factions crossed over. So it became a good game to play a couple times and be done with, but that's not why people play civilization games and it wasn't why we played alpha centauri, it was because they have a charm that keeps you coming back for 100's of hours. Also, i think this might have drawn in quite a few people that hadn't played the civ games in awhile and the game mechanics changed between 4 and 5 I think, where we went from squares to hexes and the meta with squares was something like 4 infantry 2 artillery or whatever other random units you wanted to toss in there and there was an or der of battle that executed so it made sense to do things this way, but they kind of tossed that complexity out when they switched to hexes, and if you bring in a person that played alpha centauri that expects to hand craft his Drop shock AAA infantry units to guard his unarmored artillery, there is likely to be some issues.
@anubjin2 ай бұрын
We have so high standards nowadays, 100 hours is massive. I wish I poured 100h into all my games quite frankly most 4X games I buy are way below 50h. The last time I genuinely enjoyed playing a new 4X was Interstellar Genesis, with 90h. Most of my games linger around 20-30h, they just get boring quickly. Maybe that's not your impression, but games I can play for 100h+ are already very good games in my eyes. Looking at my steam library I have 21 games with more than 100h, and that's with a 400 games library. I consider all of these games great games I would recommend to anyone.
@grazzitdvram2 ай бұрын
@@anubjin I hear what you're saying and honestly I've mostly quit playing 4x games entirely in favor of paradox games like Stellaris, CK3, EUIV, etc... so I'm not the best to really talk about this subject because a play thru of one of these games can take 100 hours depending upon how addicted you are to pausing and how often you hit max speed.
