One of the biggest problems with Civ-Beyond Earth is that everyone was expecting this title to be the successor of Civ-Alpha Centauri instead of allowing it to exist, live and grow into its own self. Beyond Earth had a very different game play and dynamic which people lost sight of. I honestly thought it had gotten a bad wrap for all these years and I'm glad people have decided to give it another look again. Thanks for this Jumbo. Just reminded me how much I still love this gave. Gonna have a game right now....

Oh, come on, it was a Civ 5 Mod. A bland one, too, with an ugly color palette and not much else, sold for a full price at release. And the sycophantic reviewers gushing over it for no reason didn't help things, either. And no, arranging the tech tree in the form of a web instead of a flowchart isn't refreshing or groundbreaking. Rising Tide, though? It shook things up quite a bit and was a very good step in the right direction. Too bad they dropped the title right when they started to do good things with it, probably because the reception was (rightfully) bad. If only they did Rising Tide's content BEFORE releasing the original game as it was we would actually have something unique by now.

I agree with you. I recently tried to play Alpha Centauri again and the rose colored glasses came off. The game felt empty, not much diversity (worms, worms, big or small, meh) in experience. While it had a decent story for all the factions, that just wasn't enough. What CIV: BE:RT gives is much more immersive, each search comes across new things, the quests add goals, the artifacts make for interesting decisions. While I don't like the 'health' system or struggle with affinity, this beats old AC by a mile.

I think it's a great game, and I play it still. (With many mods though.) It just captures the planet colonization feeling very well. In the beginning, you are scared of every little alien unit, all who could destroy your every soldier, trade unit and settler. Never mind if you happen upon a Siege worm or a Kraken! But in the end game, you have tamed/become one with the planet and just roll over it with your huge ultimate units. And the lore! The civiliopedia in the regular games is stuffed, but here it is not something they just could have taken off Wikipedia. These stories, the quotes (my favourite being about the alien life form not being able to speak French), the tech, the buildings, the history, everything makes you feel emersed in a huge world where important things really are at stake, but where you also at the same time can shape it and play a part in it. The intro cinematics give me goosebumps each time... Sure, it has its flaws, as every game. But overall, now I just want to sit down again and land my colony shuttle, start building that ultrasonic fence and send out the explores to hopefully not get killed by miasma. :)

@therexbellator2 жыл бұрын
@@Smenkhaare Nobody cares. Your opinion is irrelevant to the discussion which is about BE. That said your opinion is representative of a tiny (tiiiny 🤏) minority. Fact is Civ has *always* been cartoony and whimsical. Civ 5 was the only game in the franchise that changed its art style making it the outlier. Go back and look at Civs 1-4, before VI, IV was the most cartoony Civ and prior to that III was pretty goofy looking as well. Civs 1 and 2 lacked graphical detail but they made up for it with silly Elvises, citizens on parade, classical era newspaper headlines, and Civ II's hilarious council videos (including the aforementioned Elvis). Civ has never taken itself seriously and its art style has always reflected that. Civ V's artistic style was more of an accident than an attempt to make Civ "current" with realistic graphics. It's always possible that Firaxis may return to that style but they don't have to either because at the end of the day we play Civ for the gameplay not for graphics and that's why VI is 1000x superior to the Jon Shafer abortion that took Ed Beach two expansions to make playable.

I really enjoyed Beyond Earth when it released. I used to Marathon Civ 5 then go into Beyond Earth. The one thing I didn’t like was the small number of sci-fi factions, if I played as Rome in Civ 5 there was no obvious faction I could imagine going into Beyond Earth as. Strangely enough when I first played Humankind I thought some of the ideas from BE could work well if the Humankind franchise ever does a spin-off like this. The affinity system from BE seems like something Humankind could build on it’s empire customize. Humankind’s changing avatars could also be interesting, rather than changing clothing based on culture it could become more pronounced cybernetic if you go down the supremacy route.

I wonder if they might make a “Civ BE 2” as we wait for Civ7. I also wonder if there’s an overview of the factions? They weren’t as natural to remember as the faction ideologies and leader personalities as Alpha Centauri, but they still put an effort there.

2014/2015 was the year of two of my most favourite games Civ BE and Anno 2205. Both of them sit in the premise of a futuristic outlook with space exploration in a sci fi tech background. Both of them also didn't got a lot of attention back in the day, being considered average games. But I really love that setting and today I still play both.
@gaffgarion70492 жыл бұрын
I think one of the biggest problems was that the affinities relation to technology was the opposite of how it should have worked. They civs have no distinct personalities because the affinities we're supposed to shape their personality. But none of the factions become distinct in any path until late game. You can use buildings and techs that are meant for one affinity,(why do Purity/Harmony get benefits from a cyborg factory?) Later Techs should have been locked behind affinity levels and affinity developed purely through decisions and actions. This would make the differences more distinct early on. Which in turn would railroad the ai on a certain path earlier, giving them more coherent personalities.
@madensmith7014 Жыл бұрын
They are trying to make hybrid affinities possible, as seen with the upgrades for faction specific units. Other than that, the buildings play all the same whatever route you choose as long as you have the tech.

I enjoyed Beyond Earth/ Rising Tide a bunch and regarded it at least as good as Civ 5 and after abandoning Civ6 still remember it fondly. I did not play Alpha Centauri so, I can't compare. But BE/ RT checked ALL of the boxes for me and, strangely, I might consider it the apotheosis of the Civ franchise. Also, I think some of the sentiment about AC may be sour grapes driven by the departure of Brian Reynolds from Firaxis such that he never made a remake of the game. Glad you came back to it; I may too. Enjoy!

Civilization games based on the historical past are certainly fun but I've always wanted a civilization type game where you explore other planets and sadly there aren't very many. Alpha Centauri was one of the first and I loved it but I always wished they would make another one with better graphics and they did and that was Beyond Earth. I only wish they had followed up with more expansions or a sequel but let's face it the big money is in civilization games based on Earth's History anything beyond that is less profitable but I wouldn't certainly pay top dollar for it.

i have played this game for over 1400hr............ yes, it is a sid meier's game. so what do you expect, it was next generation from alpha centori, (that took a long time for me to appreciate), but beyond earth got me to think of strategy in a different ways, you not only had other colonies settling around you, from earth, but you also had to deal with bugs that had a habit of getting in your way. that cant be done until 3/4 of the way through the game, when you can either train them or put them into special parks. at which point you get uglier and uglier bugs to defend you, and that's when you have found the sweet spot of the game, and then go in for the kill, that's when the game shows its true colours........

Great overview and I couldn't have said it better myself JumboPixel. I'm really hoping that the next Firaxis 4X strategy game is Beyond Earth 2 not Civ VII (I'm still plodding away at VI and am in no hurry for a successor). Beyond Earth's biggest (but not sole) weakness is its lack of character from the leaders and its tech quotes. It tries to ape Alpha Centauri's portentousness with tech quotes remarking on philosophical or scientific concepts but the writing was weak, which is not to say I was one expecting it to be SMAC2 (I wasn't) but even on its own this aspect of the game's presentation was lacking. Also the leaders lacked personality which was probably a consequence of the affinity system and how any of them could adapt any affinity rather than pursuing one. Civilization, as a game, has history on its side to tell its narrative but a 4x game like BE can't fall back on a history that doesn't exist, therefore the characters and lore need to shine, something BE lacked. Hopefully Firaxis devs are taking note and will address this in a future game.

I heard someone once describe the legendary heroes of might and magic iii as a game where you have to beat another players op bs strategy with your own op bs strategy and that way it is balanced. I think civ be could have done that too. Make each affinity strong and weak against another, have purity cover the land (not sea) in terraforming (perhaps adjacent terraforming reduce upkeep, adjacent miasma increase it), harmony gets attack buffs and mire resources from (customisable?) miasma and unimproved resources, and supremacy covers the world in nodes and tries to max out energy production (rather than production production) and fights using shear numbers. I feel if you look for it these themes were here' but they weren't perfectly executed or done to the extreme i think they should have. I love the setting, they needed to lean into it more.

Harmony + Purity : Wizards from the Harry Potter franchise(You like fantasy stuffs but still wanted to stay in human form) 4. Supremacy + Purity : Settlement Defense Front from Call of Duty Infinite Warfare(We must reconquer the Earth with technologies and ultranationalist ideology or we rescue the humans on Earth by inviting them conquering the Alien Planet ) 6. Purity : Settlement Defense Front from Call of Duty Infinite Warfare(We stay truthful to the old Earth Civilisations, and spread it to the Alien Planet.) When it first came out, I was very disappointed in Beyond Earth. Yet, compared to what they did with Civ 6 -- the cartoonish style, the catch-all district mechanic, not to mention the AI and the whole imbalance in the game -- Beyond Earth does some fundamentals right. Nevertheless, it could have been a better game if they tried to make the civilizations/factions more distinctive and improved the technology tree -- and of course how it connected with the alien strategic resources. I never warmed up to that mechanic. I always felt that it did not give the player any meaningful choice. You picked whatever was available in your region. Considering how important these strategic resources were for your science/technology choices, not to mention the narrative of the whole campaign, this limited the gameplay and made for a bland game. At the end of the day, I feel they were influenced more by Pandora: First Contact (a not very well known game with limiting gameplay mechanics) than Alpha Centauri, although they paid tribute to the latter for marketing purposes. As many others, I would have loved a new Alpha Centauri game with updated mechanics and new graphics. I guess we will have to wait for that.

My son and I are playing Beyond Earth and the biggest thing I've noticed is that it is still a truly "beta" product. It is lacking crucial basic bug fixes and features. For example, if you research a bunch of techs that give you Harmony affinity and reach a point where your units heal on tiles with "miasma" - which normally harms units - when you set your workers on auto they still automatically clear miasma, even though it is now beneficial, and there is no way to turn off having them clear miasma unless you go 100% manual. Another pain is that from the beginning the game's equivalent of barbarians - native creatures - start out with some units being end-game level strength and if you accidentally reveal them on a tile they will close the gap with your unit between turns and destroy it like a Death Robot attacking a beginning level warrior. Which is maddening. Also, I'm almost done with my second playthrough and none of the names in the game are useful or intuitive. Every object is like an object from Civ 5 but it's as if someone used a random letter generator to come up with random names that are meaningless. Not factions, leaders, unit names, buildings, wonders nor improvements have meaningful or intuitive names.

The biggest problem with Beyond Earth IMO was the fact that it is too easy. I'm possibly the worst Civ player of my circle of friends, but even I could cruise through BE as the AI simply doesn't build up their area properly and pisses off the aliens so that they wont get their base set up. Also building defences seems to be useless as an army can take over bases in just one turn in my experience.

I think I'd rather play another round of Alpha Centauri.

The game without DLC it feels like an extreme stall. Nothing happens, no progression. You build some cities at the beginning and then try to clean up the worms. You research things all the time but no technology brings any change. You build these sattelites which are nice. but they also don't really do much. I played two games, the second one for 10h. I was unable to distinguish hour two from hour ten.

I think they should have made the civ leaders famous Sci-Fi writers.
