Yes, I am aware of the audio problems with the intro, which is why I have the annotation at the start to warn people to lower their volume. KZbin won't let me fix audio issues in post, so unfortunately this is the best I can do to fix it. I'm really sorry if it caused some unpleasantness with the audio spike. :/. This is an older video where I forgot to balance the audio on the intro, which was edited together separately and has a different audio levels to everything else. My newer videos have less of these problems since I learned from it, so maybe check those out instead :)

You can actually do different attacks (not just Stinger and the default combo), it took me ages to figure out, but by holding the movement direction in different directions (Towards the enemy, or to the left or right) you could do entirely different combos. However, that being said, it never felt even close to the tight control a master has in any other DMC game.

Foxcade 85% of people do not have annotations turned on and for those of us who watch via smartphones/mobile annotations aren't even an option for us, we can't turn them on or off or even see them anyway. So ìncluding a little annotation in the beginning doesn't do anything for anyone and not fixing the awful clipping in post is just fucked up. Yo, a few years late to respond now but. I always thought that Dante did that double sided coin thing because even though he always made is sound like he didn't care as long as he got his money, like in the manga for dmc where all he did was kill for money and the money didn't make him happy, he pretended it did. So, i think that the double sided coin thing was created for the reason to fight the demons without a reason. Like in the anime Where a few clients don't have enough money to pay for his services so he does it anyway, or for some odd reason that it "peaked his interest". That way the people he's helping out think that a miracle is upon them or that they just have very good luck that Dante helped them out. After all, What else does Dante have better to do besides go back to an empty shop with no one in it. The only times you ever see him happy is when his friends are around or he's fighting demons.
@FindingsOfAnArmouredMind5 жыл бұрын
I always interpreted it like he did care about people's problems but didn't want others to know since that would make him look weak (put DMC3's ending for example, where he pretends it was raining, when we both know he was actually crying for Vergil). So he uses the double sided coin to hide his true emotions. The double coin thing has made appeaeances in other series, mangas and animes, put Crow from Deadman Wonderland's manga for example, at first he is shown as a very serious and don'tgiveaflyingfuck sort of person, all the time he uses a double sided coin to determine his "fate". Then, as the manga goes, we learn that he wasn't the manly guy he pretended to be but a very humble, caring and even shy individual.
@FindingsOfAnArmouredMind4 жыл бұрын
Just replayed DMC2 recently and there's a subtle line from Lucia that can support my interpretarion. When Lucia realizes that Dante's lucky coin is one sided, she responds "That macho...", which kinda implies Dante was doing the whole coin thing to hide his more emotional side.

I know this is late, but the significance of the coin flip was to keep up his 'Sardonic and sarcastic facade.' The coin is a double sided head coin, he of course wanted to help in this story. But he still enjoyed giving them a good 'scare' by trolling them with a coin toss (That is always set to be 'Heads, the noble choice.') Dante is still cocky in this, but in a much more subtle way, and not once does he brood. STOIC, yes, but never brooding. The guy is literally wearing a Smug Smirk in every piece of footage you show. He wears that for 80% of the game. Alas you are right, his reason for being here isn't exactly a good story for a Main character in a game. One, Dante is so powerful at this point, that this whole game is just a darn "Side Mission" for him. This Dante plays an excellent Foil or 'Crazy Strong Supporting' character like in SMT Nocturne. It's as if Lucia is the Main character, and her story can be viewed through the eyes of Dante who has no personal stake in this other than Lucia's adoptive mother Knew Sparda, and it's kinda his JOB to hunt Devils too great for even Ancient Devil Hunters. I still enjoy this Dante, because it shows what he has become over a long life of INTERNAL brooding. Because legit, when things are calm, the guy is kinda Depressed and wears a goofy mask all his life to appear as though he doesn't care. DMC2 was rushed, and is by no means perfect or anything GOOD. But I still love this Dante, the game still plays well enough for me to enjoy it, and his best one liner IS in this game. lol

Foxcade I know it's been 8 months since I posted this comment, but since I'm going through your DMC videos again I feel the neef to elaborate on it a bit. I like the ending of DMC2 a lot because in retrospective... it ads a lot to Dante's character. Despite his crazy and upbeat attitude throughout the series, he's a tragic character. Dante and Vergil are sons of a demon and a human which makes them outcasts. His mother got killed when he was a kid, and brothers got separated. When they finally meet again, one of them becomes trapped in Hell itself. Years later Dante meets his brother again but he didn't realise that until he kills Nelo Angelo. Years after that he meets Nero and entrusts him Yamato, but decided not to get into Nero's life. And ultimately he gets trapped in Hell to fight demons until his last breath, to never return again... But the world still has Nero, Lady, Trish and Lucia to watch over humans, so Dante's sacrifice was not in vain. That's why I like the ending so much, even tho the game itself... stinks. Probably no one will see this comment, but now I feel good about expressing my thoughts.

This game is due for such a heavy overhaul a la REmake 2, which it wouldn't need too much changing. The ideas are there; they're just... lacking. Improve combat, improve enemy AI, increase the amount of enemies in the areas, cut down the areas a bit (or add more to do), redesign some of the bosses (e.g.: Helicopter boss. What if it shapeshifted like the building demon and gained the ability to use its helicopter blade as a glaive or it "consuming" a tank and gaining its firepower. Add more rooftop shenanigans of literally fighting over the entire city ending in him taking that glaive as a new weapon --speaking of...), more weapon variety (different swords does not equate "more weapons"; take the Glaive, for instance, from the redesigned boss, then give the wolf-hedge-demon knight a lance or spear that can use the wolves' souls as a living bulwark; just a couple examples --hell, give us a ball-and-chain weapon), and, most importantly, FLESH OUT THE CHARACTERS AND STORY. The whole thing screams, "patchwork" --which, given its development, is no surprise. I didn't hate DMC2. Gods, I wish I did. It would have made things SOOO much simpler, but I believe it has a chance to be a badass entry in the DMC series with just a bit of TLC.

These are good points but the one about the sword not having any combos. You can do something besides the triple slash. I believe it had something to do with pressing forward or backward during combos at a certain point. Not sure. You can do more than the triple slash but even then there is very little to the combo variety, which isn't help by the lack of unlocking new techniques like in all the other games, so you inevitably just do the triple slash because sadly there isn't much point in trying to do anything else.

The coin flipping thing they gave Dante in this game is, I think, his version of the trope where the roguish anti-hero actually has a good heart, but doesn't want to let that on to everyone, either for the sake of humility, or just not seeming like a boy scout. It's the same dynamic with Han Solo, The Man with no name, or pretty much any wandering Ronin in a samurai movie. Dante can be defensive about revealing his nice guy nature to people, and puts on airs of being aloof a lot of the time. Remember in DMC3, when he cried at the end after believing Vergil was gone forever? Lady comments on it, but he has to save face by telling her "it's just the rain".

This game had plenty of issues, most of which you covered very well. There were, however, a few things I enjoyed, nevertheless. First, while it isn't as good as other DMC games, the music for DMC 2 does have enough atmospheric qualities for some tracks and enough heart-pumping rock that I still listen to it years later. I'm a writer who gets a lot of inspiration from music, and a number of DMC 2 tracks have really helped me get into the right mindset to put a scene or setting together. Second, while most of the enemies were bland, I _loved_ the demon tanks and demon helicopters, if only for the concept. There was just something about seeing those vehicles covered with twisted, organic tissue that made me go, "Ah, _coooooooool!_" when I first saw them. Honestly, it's an idea that would be great for a horror movie. Okay, technically, _Maximum Overdrive_ did have possessed vehicles, but the vehicles and machines, but none of them had fleshy bits on them, and the movie was... well, it was a Steven King movie made in the eighties. What more can you say about that? My point, however, is that DMC 2 had at least one really great enemy concept with the demon tanks and demon helicopters and I still get a kick out of them. Third, while it wasn't executed very well, the whole thing with the demon world slowly infecting the regular world was pretty solid, in my opinion. It was like the world was getting infected more than invaded, and I liked that a lot. Honestly, I feel like between that and the demon vehicles, they had some really good ideas they could have done a lot with, if they'd just put a bit more effort into it. What may have made for a more interesting game would be having Dante find out that someone is opening up small rifts to the demon world. The rifts warp everything around them, like a wound getting infected. What's more, whoever is behind it has found away to enable demons to possess machines. Instead of only having a few enemies that are a fusion of demon and technology, _all_ of the enemies, or at least most of them, could have been like that. In order to stop the demon infection from spreading, Dante has to locate the rifts and close them, defeating the boss demons that protect them. As for his motivation, Dante doesn't need that much of one to fight demons. Instead, the demons could have provoked him by attacking him in a preemptive strike. They know he's a serious threat to them and want to make sure he's out of the picture. Seeing that they're not going to leave him alone, and not wanting to see the world be overrun with demons, Dante takes up his trusty sword and guns and heads out to save the day. Simple, but that's still reason enough for him to be involved. Okay, so this was kind of a long comment, but I'm not one for making short ones, anyway. In conclusion, DMC 2 was very flawed but what frustrates me most is how simple it would have been to fix the story, at the very least. There were a few gold nuggets of ideas in there, so it's a shame that they were covered up by so much crap.

Devil May Cry 2 was the first game in the series that I played. I really liked it, until I saw the first one. Despite this, the game still has a place in my heart. I still have the silly hope that they will remake him, perhaps giving it a work closer to what was made in DMC V, especially in the development of the characters and story.

Honestly, I didn't mind the whole coin-flip aspect of the story. In fact, it was one of the aspects of the story I actually liked. It's always implied in the other DMC games that Dante cares about others a lot more than he is willing to admit to them. There are various reasons why this could be, but the point is the same. He's doing the coin flip so that people he helps won't know that he was always planning on helping them. Of all the things DMC2 did that made Dante's character bad, this was one of the only things that I felt was genuinely really interesting about him.

Only just found your channel this week and I'd like to say I'm enjoying these Retrospective videos. More on point with this video, I do agree with why this game got the bad response it did. So it's probably a good thing that 2 was the first one I played in the series, and I did enjoy it then, looking back I can see it falls into the category of "Without the franchise name, it might have been a good game."

One saving grace this game has is that there actually IS a combo system that lets you do different moves. Instead of pausing between attacks, it's based on whether or not you're pressing on the analog stick. It's pretty weird to pick up on, but you can start a combo by not holding the analog stick, which is a four-hit string, and then pressing in a direction (any direction, doesn't matter which) will execute a different type of combo depending on what hit in the four-hit combo you're currently on. It's not perfect, but it spices things up a bit. It's kind of nice, since it kind of makes you think about what attack would let you best handle the enemies around you without getting hit, especially if you're going for an S. Devil trigger comes with its own combos too. Also, on higher difficulties, the game also requires a bit more thought. Of course, you probably already heard of this at some point by now, but if you hadn't, it's something to think about.

Dante with the coin is a troll, which is exactly what Dante's personality is. Dante is a hero but he always shows off a tough exterior but hides the fact that he is a softie, even DMC3 showed thisbaspect of his personality heavily.

Watching this 6 years later and the characterof Zod has been thrown in the mix in The Flash, just like good ol phantom without his original purpose or character. But I feel that without the fall of 2 we would never get the rise of 3

Firstly, good video, loved it... Secondly (and my big comment)... Probably like a number of hardcore DMC fans after DMC5 was announced I went back and played each one again, including two. Even going into two I had this vague memory of being 16 years old and thinking it was going to be super sick, beating it, but then the rest was replaced by other people going "oh the game is a trash-fire". After I went back to play it, I mean, those people weren't wrong, but I DID look at the entire game as a series of "what if" scenarios rather than a total failure. It does bother me that there truly is a game in DMC2 that was screaming to be made, but lack of planning and rush to finish ideas failed it.... Oddly enough if Capcom (I super know this is never going to happen) EVER decided to remake DMC2 in the RE Engine and give it a proper reboot as it intended to I truly think it would be good. I think fans would look at the original as the blueprint that it clearly was.

"[...]there's no diversity in the combo strings you can do. In the previous game [...] the combos could be varied by adding slight pauses between button presses". *montage of the same combo string used over and over again* Erm...actually DMC2 has MORE combo strings than Alastor and Ifrit combined. Heck, you even had different combo string in devil form AND you had combo string with the shotgun! The difference is that instead of using pauses you had to flick the stick. So instead of: -slash, slash, pause, slash you had to do: -slash, slash, flick stick, slash
@TioMegamanX6 жыл бұрын
There were more "varied" combos but it wasn't bound to button pauses, it was bound to button + directional inputs.

I know people have probably already talked about this but DMC2 has multiple combos. You gotta press directions during certain attacks but it's just harder and more annoying to do, and the game itself doesn't even tell you about it. I'm really happy they changed it back to delays
@RBNinja6 жыл бұрын
There actually were a number of different sword combos in DMC2 but they require to let go of the target button and do have different timed button presses. I'm not sure why they decided to make it so you couldn't do different sword combos while targeting enemies but thats another issue. But they are there.

You can actually pull of different combo moves using the directional button with the attack button like a fighting game, the problem is tho that you can only do the moves if you are not using the lock on mechanic making it pretty much useless. Learned that from the Sphere hunter channel (I believe that's the name)

Dispite all of its flaws I still liked it, the first was such a masterpiece I never expected the sequel to top it. The thing I didn’t like the most was the camera pulling back way too far in some particular fights because it made the game feel like it wasn’t a action/adventure game anymore. Also my standards weren’t as high back then because I was a lot younger
