I'm....one of the people who actually LIKES Nero...I don't understand the hate for him, he's not a "pathetic Dante clone" like people claim. Unlike Dante, Nero gets very emotional and rash. He DOES have a cocky, snarky attitude which is pretty much explained as possibly Vergil's son or reincarnation.
@SoysauceML6 жыл бұрын
Dante when showing off comes off as crazy awesome. Nero when showing comes off as adorably dorky. Biggest difference imo.
@KalvinEllis6 жыл бұрын
Well it's simple, if you're going to make a new character, just don't make him so similar to the old one. And what did Capcom do, they made their "new" character a cocky demon hunter with white hair, badass coat, guns and swords, who's just younger and cries more. I understand the need to have different characters for story and gameplay purposes, but don't make your new character a carbon copy of the old one. Look what's been going on in DMC5, Nero is once again the main star while Dante is once again reduced to a supporting role, and now he is old to boot. Nero has his own DMC agency now and apparently Dante's rivalry with Vergil will be handed over to him as well. Seems like there's a reoccurring pattern here. They clearly try to give fans this idea that Dante is "the past" while Nero is "the future", all the while they keep handing over Dante's story elements to Nero. Itsuno keeps pushing one of the most popular and likeable protagonists in gaming to the side by trying to make him more and more irrelevant in his own franchise, all so he can keep shoving his pet favorite down the fans' throats. Of course some people won't be happy about that.
@GhostCell476 жыл бұрын
Nero is a melodramatic try hard to be honest.
@TheSpiritsGuide26 жыл бұрын
You had me until the bit about DMC 5 -- a game where the full story hasn't been revealed to the public yet and most of the current gameplay focused on Nero for demonstration purposes. First, Nero having his own agency isn't far fetched considering that demon hunting seems lucrative enough to support a character in this universe. Second, Nero having a rivalry with Vergil -- if Vergil has been confirmed to be in the game at least -- makes sense considering it's been confirmed that he's Vergil's son, and Vergil has been one of the biggest villains in the series. It makes sense that Nero would have a conflict with him at some point, especially considering Vergil's first action upon seeing his son is to rip his damn arm off and disappear somewhere with it. Those factors mean that Itsuno isn't trying to "replace" or render Dante "irrelevant" at all -- he's been in the trailers with his own gameplay for a reason -- nor is it him proclaiming Nero is his "pet favorite" it's him using the players he has available to craft something interesting involving them.
@KalvinEllis6 жыл бұрын
They already mentioned DMC5 is a Nero story. They certainly seem to be trying to replace Dante when he shows up for 5 seconds at the end of 3 minute trailers and isn't officially announced to be playable until months after the game has been announced. Who's the one you've been seeing during the entire marketing process, Dante or Nero? Dante should be the first thing you see in any DMC trailer, when that doesn't happen, you can tell Capcom has different plans. Of course Nero was created with the idea to replace Dante and take over his activities, that's the entire point of a legacy character. So he is related to Vergil and has a personal issue with him, does that sound familiar? Now he is a professional demon hunter running a "mobile agency" called Devil May Cry, almost seems like they're trying to "update" old concepts of the franchise but with another character, who just happens to look and act in an almost identical fashion to the way the previous character does. Meanwhile what's been happening to that previous character since DMC4? He's now a secondary player in his own franchise, he no longer gets any character development, he's there to just spew cheesy one-liners and show off his newest devil arms, now he's turned into a middle-aged man who can no longer get the job done by himself, is missing in action and his demon-hunting agency and his biggest rivalry is handed over to someone else. What else do you call that except replacement? The fact that Dante is still featured as a playable character doesn't mean much when he's no longer the main focus. If I had to take a guess, Capcom still keeps him around in some capacity only because they could be afraid of fan backlash if they excluded him completely. For the record, Itsuno has said himself that Nero is his favorite character since he created him, so of course he's his pet favorite, that's been obvious for a decade. I would actually give the man credit for never pretending to be unbiased. At least he's honest about it.

from what i know, the game we got was 40% of what was intended, there was meant to be a plot twist where nero's love interest turns out to be a villain and after that we play dante going through the underworld trying to save nero. ugh that sounds like a much better game.
@JoJosDankAdventures5 жыл бұрын
Where did you learn about this? I've searched about the dev cycle. Dante was added in the game because of fucking backlash and it ruined the whole game's vision. The reason you backtrack with him is because they had no time to develop more missions of how much time Dante took to develop for

My main gripe is that they would have made a way better game had they just designed a separate campaign for Dante. Just as there is a Tanker and Shell saga, we needed two separate stories that connect. There's no reason they cant overlap. Imagine getting to the end of Nero's story, only to start with Dante's story to be unlocked. It could go all the way back before Dante arrives to kill The Saviour in the opening scene. Explain his motives for his actions and what he was doing. It would also make way more sense as he is a much harder character to play. But yeah there arent enough levels in the game. It feels cheap as you say. I read somewhere they had their dev time cut in half and just rushed to get it as finished as possible. There's also theories out there that Dante was meant to have different stages that revolved around a literal hell. Look at the names of the weapons he acquires - none of them have anything to do with the bosses he defeats. Pandora, Gilgamesh, Lucifer all sound rather demonic to me. And its indisputable that alternative graceful Nero would have been more interesting rather than two characters that act almost entirely the same. You could have been way more harsh with Kyirea. We have no reason to be invested in her as the audience. The devs couldnt even decide what kind of relationship they have ('Kyeria is a sister, best friend, and lover all in one' says offical sources - its like they couldn't be bothered to decide). All we see is Nero be emotional about her and that's supposed to be reason enough for us to care. Thats not a story or even a a character at all. Compare that to Lady in DMC3.
@Foxcade7 жыл бұрын
I've thought about how they could do the story better with making more content, and I think a cool thing would have been to do what they did in RE Revelations 2. Have two story lines that run parallel to each, only one is at a different time, and shows the aftermath of the other. So play one mission as Nero, then the same area as Dante, but a day earlier and revamp the level so that Dante changes it to how Nero found it. Capcom wouldn't have to spend much more than they did and it would have been a more interesting way of presenting the story. I've heard the dev time was cut too, but couldn't find any sources for this when I looked it up. I wish Dante did get those Hell levels, as it would have been more visually interesting than the levels in the game. Damn, I never really thought about it but ya, the names don't fit with the bosses at all, either name or design wise. Bariel is giant flaming centaur with a massive sword but his weapon is a backpack with a skull design that fires exploding laser daggers? I could have been more harsh about Kyrie but there is so little about her it that I didn't even want to waste my time, since everyone knows shes a bland nothing. She is so nothing I couldn't even get worked up about it. It is definitely weird though how Kyrie is written so vague so that she can fit all these different character archetypes at the same time. And yes, she doesn't compare to any other the other ladies in DMC, even Lucia.

This is the tiniest nitpick, but I would say that Blue Rose distinguishes itself decently well when compared to handguns featured previously in the series. It's charge shot acts very differently when compared to the ones used by Dante in DMC3/4. Dante's charge shots are really weird in that it's more like a short buff rather than a traditional charge shot which fits well with how Dante's combos work as this gives a damage boost while still allowing combo potential. This is unlike Nero's which is a single large blast that works as a great source of damage and a good combo ender as it can push an enemy away so you can deal with others, meaning that it's more of it's own move as opposed to an optimization tool. Take this with a grain of salt though since this is just me being overly pedantic and bothered by a very minor and pretty much correct point for most people.

I think this is a legit counter argument. Blue Rose does have its use and does distingushes itself quite a lot-

I think it's fair. I always kept Blue Rose charged up and only used it when I was not able to do anything else more like a combo finisher, like you say. Dante always spammed his guns but you never spammed shooting with Blue Rose because despite being a rapid missile animation, there was just no need to, and it fit better to charge it up while you were doing other things.

It's challenging for sure but also very rewarding when you get it right. Dante alone has so much depth, it's like where do you even start. Nero is also a lot of fun with his Devil Bringer. These two alone are extremely fun to play and powerful as all hell. And then there's the special edition which sadly doesn't add new lore but gives us three new cool characters. A correction: Nero's DT does have a period of full invulnerability, but only during the barrier when you activate it. That barrier can also be used for combo extension because it sends most enemies skyward. The downside of not having knockdown resistance after activation is a small price for an otherwise FAR better DT with proper meter management. Your reviews hit the general points well enough, but the gameplay on display is poor and detracts from what you say about several things. Most of the bosses aren't good, but DMC is one of few series where the repetition in its structure and gameplay isn't an inherent downside. Probably why they were able to release it half-finished and still be the best in the series to many. You also mention that you don't feel you're given enough time to learn Dante, but these games are made to be played long after the story for the sake of self-improvement. For a few reasons I'm not nearly top-level in 4 as Dante myself: mainly age, carpal tunnel and disliking 3 of the 6 weapons, but I absolutely mastered DMC3 as a kid and am at least as good as you can be without advanced tech like guard flying in 4. If it's not your gameplay I can admit I'm mistaken, but otherwise I don't think you went nearly deep enough on this one. Now I've gotta go replay the whole series.

Souvenir Alex to you. More than likely because of some issues you have with new Dante. I've played every game in the series and the last 2 are the most fun. I admit I hated New Dante going in but he's still a cocky badass just in a different way. The core of the is there so I'm good
@AJaydedArtist6 жыл бұрын
Souvenir Alex there was nothing average about it. It was a dmc hack and slash with less weapon options but just as much depth. I could play 3 full levels when fully upgraded and never use the same combo twice if I wanted to. That's depth

Dmc 4 makes total sense and Nero is likely to be like Dante and Vergil together because Nero is Vergil’s SON...so the have a lot of things in common

THANK YOU! FINALLY! Somebody who is talking about the "Backtracking" of Devil May Cry Series. I always hated that about those games. Not all of them are bad but man, I hate it when games rely on lazy backtracking.

I'm hoping DMC 5 will be a better game because it's been 10 years since 4. I'm totally new fan. I love the series. I'm happy we get 5 after the reboot.

Hasn't it ever occurred to anyone that DMC4 was released around the economy crash of 2008. A financial crash that changed everything, even in gaming. My theory is: due to the economy crash, AND the sudden popularity of shooters, like COD, CAPCOM probably decided to cash in on the simplistic nature of those games. And so, DMC4 held the players hand in order to appease COD-players.

A little detail some people didn't notice is that once you beat the game Dante got all his weapons from the campaign in the boss fight.
@zeroattentiongaming8205 жыл бұрын
He has them on higher difficulties. I find it odd that even on DMD the mission 1 fight still feels like a tutorial despite it though. As the second fight shows, all DMD Dante needs is RG and Gilgamesh to decimate you.

What we really need for DMC from now on is to just keep Kyrie somewhere where the baddies can't touch her, else we'll get DMC4 again.

You just said it yourself, the ridiculous expectations that fans set up for themselves ends up ruining so many people's experiences with the game in the end. I don't let these kinds of things ruin experiences for me and just go into things with as little expectation as seems warranted.

Agree with so much of this. It also seems like when they did change it to be nero, dante being more of an after thought of a playable character, then when they did make him into a playable character, it was likely that he would of had posses he had to face himself instead of being forced to fight the same enemies nero did. Or at least it is what it feels like since dante's devil arms are thrown in when it might of been that dante was going to face new demons, nero actually of killed his instead of them escaping. so it is what DMC 5 actually did, at least with the revival of one of the dmc4 weapons, gilgamesh

I frickin love DMC4, but that’s because it was my first DMC game since I was an Xbox gamer growing up. I instantly fell in love and finally scratched the itch that Ninja Gaiden left me. Of course over time I went back and played DMC 1-3. Now? I still love DMC4 but I can definitely see the issues once I played DMC3. My gosh that game is incredible. Either way...I love this series so much and I’m so happy DMC5 just happened.

In hindsight, DMC4's ending was the saddest. Mainly because of what came next, and the lost opportunities for a continuation of this story.
