What is the BEST Pocket Hole Jig … Massca or Kreg? They seemed equal, until I discovered these 2 features! Once you know how to use a pocket hole jig, pocket holes are a great joinery system for a lot of woodworking DIY projects. With the right jig they can be so easy!
The two main features I love in the Massca M1 and M2 PRO are the all aluminum construction and the T-track connector built into the base. The M2 Pro adds in the metal material supports and stop blocks that don't bend or crack like cheap plastic and I think this thing is amazing. Finally, dust collection that stays attached and doesn't leak, you can't go wrong with this pocket hole system.
Hunts Workshop is dedicated to creating Woodworking tool reviews you can trust. Please, let me know what you think! This is not intended to be biased one way or the other. PROS and CONS to either pocket hole system in my opinion.
This is NOT a sponsored video, but I have received products from both companies in the past.

I've used the Masca for about 2 years (never owned the Kreg system)... I am so loving my Masca pocket hole jig. Two things to be aware of: 1. Using the dust collection improves GREATLY the quality of the pocket hole aka minimal, if any, tear out 2. After hundreds if not a thousand or more pocket holes the collar on the drill bit has worn down a bit by repeatedly hitting the bushing... I would much rather replace the collar and I have learned how to make adjustments for the wear. I did buy 2 Kreg pocket hole clamps (ouch $49 each)! Masca's customer service was fantastic--during the pandemic there were supply chain issues in getting my order to me. Masca was VERY upfront about when my jig was going to be shipped. Actually sent me a picture of the truck that it shipped out on with MANY others... probably 200 or more. There is an after market "holder" that you can purchase to keep all the bits and pieces in... full disclosure I work out of my garage I am not traveling to different job sites so keeping track of the pieces is not a big deal...I kept the original box (small piece problem solved). I can't speak to the Kreg side of things but you sir did and extremely fair assessment of Masca pocket hole jig. Nicely done!

The kreg 720 pro has wings to balance the piece you put in it. Also has slots to hold down with a clamp. Also has automatic depth adjustment.

Thanks for the precise review. I have the K-4 now and have been looking at the Massca. I've never been satified with the Kreg. Reason(s) 1. plastic - One would think the construction with plastic would keep cost down - wrong. 2. ease of use, I had to secure the Kreg to a plywood base and your right, it does take up quite a bit of room on the bench. 3. your right as far as both the dust collection and the "ease" of adjusting the height of the jig but also the bit itself. Guesswork on a cabinet makes your work look bad. I like the features you showed on the Massca and the all metal construction. The big plus in their attention to detail for the worker. Looks to be a solid built jig that will last. Thanks again, you helped me make my decision. Looks though the Kreg is going into the "garage sale" pile!

I had a Kreg K4 and gave it to a friend when I got the Kreg 720 Pro. Many of the comments you made were addressed in the 720 Pro but it is fairly bulky (vacuum attachment from either side, material supports, setting stop collar, etc.). Never tried a Massca but do like that it is aluminum rather than plastic like all Kreg tools seem to be. One thing I like about the Kreg 720 is that it automatically compensates for the material thickness so there is no adjustment of the tool, just the position of the collar stop on the drill bit.

I saw a demo of the Kreg 720 Pro at a Lowes store here in Az and the guy took a brand-new unit out of the box and the Auto-Adjust broke on the second pocket hole he tried to drill, he then took out another brand-new unit and it also broke but, on the 4th, or 5th hole. So that made up my mind as to whether or not I would buy one, I am sticking with my K4 but would like to have a K5 if I could still find one somewhere.

If you want something that'll microadjust to the exact board you have, the Armor Auto-jig might be a better option. It adjusts the alignment and the drill depth stop automatically as you clamp the piece in, and even tells you the ideal screw to use.

This was a great comparison, thanks. I recently reviewed a just very similar to the Massca (but without the additional supports / stop blocks), and I liked it because of the aluminium construction. But my issue was the fact that the sleeves that you slide the drill into were easily damaged by the hard steel drill bit - as was the aluminium. After using the Massca a few times, have you experienced that issue?

Hmmm, the Massca seems like a decent value. I doubt it is cast and made in similar fashion to the red ruler company. I am very much a value buyer, which is why I have "some" Festool and Wood Peckers stuff, where they have the best value for my uses. Anyway, the Greg Jig I have is well over 10 years old and getting tired, don't use it a lot, but will probably look at Massca when time to replace.

Most all of your problems with the K4 were solved with the K5 Kreg unit. It appears you are comparing an old obsolete Kreg unit to a new version of the the Maska unit. Can't sat much about the newest Kreg versions beyond the K5 as I have not used them. I use the K5 unit and have experienced none of the problems you point out with the K4 unit and I put in a lot of pocket holes. I did mount my K5 to a piece of MDF 3/4" thick, 1' x 2' as I use it in the shop as well as on site work. I can take everything I need on this setup. All 3 drill sizes and the different holders for them plus the drive bits. I work with 12mm, 18mm b/birch and1/2" and 3/4" ply. Never had a problem with hole spacing especially since a well designed project should hide the pocket holes as much as possible as most people consider them unsightly. I will say I prefer other methods of assembly for face frames but that is just me. By rhe way chip/dust pick up is great with the K5. Thanks for the interesting and Informative video.. keep up the good work.
@HuntsWorkshop
@HuntsWorkshop 2 жыл бұрын
That is good to know, thank you! I only got a K4 from them about 12 years ago, so that is true I don’t know a ton about the newer ones :) K4 is pretty solid all in all, I have no major complaints with that. I had to secure it to a board and then plane some side supports to match the jig height. It fixes everything, but it’s also a DIY project not an out of box thing like the massca. Appreciate your watching and the feedback!
@larrycurran7005
@larrycurran7005 2 жыл бұрын
@@HuntsWorkshop sorry. Forgot to mention the K5 also corrected that problem. The kit comes with two trays, one for each side that extend the work surface of the K5 to about 23" long. The trays also hold all the step drills and driver bits, the setup block for setting the stop collar ( design is like the Massca and other items like the stop for repetitive hole spacing etc.) The K4 is a solid unit. Purchased one for my son. When they introduced the K5 it basically added or changed most everything users ask for including putting the lock handle in front to improve ease of use and redesign of the clamp mechanism. The K5 is a solid unit but there may be better designs out there. Thanks for the reply.

Great video thanks. Just a couple of things to note is that the Kreg K4 that I purchased was metric and it was also supplied with a "material support stop". This was to support longer lengths of timber to stop it tipping. And it was also a stop for repeatable cuts. It could also be mounted on a Krebs mini track to give you the same features as the newer jig you compared it to. It's still a great product in my view.

He DID say more than one positive thing about the Kreg: He said that it was easier to change over to portable mode than the Massca, and he also said that he used the K4 forever and “loved it.” You’re the one who didn’t say anything positive (or negative) about either product, Lee Noble. Why don’t you use this opportunity to discuss the things that you feel were left out of the video? It just feels like Kreg hired you to sling mud on this video, but you couldn’t find one objectively verifiable criticism. Your claim that he didn’t say one positive thing about the Kreg jig has been debunked.
