Peggy Holds a degree in Fashion Design and Fashion Merchandising from Brigham Young University. As a mother to four sons, Peggy spends her time divided between teaching and creating new patterns for Silhouette Patterns, a line of contemporary patterns available to the home sewer. During her career she has taught college courses in pattern drafting and design. She professionally drafts patterns for individuals and manufacturers all across the country ranging from golf apparel to black tie performances. In addition to apparel designs, Peggy has designed the patterns of the costumes worn by the Mens Olympic Figure Skating Gold Medalist, Elvis Stojko.

I have only had one pair of pants fit in my life, and they are a relatively stable knit. I’m hoping to get back in to sewing this year and focus on pants. What a great inspiration this has been. Thank you so much! One of these days, I’m going to take your class in Southern Pines and go to NYC!

I have the same problem with all my pants, bought ones or handmade. Always too much gathering at the inseam just below the crotch, while the crotch length is perfect. I will try changing the pattern by cutting out the dart in the leg. Thank you so much😊

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have been working on pants muslin a few hours per week for the past month. The photos and diagrams helped tremendously. I've perfected the fit of my trouser pattern but have been struggling with a closer fitting style from stretch woven. Hopeful now with new understanding!

Does the dart in the last example affect crotch length? Or is it just extra fabric there that won't affect the length of the crotch?

Watch it one more time. (Don't deepen the crotch). She is only taking out some circumference at the same level as the bottom of the crotch. Great information Peggy! I don't make many pants but I recognize these issues in some I have. Thank you so much!

On your video at time 7:15 you show the back of the pants with two arrows and then on the left side you got the pattern where it has PANTS LEG DART,and then you show the front pants and back pants with those red arrows that you have in there that show on the front and back.. IS THAT WHERE U CUT THE PATTERN OPEN TO ADD MORE??

The part that I've never seen is taking the muslin, with all the adjustments and transferring those changes to the pattern! I tried that but the pattern puckered and wouldn't lay flat, I was concerned the pattern wouldn't be right. I really would like to see What exactly you do AFTER the muslin adjustments - or am I too dense to understand?

I recommend to use the muslin as your pattern...just draw in the grain and don't transfer back to the tissue..no need to do that.

So can u help me. What causes front pants to pull down by the knee when I walk? If I pull the pants up to my crotch I can walk better. What is happening?

Good presentation but didn’t address the major problem that obese women often have which is cupping and emphasizing a large “hanging” stomach. My daughter wears a 32w and has this problem. I know Peggy has said that it’s an indication of too much fabric there in front crotch length; however I am not able to pick up any excess fabric to “dart” out as it is taut….SO how do I fix it. I see this stomach problem a lot as I go through the grocery store doesn’t matter if it’s a knit pant or a stretch woven it’s a “bad” look. Help

This issue is common (also in RTW) and it is the result of grading where the balance of cross-body depth in the crotch seam is not appropriately balanced to the circumference

Pants never come high enough in the back. I have a curvy butt. Are you actually talking about a real dart or slashing and overlapping?
