Wow! This is really interesting. It immediately demonstrates the differences in understanding, perspective, and importance of the natural world compared to a European language and mindset. Miigwech.

Boozhoo. Gimino-taagoz giigaagiigidooyan. Miigwech for the lesson on animate and inanimate nouns. I'd like to discuss this idea of a car being animate. It was taught to me that animate objects also have a spirit. And if we consider the definition presented in this lesson, I don't know that a car can move on its own. I know this must be a topic of debate around Ojibwe country. You're doing a great job. Keep up the wonderful work. I look forward to watching more of your lessons. Mii'iw.

Tesla's can now move on their own... Interesting to think about..

It is definitely debatable, however I thought that perhaps the driver could represent the heart within a car. Therefore it could be placed under the category of animate. Just an observation is all and please correct me if it's not right. Miigwetch for your time and helping me develop my understanding of the language more!

A lotta people here seem to misunderstand the difference between animate and inanimate. In fact, I'd say it's a very English misunderstanding. English distinguishs animate vs inanimate nouns too. Inanimate nouns use the pronoun "it" while animate ones use the pronouns "he" or "she". In English, things which move on their own do not get to be animate, only things with heartbeats get to be animate. Unless it's a ship, in which case they seem to usually be called "she". Also some people refer to cars as "she". These are arbitrary categories, different depending on language and culture. In European culture, things like natural features and trees and such are usually seen as inanimate, and can be exploited for their resources because they are not living. Indigenous cultures don't think of it this way.

How do you pronounce - "minotaagozi " ? good sound meaning

Darin/Darren (whichever is correct), although I've heard "Ojibwa" pronounced correctly (I assume) as oh-JIB-wah, I'm not certain if swapping the 'a' for 'e' changes the pronunciation. Please clarify for me, since the Wikipedia article says nothing on the subject. Thanks.

So in the same way would that make leaves and feathers animate objects?

Cars only been around couple hundred years I'm confused and also I thought anishinabe didn't have a written language until the French used the Latin alphabet to translate the oral language

I can tell this is going to be a tough concept to understand. Is a rock an animate or inanimate object? Because a human can roll a rock down a hill and then it can move on its "own". Much like a car can move on its own if a human starts it and puts it into gear. Not criticizing the language, but it's an important concept to figure out if the language depends on these things.

Is something dead considered animate or inanimate? Like meat you're eating? Or a relative passed?
@chelseadee310 жыл бұрын
your lesson fails to explain that anishinaabemowin does not contain static forms of words such as nouns or verbs. the explanation of animate and inanimate is also lacking, for example why is the word for a playing card animate? you cannot simply equate english words to anishinaabe words because EVERY sound in an anishinaabe word has a meaning, and the sounds are used to build words. whereas English words are just memorized and used to build sentences.

I have always struggled to understand this, Animate & Inanimate. ;-(( All life , has spirit, Water, Air, Fire, Land and all things above& below..even human being and there thoughts/feeling have spirit. Spirit , as explained by my elders is all things that have a purpose , or intent, a reason for being. Take a Knife...it has a spirit. It can harm or help, that is its spirit, depending on the users purpose& intention. (the purpose of the tool). Things that are said to be Inanimate, I don't understand. Cause in a dictionary it says 'Inanimate means LIFELESS, spiritless... Yet these items are not lifeless, they are from the living breathing mother earth and waiting to be changed into beings of more purpose, by spirited beings (humans). or is it perhaps that there movement is so slow , that we humans are not capable to see it, or perhaps the atoms that make the object are so small , we cannot see..so we call it Lifeless/spiritless...inanimate?? Munj*jee*dik ?? nada*mo*shin..meegwetch

A car does not move on it's own. You make it move. A car does not have life in it. It would fall into the Inanimate category. 3:27

cars don't move on their own; people "move" them by turning the key and putting the gear into "D" .. so I disagree! NATIVE PRIDE!!!

Clouds are living things? wut? "They" don't move on their own, they don't have a heart beat, and they are not living. How are they animate? It's the wind that moves the clouds.

The French have feminine and masculine nouns and German have feminine, masculine and neuter nouns..Ojibway has animate and inanimate. That is just the way that language functions..no different than any other. No more or less logical.
@Jen627410 жыл бұрын
look at things from the viewpoint of a primitive civilization without modern science. That is how the language developed.

in anishinaabemowin. you could make the Status of importence of a Word higher, ıf you turn it from inanimateted to animated. this is not against the rules.

FIRST LESSON IN ENGLISH... aboriginal.... ab original, AB means no, or opposite of, like abnormal... you are not ab original, you are ORIGINAL, indigenous..... in means no, digenous means sexually reproductive... so no sexual reprodiction? wrong, we are all sexually reproductive, and native ... native means natural born... do you see how eurpoean royalty has looked at you? we are in a war for our souls and our rights to live on this planet without being controlled by others, natives had it best, before the evil from the west, most of our families came over looking for a better life, as we had all been enslaved as well, now we see how the hopi prophecies are coming to pass, what is it going to take most people to see that we have all been enslaved, but natives have been shown to have been the most brutally repressed people in the world. more than 60 million living here before europeans, leaving less than maybe a million or two on the entire continent of north america... the end times are here, the blue katchina is coming back , its the 10th planet, X and its causing our magnetic reversal , as we head for a micro nova, to restart the 5th world ....kzbin.info/www/bejne/jGPHlpZ6mKp9p9E kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpzQmJSup9edpck
