Glad to see so many engaging the mason jar method :) Wide mouth is the way to go, for sure! Shameless plug (tobacco pun intended 😂): for those interested in building storage, I’ve developed plans to build your own cabinet. It’s a great woodworking project and makes for a great way to enjoy both hobbies. Cheers!

Glad to see I'm not alone in using mason jar funnels. That's my go-to when storing bulk. When it comes to plastic zip bags, it's a crapshoot. Some really cheap thin ones are only good for a week or two. But I've been impressed with some of the bags used in shipping my Cornell and Diehl bulk orders. I've got bulk ribbon dated August 2021 that's perfectly fine. Maybe lost less than 5% moisture. Still best to can them. Also - AVOID DIRECT SUNLIGHT. You don't want condensation causing mold growth.

How fast a tin or bag will dry out also depends on location and season. Some geographic regions are dryer while others are more humid which directly affects the capability of the tin.

For the smaller mason jars, I recommend the Kerr brand. For some reason, Ball decided that the small mason jars don't need to stack, so they don't! The Kerr lids are wide enough to accommodate the bottom of the jar on top, so they stack very well.

Hi Wilson, open tobaccos I store in acrylic jars with a wide mouth and also in huge jars made of glass. The european coin tins are great for cellaring, I recently opened up a tin in which I cellared a VA flake for at least eight years. Aromatics should not be stored ... nevertheless I did and lucky me, the tobaccos are still great. Best for cellaring are german paint tins. 😊 Happy Puffing Lars

Eeegad. I usually jar up open tins right away. For anything that's in rotation, as opposed to cellaring, those jars go into 2.5 gallon (Rubbermaid) food storage containers along with a couple of Boveda humidification bags. Alas, I didn't realize those containers are vented, so I do have to "recharge" the Boveda bags after a while. Even like that, I may have to re-humidify blends that I smoke over the course of several months. I don't understand how you can keep them in the C&D tins for several months without issue. I don't think that'd work out for me, even in the very humid summers around here. The last time I did that with a C&D tin, which lasted about two weeks, it was a little too dry for my liking near the end. It could've been in the winter, though. Now, I tend to smoke blends straight up, without much drying time. I do have a tin of C&D's From Beyond that I keep forgetting to jar up, because I only smoke it occasionally, but it's in one of those food storage containers.

Good morning Wilson from the U.K. Thank you so much for this video, I’m just getting back to the pipe after a 50yr(!) break. I am only smoking once or twice a week and have chosen Peterson EMP as my start tobacco. Having watched a YT video that advised that tinned tobacco only lasts a few weeks I have decanted it into a “Tupperware” container. My question is, is that ok? How long is it likely to last or should I be looking for something different? Bearing in mind this 50gm/2oz will probably last 3 months or more. Kindest regards from deepest Dorset England .
@TheSpurgeonPiper
@TheSpurgeonPiper Жыл бұрын
Hi Clive, thank you for watching. For three months, I think a Tupperware container would suit just fine, though I don't think it's much better than the coin tin EMP comes in. I would still aim eventually at using some type of mason jar. But for no longer than three months, it shouldn't be a problem.

A couple of things I'm concerned with masons. 1. They recommend not to use the same lid more than once. After opening as they won't keep their seal too well. 2. I noticed that if there is too much negative space, my tobacco seems to dry out a bit. Not sure if you've had the same experience.
@wtfserpico
@wtfserpico Жыл бұрын
I think the recommendation about the lid is really most applicable if you actually "can" things in the mason jars and heat seal them.
@TheSpurgeonPiper
@TheSpurgeonPiper Жыл бұрын
I would concur with wtfserpico on the lid comment. As one who has canned in the past, that would absolutely be correct. For our use, I don't think it matters so much as the seal never truly "seals". As far as the negative space and drying out, I definitely agree. That's why it's best to use specific jars and why I recommend smaller ones for flakes, plugs, and cakes.

@AndreiPopescu-e5i Жыл бұрын
My advice: Store them into the jar as soon as possible. My experience shows that the "European tins" hold the moisture for a max of 1-2 weeks. Not 1-2 months... I've had amazing blends go dry by assuming a longer dry time. Keep piping!

@esbernjohnsen7621 8 ай бұрын
I just drop whatever can, tin or package the tobacco is in into a good quality zip lock bag with a 69% Boveda pack (humidity packs for cigar storage), and it will basically last indefinitely, as long as you replace the Boveda packs as they dry out (they can last months and months).

I read a forum post from someone that has to smoke blends very dry to get flavor from them, even Virginias. As he put, they're so dry, he always gets kind of wide-eyed looks when he shares his tobacco, and they feel just how dry it is. To that end, I was surprised recently by some C&D Red Odessa I hadn't finished. It still had a decent amount of flavor, even though it was much dryer than I had ever smoked it in the past.
