I'm white but grew up during the full-on "spare the rod, spoil the child" days, and we had to go cut our own switches from the tree. Extension cords worked, but man, a keen little switch would raise whelts on the back of your legs you won't ever forget. Most of them I deserved.

Lol! I'm Latino and this brought back memories of myself being disciplined mainly by my mom. My mom used whatever was nearby to whoop me. Belt, broomstick, spatula, big spoon, extension cord whatever was there at that moment she used. I have no resentment towards my mother those beatings shaped me into the person I am today.

We didn't get lots of whippins from Mom, because when you did get one, the effects would last for a very long time!! And she had a 'warning' laser beam gaze over ger glases that still keeps us in line😱☠️ I'll likely go to Hades for this BUT one of the funniest (at least I thought so)whoopins my little brother received was when at 16(ish) he refused to go mow the yard WHEN Mama said to! His refusal met a skinny metal curtain rod across his posterior and bare legs.😂

I'm plenty white, and got the tar beat out of me I don't know how many times. Belt, tree switch, flyswatter...eventually there was an old piece of countertop that got shaped into a paddle, with holes drilled in it, and my name neatly carved into one side. That thing fractured my arm once when I tried to block a blow that came at my FACE. I spank my own kids, on their little padded butts, but I won't submit them to the abuse I received from my parents. They took it way too far.

why do people praise being beat as a child? that is insane
@ashleylove4243
@ashleylove4243 Ай бұрын
Cuz some kids need their butts whooped. Some adults too, tbh. None of this gentle parenting crap. Understand, I'm not not talking about abuse. Like, just beating your child to bruises for no damn reason. But if you have repeatedly told, explained, or ask a child something and your expectations are being blatantly disregarded, then that is disrespectful. And disrespect should never be tolerated. Time outs and talks don't work for everyone. Now it's time up!! Now as parents we are expected to love and care for our children. To guide them. Yet for some, it takes a far more firmer hand. It just is what it is. May not be your preferred parenting choice, but we (my generation) were raised to be Spartans. That's why this generation is so full of soft, weak, entitled lil shits. Bcuz instead of disciplining them, people coddle and enable their BS.

Yes. You can make even an elephant obey through fear and intimidation but it WILL absolutely hate you somewhere deep inside until one of you is unalive. Not everyone is wired the same way. Violence only seems like it worked until enough time passes or some mental trigger is tripped. When I went to make my peace and forgive my elderly parent, he was too far gone into his dementia to grasp anything. I'm now realizing it's also too late to even discuss it with my mother as she heads down a similar path. I have to now take that sliver of resentment with me until MY DAYS are done. It's my personal burden. Y'all go ahead and laugh though. Take your joy if you can. The world needs comedy so I forgive all of you.

I’m sorry for what happened to you. Abuse if never okay. But I don’t believe that was the point of his joke, the comedian seemed to be more commenting about getting spanked as a kid. I hope you continue to heal and that things get better
@puirYorick
@puirYorick 28 күн бұрын
@@ucky9675 Thanks for reaching out in kindness. I'm doing okay. I was not even what I would call abused - just got whipped a few times. I'm not the kind of person that forgets anything though. I need to reconcile everything as a rule since it remains with me until I'm gone. I also grew up hearing stuff just like these jokes but in my real life from cousins and our elder relations like they were endorsing that as a point of obvious cultural pride. I strongly disagree. The idea that getting hit did no harm is a lie in at least my case. It seeded a bit of hatred towards the two people I expected to love me the most - my parents. That was a severe and life-long harm emotionally. Hearing an ignorant comic thoughtlessly shucking and jiving about it like any other stand-up cliche is not something I stand silently by for anymore. It's a free world for now so you're allowed to feel differently about stuff. I stated my piece. I wish you peace and thanks again.☮

I remember walking home from high school and a naked little black boy came running up to me screaming with fear because his mother beat him so bad that he had welts on his body. I took him to my house where my mother filed a police report on the mother for child abuse and family services took him away from her and put him in a better home. This comedian's memory of the past as being a child paradise is pure bullsh^t.
@ashleylove4243

That was abuse. And I'm truly sorry about that. She obviously went to the extreme. Everyone's experience is different. But bcuz it is a culturally shared experience is why we laugh. A lot of us are better bcuz of this. Some people don't believe in beatings. Some do. I say discipline your child but in moderation. So you're not raising entitled lil s**** who mess up everyone else's day.
@ucky9675

Getting abused and getting spanked are not the same thing. Abuse was ugly then and is ugly even now. But abuse is not what this comedian is referring to. He’s joking about how there is a lack of discipline today compared to back then which isn’t wrong. I worked with kids for years, I remember hearing parents tell their little kids “hands are for kindness not for hitting”. Years later when their kids are full grown rebellious teens I’d hear the parents say the same thing. Guess what’s the kids responses were? One kid spit in his moms face, another got arrested, etc.
