First of all, if someone tells you something like, "The terminal ballistics of 9mm and 45 acp are indistinguishable with modern propellants," they are wrong for more than one reason. There is a huge variety of loadings for both calibers. So only in a very rigged comparison are the terminal ballistics identical. Secondly, modern propellants and projectiles have made 45 acp even deadlier as well. With that said, 45 still has some pretty unique advantages. It's a fairly powerful (for a handgun) but still very low pressure caliber, which extends the life of firearms, even when compared to 9mm. It isn't tapered like 9mm, which theoretically doesn't impair feeding as badly. In some sense, you could also consider it a "pre-expanded" cartridge in case a true expansion fails. Lastly, because many loadings rely on mass for much of their energy, you don't lose nearly as much energy as in other calibers, like 9mm, or especially 357 Sig or Magnum from firing from a short barrel. It's a good caliber. A great one, in fact. Not that 9mm sucks. Both calibers are different tools for different jobs.

Thanks for the insightful comment!
@glenndavis27626 жыл бұрын
oh please - they all make fairly small holes relatively speaking and penetrate nearly the same depth. ....consider it a "pre-expanded" cartridge - lol
@Luciferofom6 жыл бұрын
You do realize that 9mm tends to actually penetrate a bit more, right? I wish you had brought that up. 9mm give you more depth, less width on average. 45 auto is just the opposite.
@JMBAmericanIronShallNotBeInfri5 жыл бұрын
@@Luciferofom Some people prefer short and fat without as much penetration, others like it long and pencil shaped that go deep! Of course you've got the 44 magnum crowd that like them big and deep penetrators! Lol

During a trip to the LGS/range last month, a Glock guy told me 1911’s were outdated. I asked him why, and he said his Glock held 17 rounds, to which I replied, “How many times to you plan on missing?” He muttered to a shop employee, “If you’re going to carry a 1911, get a Colt Mustang.” People are too funny...

However, if others listen what I hear you say is carry what works best for you and this is what you are proficient and comfortable with. Also, some places individuals need to be proficient in at least 2 handguns due to seasonal considerations such as switching from a full 1911 to an LCR in hot climates in summer. Thanks again!

anti 45 people always overlook the .45 super compared to 10mm , subsonic suppressed 45 , 45 shotshells, and the ability to train & use defensively 45 fmj on affordably without the need to rely on HP expansion through thick clothing compared to 9mm, and penetration of the 45, which still makes it the best all around caliber

I still remember reading all through the 90's in all the gun magazines how the 1911 was dead on the ash heap of history and it's now the age of the modern cheap plastic wander 9's with cheap stamped sheet metal parts because it's so obvious that they're so superior! Yet today decades later we have more manufacturers producing and selling more 1911's than ever before in it's entire history combined! It kinda reminds me of the Trump campaign being predicted for a lopsided loss, and yet here we are, just like the 1911!

Several things. Number one, I sub to you because of the title of your channel. Don't stop talking about 1911. I think it would be cool to see your production guns and get your thoughts on them since you are a aficionado of the type. Number two, Clint Smith from Thunder Ranch carries 1911's. Enough said. 3, Law enforcement is switching back to 9 mm in many cases because the ammunition is much cheaper and the lower recoil makes it easier for non gun guy cops to qualify with passing scores. And finally, 45 ACP is not the only 1911 caliber. The original Commanders submitted to the military in the late 40s or early 50s were aluminum frame 9 mm's.

There are a lot of people that just want to hear about the Colt Series 70 believe it or not so maybe i'll try to incorporate that later in the year and also I will see if I can incorporate or maybe even borrow some different "production" style 1911s to do Show and Tell / Range Time Shorts. I have quite a few DVDs (remember those?!) of Clint Smith and find them invaluable and stuffed with great information.

i've never heard someone who wasn't ignorant to the simple fact of the 1911. it's made by dozens of companies. Glock=1 company. s&w=1 company. sig=1 company. hk=1 company. imagine if hi point started producing "glocks". imagine if taurus started doing it- and they kinda do, they make the m9 and they do a shit job at it. so how can anyone judge a 1911 if practically every company making them does it wrong? it's like saying the ar15 sucks cause someone's pos brand ar is garbage. 1911s that are built right such as some rugers and rock islands, Dan Wesson, Nighthawk, Accuracy X, and Chambers custom are great. Crap ass 1911s from taurus, ati, kimber, les baer, wilson, colt, etc. blow ass. and on top of that, the parts such as magazines, mag releases, slide stops, firing pin stops, etc, are made by dozens of companies as well. if a glock shits the bed with the worst glock mag made, are you going to say glock is shit? is that so hard to understand? when the 1911 was introduced into service, it was designed to be field serviceable. when the 1911 was originally produced, it withstood the most rigorous military trial ever used for a service gun. Since then, companies have changed not only the tolerances and materials, but the angles and dimensions that were originally used. the 1911 has long frame rails that are fit into the slide that have to work with the barrel link, the slide stop, the mag release, the barrel hood, the locking lugs, the bushing, etc.. if the dimensions are off by a little, they can jam up. so they have to be done right. Then, to make it worse, they figured out that a 1911 can achieve great accuracy and try to achieve that by building them tight. which is wrong. The 2 most accurate "brands" of 1911 you can get are accuracy x and chambers custom. both will shoot 10 round groups under 2 inches at 50 yards. they aren't impossible to rack, require break-ins and break themselves apart like a les baer. they are the most reliable guns i've ever seen. look up accuracy x on youtube. watch the gun shoot 1.5" at 50 yards and be easy enough to rack that you can do it one handed with inertia. watch the gun feed a mag of empty brass. my point is a 1911 can be perfect and it can suck ass. are you getting a more reliable gun for the money going with a modern gun? yes. are you getting more capacity? yes. but you wont ever get the shootability of a 1911 from a glock. modern guns are modified to be as 1911-like as they can get them. the majority of people, and i'm talking 99% of shooters suck. and they'll always suck. i'm talking not able to shoot a 90 or better on a b8 target at 25 yards. but for the guys that can do that, they perform at a higher level with a good 1911. that's why the bullseye national champs choose them. that's why some spec ops still chooses them. however, i will say. in combat, i'd take a glock over most anything else. i'm talking war. for carry, i chose my accuracy x or my custom cz 75 compact. with my accuracy x, i shoot 10 rounds in about 2-3 inches. with my cz, i shoot 10 rounds in about 4-5 inches at 25 yards. my glock is a bit worse. i'm working on it but i dont shoot much anymore. i chose the gun i shoot better.

Why do people got to be ammo snobs who cares you shoot what you like. I like 9mm but I'm not going to be ooo it's better. I like all ammo as long as it go's bang. I like glocks them guns are all I ever have. But I am looking to get into something else. I'm not going custom but just looking for something different. Was looking at 1911 but I don't know. And the ammo capacity is a good thing for meany reason like there's alot of what if you can't control no one will ever know if that will happen to them but it can happen to any one. For example home invasion if one happens to you you don't know how meany people are breaking in could be just one person could be 3 could be 5 or 6 or 12 ya don't know and for the people that say o only takes one good shot with my 45 take them down well that may be true but your going to be under stress and scared and if you have loved ones in the home your going to be worried about them and most likely your going to miss because your just going to pop off rounds left and right because your in fear mode and want to get them before they get to your family. Others reason are like people that are really fucked up on drugs if you have some one really messed up coming up on you intending to do you harm I don't give to craps if you got a 45 or 9mm your going to have to put a few shots into them. I like 1911 I never had one before but I like them but the issues I have with them is one the dam mag come on make a double stack mag. If you have one that shoots 9mm you only got what 9 rounds and 45 you have 8. Yes the capacity of the 1911 does suck and another issue is I in my own opinion is they are to finicky if the slides not perfect and a little wobbly they run like shit and jam one little peace of dirt or dust gets in them they jam. And the way you have to break them down to clean them is just plain stupidity. I do like them those but they not the greatest out there. If people don't want plastic guns then look at the 1911 you want more rounds go Beretta m9 or 92fs those are a good option to. Me I don't know I might go 1911 just to have one but it makes me think a little more when I see a price take on a 1911 that is 900 dollars for a average middle of the road 1911. I don't know.
