New? This is as old as the dribble. This is what guard play used to look like before the NBA implemented the 5 second back down/back to the basket rule and then legislated out contact. When perimeter defenders were allowed to actually defend and challenge offensive players for space on the floor, being able to function and see the floor out of a back down dribble was mandatory. Go watch Magic, Mark Jackson, Rod Strickland, Chuck...

Magic did this All the time in the 80’s. Many examples of bigger guards doing this in the last 30+ years. The main difference is that bigs don’t like to play big anymore so the lane is wide open, and the guards have much more time on the ball before double teams etc. Basically if big guys don’t want to be labeled as a back to the basket post player, then the guards will assume that role, because inside out will always work better than skip passes around the perimeter and jacking up contested threes. In other words, if the big boys want to play perimeter ball, then the guards have evolved into the interior presence. Hard to compare eras, but I’d love to see Hakeem etc play against today’s post players.

Booty ball, aka, the very thing every grade school kid learned to do (and learned the need to defend) when playing 1 on 1 with their friends. It also highlights - right there from the very first time you start playing the game - the one inherent flaw in the game itself: _Basketball is impossible to call fairly._ Some contact are clearly charges, and some are clearly fouls by the defender, but most are somewhere in the middle, and those either result in no call (so advantage to the offensive player, as booty ball then becomes unstoppable) or a foul on the defender (again, advantage to the offense).
