As someone who has never been comfortable with the idea of the U.S. military force being used against domestic threats (real or perceived), it's disheartening to imagine a situation in which we would have to rely on the military disobeying their commander in chief in order to save democracy.

German infantry officer here: there are very, very, very few cases when a modern military is used within the country’s borders, unless for military defense against an attacker from the outside. One of the exceptions covers the use of manpower and heavy equipment in case of natural disasters. Never the use of weapons against the populace.

Note how many of them refer to non-police citizens as "civilians." That is correct, but using that word in the context the police use it in allows them to distinguish themselves from the general population. But, unless they're on active military duty (reserve or guard doesn't count!), police are civilians also, even though some of them might not like being reminded of that.
