They are spectacular when they flower; sometimes heaps taller than the plant itself! Unfortunately, your cristate Echinopsis will probably never flower. This is a common side effect of any cristate or crested cacti, but at least they do look truly weird!

So when you talk about letting Cactus rest (during winter), we're supposed to water only rarely. . .minimally. So I live in SF, CA. It rains. But should I take it out of the open aren then? It's not really a lot of rain during the winter. But should it get 'zero' water (which means put it under an umbrella or shelter)?

"Rainbow Burst" would be a hybrid seed strain name. Plants from this strain would be variable in form and colour, hence the "rainbow" moniker. Latin names for cacti are ever changing and confusing but mostly very simple. The genus name: Echino = hedgehog. Opsis = appearance. That's a wonderful description...Of just about every cactus! The species name comes next and usually describes the flower or spine colour, the plant's form, the location where the plant grows, or the name of the European person who "discovered" the plant and decided to name it. Common Latin names for colours are: Flava - yellow, aurata - golden or orange, viridi - green, alba - white, rubra - red. Latin names make descriptions easier and more concise. It's much easier and quicker to call a plant Echinopsis Sanguiniflora than to call it "a cactus that looks like a hedgehog with blood coloured flowers." Hope this helps a little. I don't mean to be patronising, just giving you information most plant books don't give or explain. Looking at your photo I thought at first you were Mexican, then I heard your voice and now realise you're from the Philippines. I enjoy your channel and seeing the myriad cacti you grow so well. Mabuhay!

Thank you so much for all the information. This certainly helps me and I hope the viewers will read your comment as well. The names and the classification are confusing. But thank you for dissecting the name and explaining how they are derived. Yes, I’m Filipino. 😃

Thank you for showing us your gorgeous Echinopsis collection and teaching us about their care. I have found that cacti are prone to dropping their flower buds when their position in relation to their light source is changed, so I don't move or rotate them after the buds form until they bloom. This just happened to my Thanksgiving cactus. All the mature buds it had when I brought it home opened beautifully, but it dropped all of the buds still forming. Now it seems to be getting some new little buds, so I'll be careful & not move it.

Great info. I was given one by a fellow who moved to the Oregon coast from Arizona. My brother cares for it. Because of light drizzle this evening, he brought it inside. 3 hours later, its two blooms popped open and we are looking to discover its actual name. I see totally different ones and the same ones all called the same thing. We're learning. It's new to us. Beautiful blooms and not yet fully open.

My baby echinopsis rainbow burst is leaning to one side, the sunlight exposure is around 6 hours. I have watered it once since i recieved it. What to do?
@CactusCaffeine3 жыл бұрын
Leaning could be because it is following the direction of the sun, or the bottom has become soft due to rot. I would take it out of the soil to check what is going on underneath.

I agree with you Ana, one of the first cacti that someone should have is Echinopsis👍☺️. Yours are very beautiful 😍💯💕. I'm very new at cacti, I've had only a few Gymnocalycium and Lobivia flowers last year, but yesterday I saw my first Echinopsis subdenudata flowers: It was marvelous! So big and pure white! And my Echinopsis hybrid surprised me being peach colour a few weeks before and both are making more buds. So rewarding and easy to care for. And they give a lot of flowers. The only 'bad new' is that they fade in one day🥴. Have a good day in Las Vegas😘☮️🌵💖!

Brian The Bold I just stick them about 1/4inch buried in soil and water lightly every time the soil is dry. Rooting is faster on warmer temperatures. I had pups that sit all winter doing nothing but when spring came, they rooted fast.🙂

Hurray, another genus video. I think I'm really starting to like Echinopsis. Chris just got me a premade bowl arragement that has a few in it so my collection has now grown. Love the subdenuata fuzzies or domino. Oh man all the names. I'm a biologist and come from a background mostly of zoology. Once I began to dabble in botany I was amazed at the chaos, fighting and name changes back and forth. No one can agree on anything and we growers don't know the names of our plants cause of it. This doesn't happen nearly as much in zoology and I'm guessing probably not so much in the other kingdoms either. Anyway, you've got a lovely collection and I enjoyed seeing and learning about all the echinopsis.
