I think that he is in a position where he was almost never going to flourish. In hs during his junior year ( he reclassed up to skip senior year) when they won geico he was ina position where he was the main ball handler and had an efficient 3 point scorer (jakobe walter), 2 very good bigs, and a scheme that was built around his playmaking. This year on unc he has to Share reps bringing the ball up with RJ Davis and even when he gets the ball a lot of unc offense just ends up in an Armando bacot post 1 on 1. I think that next year when he is the main Ball handler he will succeed more and have a leap similar to what we thought tyrese proctor would be.

I could absolutely see that, his form is nice. So it’s weird his confidence and jumper is so bad
@jamesanastasia323711 ай бұрын
Don't believe Davis or Bacott are the reason he's struggling in certain areas of his game!! Basically he stepped up in competition and his weaknesses were in full display!!! The better teams have scouted him and know exactly what we see!!! Doesn't matter who he's playing with he'd still have those problems!!!
@5stariley11 ай бұрын
@@jamesanastasia3237 he would still have a shooting issue, but his off ball weakness wouldn’t have shown because for most colleges he would be the main ball handler. I think Baylor would be the ideal situation for him. A place where he can start right away as the main ball handler and he also has an efficient scorer as his sg and he has a very talented big man in yves there to catch his lobs and such. If u watched Elliot in hs he was going back and forth with collier as the best passer in hs. I would personally say collier, but Elliot was throwing wild passes you had replay to see how they got open. I think he could be a legitimate lottery pick if he went to the right situation.

Unc fan, watch every game. The potential is right there for him. He works on that shot and can get comfortable it’s open up even more. I disagree he “hides” be hind being a pass first player and high IQ. That is just 100% true, you can see it, in the way he plays. Nothing wrong with that, you still need that in the NBA no matter what analytics says. This kid wouldn’t be ranked if he was talented, or has the potential. Defense is okay, being smaller you’re gonna get caught in mismatch’s. He’s also getting better with his free throws. Confidence will only get better playing with experienced guys. And still think he’s here at least 3 years until he’s able to go play pro anywhere. Give it time, that’s will tell us everything we need.

He didn't have these shooting issues at other levels. The mechanics don't have any big problems. He just got in his own head. My gut is he'll have a big jump fresh -> soph year. Now, I don't think he'll be an elite shooter, but there's no reason to think he couldn't shoot ~33% from three for the 2024-25 season at UNC.

But in order for UNC to have any chance of winning a National Championship or the Championship itself, they’re going to need everyone. And I sure that EC is working on his outside shot.

The potential is there, he just needs time to develop. Better free throw shooting, a middy and/or floater, and a decent 3 would all really elevate his game. He needs to limit the turnovers too, but we've seen great glimpses of what he's capable of as a passer.

I look at it like he's playing the true 1 Role right now. Pass first, create first, be the guy to reset the play mid shot clock. He's never getting clean "this is your specific shot to take passes" i.e. the passes he passes out, and that matters. Like RJ, he's a combo leaning more towards the 2 but his game is to attack from a scoring position first but will see the pass if it comes about. Or coming off screens catch and shoot( this shot is for me to take) and or off the dribble. Once he gets more usage from a catching the ball as its his shot to take perspective he will get better.. not saying 20 plus pts per.. but round 15-20 pts per.. 7.5 assist per type beat.. Great assessment btw!

I respect your opinion and the fact thst you are willing to be unbiased as a UNC fan but there is more to basketball than just shooting. Especially as a point guard. Rajon Rondo is a guy that was never a particularly great shooter (he hit them when they counted) and was a big contributor to a championship team in recent years with the Lakers and obviously as a younger starting pg with the C's. Everybody doesn't need to be a knockdown shooter, and I think it's important to point out that nobody is a finished product at age 19. I mean, if he were a great shooter then he would have some other deficiency. He DOES have to improve because he isn't even hitting 20 percent which is really not good, but other parts of the game do matter. Take Jason Kidd for example. Word is that coming out of college at Cal he couldn't shoot a lick. He was the ultimate fast break guy and pass first point guard and is an all time great passer, BUT, by the time his career was done he finished top 10 in league HISTORY in made 3's. People can improve. Ben Simmons is a different case because he won't shoot the ball at all. I'm a Duke fan, so I saw Cadeau pass up shots but I think a confidence boost and some time in the gym will bode well for him. He is only 19. A ton of time to improve. There is a lot to be said about a guy that can run a team. As much as they like to call the NBA "positionless" people still say "The Suns need a point guard" which is literally a defined position. If he puts in work on the J he will be fine in the future

Being a North Carolina basketball fan I have been scratching my head wondering how this kid received a 5 star rating???🤔 He definitely has a lot of holes in his game that needs to be addressed going forward in his college basketball career!! Shooting is just one of his many weaknesses on the offensive side of the ball!! Another is he doesn't have a left hand (finishing) to speak of!!! He primarily goes (and finishes) with his right hand!!!College basketball commentaries always compare him to Kendall Marshall and I truly don't see that!! Kendall is the greatest passer in North Carolina basketball (definitely)and maybe the ACC history!! (imo) Totally two different skillsets!!! (too many to name) But its too early to definitely label him as "overrated" and we'll have to see in another 2 or so years!!! Go Heels!!!

You’re completely right and I think that’s why UNC works for him. I remember after watching the blue and white scrimmage thinking he had an ugly shot. And soon I noticed not only were the mechanics not good but there was no confidence in it. Elliot is one of those kids you’re happy we have NIL for and honestly a lot like sharife cooper, though I think Sharife was a little more confident. Elliot gets to play alongside one of the best shooters to play at Carolina in RJ Davis, to really show him what an elite level shooter looks like. Both him and Seth Trimble have the opportunity to use each off season to solely work on their shooting abilities, because the other parts of their game are solid. Elliot can do this while getting paid and not have to end up like Sharife. I also believe the fact that Hubert Davis and Marcus Paige (two of the best three point shooters in UNC history) can help him develop. But I completely agree in your assessments.
