I own 7 of Dan's books and read a couple more library books by him. I enjoyed " Summer of Night" a lot because parts of it reminded me of growing up on the late 1960s and 70s . For me Dan hits or totally misses. Love him when he hits.

I'm glad you enjoyed Summer of Night. It wasn't my cup of tea, but I understand why others liked it. A high school teacher of mine suggested it years ago, telling me that it was "like King's It, but better."

I thought I would LOVE Summer of Night but tbh it ended up being very mid for me. I'm not sure exactly why, maybe the diversity of narrative voice between the characters. Character work and prose were great but it ended up being very average for me.

Same. I hear so much praise that I was left feeling let down when I finished.

Great video and I totally feel what you said about Carrion Comfort!!!

Thank you. I started with Simmons' historical fiction, and was very happy to discover that he also wrote horror. (This was 2017 or 2018, if I recall correctly.) I still haven't found anything that's gotten under my skin like Carrion Comfort did.

One last thing. Dan's collection WORLDS ENOUGH AND TIME contains two stories you will probably enjoy for sure. "Orphans Of The Helix" the final story published in the HYPERION universe. It is set several hundred years after the final book. The other story, "The Ninth Of Av" was written before ILIUM and is sort of a prequel or precursor to that series of books.

I did not know there was a prequel Illium story! I'm very excited to hear that, thank you

You will find a few other stories that expanded into novels as you read PRAYERS TO BROKEN STONES. The original novella "Carrion Comfort" as well as the story "Remembering Siri" which is nearly word for word the Consul's tale from HYPERION. Also, one of the best stories, "The Death Of The Centaur" is pretty well-connected to the HYPERION quartet of books.

I'm specificallt excited for "Death of the Centaur," because I hear that's where Raul got his name in Endymion

I really enjoyed the video even though I disagree on quite a few of your rankings. And I think if you go back and push through SONG OF KALI you will enjoy it while at the same time dreading the way Simmons puts you in that dark depressing atmosphere.

Thanks for the feedback, and I'm glad you enjoyed! I plan to do Song of Kali again. Hopefully I was just in the wrong state of mind when I tried it.
