This was great, Kate, and I agree with every syllable you said. I'm a bit annoyed that KZbin never recommended it to me before today, since I've been watching Ghosts content on it since late 2021. I also loved the two episodes you mentioned where Jay and Sam were possessed by Hetty and Thorfinn respectively. Cute little Sam stomping around growling like a Viking was so funny. Near the end you said, "I hope it comes out on DVD." Well, it has and I got mine last week. 😏 (I've lost too many photos, videos and audio clips "in the cloud," so I want the episodes on something I can touch.) Loved the Third Rock from the Sun comparison, too.

I personally find that similarly the office, this show is a great example of this sort of adaptation in how it resembles the launch of spacecraft. The ship that is the show is propelled into the space that is broadcasting by the rocket of the original's popularity. Then, crucially, it knew when, where, and how to separate from that rocket and plot its own course.

My first experience was with the English version and although I liked it, I do prefer the American version. The American ghosts are in my opinion, more likeable whereas some of the English ghosts are just annoying.
@katecastreviews4639 Жыл бұрын
I've only seen the first couple of episodes of the BBC version, but I don find the American Ghosts more endearing too.
@oliviadaly4795 Жыл бұрын
Interesting! I find the opposite. When you're stuck with people for that long, you're bound to come across someone annoying. Which ones did you find annoying? I can see why people might find Kitty annoying because of her clinginess. They haven't gone into her backlstory yet, but I don't think she was very old when she died (maybe 17, 18?)/maybe had some kind of learning disability that left her like that. I also find the US having to explain things rather than letting the audience come to a conclusion, i.e. telling the audience rather than showing them. For example, when the living people walk through them, the US ghosts have to verbally explain it causes them a tonne of pain, but you can see from the UK ghosts' expressions, it makes them nauseous. 'Show, don't tell' is an important piece of advice to live by when writing books/essays and also important in TV writing. Personally, though I like the US version as well as the UK version (I grew up watching the UK cast in the original Horrible Histories run from 2009-2013 and have seen the rest of the troupe's work, so prefer the UK version more) I find Pete (from the US version) so much more annoying and cringe (yet weirdly still kind of loveable) than his UK counterpart Pat. I also find Isaac so one-dimensional compared to the Captain. Literally, Isaac was from the Revolutionary War where you could be killed for being supposedly gay even if you weren't and someone had a grudge and 'outed' you, so why would he be so flamboyant and at risk of being killed? Also, maybe we were supposed to see more of Isaac's backstory in S3, but to me all there is his his gayness. No incidental/subtle representation. Just gay flamboyantness (obviously there are some gay people like that) and not much other understanding of who he is as a person. Compare that to the 9th (S2 E3) episode of the UK version where we see Cap being a (slightly inept) military leader, dealing with feelings of unrequited love/rejection from his crush who was leaving to fight in North Africa, and him literally sacrificing himself to save his friends (despite being dead himself) as well as being a closeted gay man. No wonder Ben (the actor) has become a bit of an LGBT icon (ironically, despite not being gay when Brandon/Isaac is LGBT) i've not seen any of that incidental representation showing that Isaac is more than just his sexuality from Brandon. Maybe they'll explore it in S3, but the UK cast (who have been described as 'The Monty Python of this generation') are very very good at that.

I think you need to rethink the intro regarding UK shows revamped for American tv. Some of the greatest American shows have been inspired from UK tv: Three's Company (Man about the house), All in the Family (Till Death do us Part), Sanford and Son (Steptoe and Son).

Just found your channel from your review of Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva, always been a fan of the Layton series and I'm always looking for people's takes on it. I'm also a big fan of Ghosts. The original UK version. As a Brit I grew up with a very popular show Horrible Histories, the actors of which went on to write and act in Ghosts. And yeah I was super skeptical when I heard the US were adapting it, the first teaser looked pretty bad to me. Anyway, all that being said, the US version is freely accessible in the UK, so naturally I watched it all to judge it. And yeah, really didn't care for those first two episodes. But the longer it went on the more I appreciated it, it does show its differences well. It covers ideas the UK hasn't despite now having four seasons, and even with translated characters does take them in unique ways. It's kind of nice to have a more goofy version that can go more silly with ideas: the possession, Albert's fanatic etc. Yeah the acting never quite grabs me, and the usual short runtime does rush plots. But for what it's worth it's one of the best US remake I've seen. Sorry for such a long comment. Very nice video, I like how well you describe the show without spoiling it for people who haven't seen it. Would really like to hear your thoughts on the rest of the UK version, there are some really emotional scenes in later series . Like with the Office, I think the UK & US Ghosts demonstrates a big difference with our comedies. In the UK we go bleak, we go realistic, we like awkward scenarios we'd hate to be in. Whereas the US is more staged, more uplifting and will have a fair bit more slapstick.

Don't be sorry. Thank you so much for such a thoughtful comment! It's nice to get the perspective of a UK viewer so I was really intrigued to read your thoughts. Also thank you very much for checking out my Professor Layton review! Hope you subscribed because I do have plans to talk about the gentleman again in the future.

Trevor is my favorite character because of the Bernie Madoff bit, and a few other just hilariously well-timed lines (historical timeline and comedic timing) his slight growth through the show but commitment to his old virtues is hilarious and well written. He comes in hot with (the term for going to the afterlife) and that awkwardly repeats well throughout the series. Not many roles could have pulled that joke off, this one is perfect.

Not really. I think it just comes down to a different in approach to the writing culturally. There's a reason the UK Office and US Office are two completely different beasts, but they work in their own ways. If you ask me, the challenge (and usually failure) comes form keeping what made the concept so special, while retooling it for a different audience.

As you mentioned, Episodes 1 and 2 are pretty much beat for beat in both versions, so it doesn't really give you the best idea of the differences. Therefore, it might be worth watching more BBC episodes for a better comparison. I suggest _The Thomas Thorne Affair, Bump in the Night,_ and _Gone Gone_

I know I'm a bit late; but I hope you feel a bit better about Nancy with seeing her a bit more in season 2. I think she was a bit mean to Pete in her episodes with him because she saw how much of a pushover he was to the other ghosts and was trying to get him out of it. That's why when he finally snapped at her in front of the other ghosts; instead of outing him like she threatened to do; she kept his story and gave him a pat on the back and said she was proud of him.
