There's 2 different versions of "Ghosts", a story about a woman who can see the eclectic group of ghosts stuck haunting her newly acquired home. The Original UK version, and the US version.
But who did it better? Let's dive in and fine out!

As someone who’s only seen the UK version, I really love the contradictions each character has. I like the captain’s stern demeanour and his soft interior, or Julian’s selfishness mixed with a need to be liked. Robin especially (my favourite character) is wise and intelligent and eager to learn, but he’s also still dumb and easy to scare (even though objectively he is the second scariest ghost).

@@srstacy Thomas Thorne, the creepy poet with no respect for boundaries (emotional or physical), and has literal withdrawal symptoms when he doesn’t heavy-handedly flirt with Alison, who is a married woman who has told him repeatedly over and over again that she is not interested in him that way and that she doesn’t want him acting like that.

As a native Brit who's seen all of the UK Ghosts and loved it, I gotta say I couldn't get past three episodes of the American version. I get that there is 100% culture differences in comedy, and there are some American Comedies I love, Schitt's Creek being a personal favourite. But the American version felt so bubbly and almost sickeningly sweet to me. A lot of the American Ghosts felt too hyper and cheerful, too colourful for a show meant to be about, y'know, Ghosts. I do love some of them like the Viking, the Storyteller and the Speakeasy Singer, but the rest felt like they were sprinting to get a laugh out of you, and came across way more as actors or kids in a school play rather than characters. The American version also felt, too clean for lack of a better word. With UK Allison we see her panic and struggle and properly get emotional over her situation, while also having a much wider range of emotions. While the American Samantha always looked like she was in a commercial for a brand of furniture. Allison feels like she could properly ugly cry when something went wrong and I just don't buy anything from Samantha when she say's she's sad. The outfits and the houses of the American one felt way more like a set, their clothes all looked too nice and colourful, which is fine but again, makes them feel way more like costumes. The UK House felt like it was falling apart, that one wrong step could snap the whole place apart. You could buy that someone died in that house, and the body was still probably in there somewhere. Team GB also had the advantage of a team who worked on Horrible Histories, a historical comedy show based on the children's book for years known for it's historical accuracy. So the cast and crew knew what sort of styles each ghost should have, which helps to give them more texture to their looks. The mud on Robin, the Soot on Mary and even the drabness of Fanny's old outfits. And I just can't imagine any of that on the American Ghosts. I also think that the UK situation story leads to higher highs down the line. Because the ghosts take on an almost Adversarial Role in the start and the Couple feel like they're trapped in their situation. When they finally do start opening up to each other, and eventually enjoying their time together it feels more impactful. It's a relationship that had to be worked on, where compromises had to be made and feels more real. When you do reach those proper tear jerking moments of the characters coming to terms with their lives, how they died and who they left behind, it feels more like their minds have been changed. And when they can act sillier and happy it hurts all the more. Any Christmas Episode is a great example of this but I got properly teary with the Wedding Episode in the UK. With the American Ghosts, it felt like they just immediately jumped onto liking the couple, they immediately started to reveal their backstories and personalities. I'm sure they have cooler backstories and secrets to reveal down the line but I don't know where you could go emotionally from that show. I'd love to see what they could do, but honestly just the way that they delivered jokes felt like I was trapped at a friends Improv group and I couldn't leave. Like, Flower has a really interesting backstory, and is one you could never do here in the UK, I'd love to know more about her past, but they spoiled all the best reveals already. We know she was a hippie who turned cultist who turned bank robber. Imagine if they had just told us she was a Hippie and then we reveal more and more of her past over time. Really sink the knife with these revelations about what kind of life she had. But now, to me it feels like you've wasted that dramatic potential. I'm super glad you enjoyed it, and that Ghosts could make it's way to the Americas, and I would genuinely love to know more about some of the ghosts and their backstories. But man I just couldn't get past that 3rd episode. it's absolutely a me thing though, and would love to hear more about how the show changes, because I ain't watching it again. Also, if you haven't seen it yet, highly recommend Stag. It's a Mini Horror Comedy Slasher staring Pat's actor as the main protagonist. When he gets invited to join in a literal Stag Do (British version of a Bachelor Party) in the Scottish Highlands with his sister's fiancé and his mates. They go up on a planned hunting trip trying to Bag a Red Deer, but find themselves being hunted down one by one. it's seriously tense at times and utterly amazing. www.amazon.co.uk/Stag/dp/B01CF2LLQW

I absolutely agree on all accounts! I saw the UK version first and I definitely preferred it to the US. I felt like the US version was overacted and I didn't feel any connection with the characters. I started watching Ghosts US and couldn't get past two episodes before I just started rewatching Ghosts UK again instead. (And it's not just you as a native Brit, I'm from Nebraska and prefer the UK version)

Was going to write something similar, but think you covered it. I think it boils down to what you get used to on TV. I found the US version very saccharin-sweet, like Friends, Bones, .... Assuming a lot of Americans identify with how the Couple reacts. But the 23:32 UK version seemed more believable because I was bought up watching UK TV . I feel this is how a lot of UK people would react realistically and the history of the Ghosts seem like they could be real stories - although stereotyped - not many British people would think it odd for a politician to be so unscrupulous and die in those type of circumstances 🤣 I think we are all likely biased. I couldn't get through more than 2 US episodes, sorry.

The thing I like about the UK version is something you saw as a negative. Yes, the ghosts quarrel about little things but if you have an eternity with each other, it's the little things that will start to become the elephant in the room.

i feel like the UK's Alison is more appealing to me because of her reaction and irritation. Imagining having to live with ten other people all of a sudden, it would suck. I feel like it also makes her relationships with the ghosts more believable since she isn't instantly befriending them. Also, i prefer the UK acting wise.

I think the tone difference is mainly a cultural thing , I’m a big fan of BBC Ghosts, but I find the American version almost unwatchable. Comedy in the US and the UK can be really different and I think cynicism might just gel better with people in the uk. Also half the cast of Ghosts were the cast of a really iconic childrens show , so there all literally icons if you grew up in the 2000s or 2010s

I like both shows pretty much equally. The real difference between them is that they're both made for different audiences. British comedies tend to have a drier wit while American ones tend to favour broader comedy, and British characters often have rougher edges that would get rounded off in the States. They both work in their own ways. And Robin is frikkin' adorable.

That’s super valid. I personally prefer the UK version, but just because it’s the only one I’ve seen and I grew up with the cast. People will always tend to like what they’re used to, it’s a big reason why there would be massive arguments about dub vs. sub in Anime. But I think people definitely have a tendency to really devalue US versions of UK TV. There is a sort of “air of superiority” around it, which sucks, because from what Critter said in her video, I can totally get why someone would prefer the U.S. version, especially if it’s the one they first watched!

I tried watching Ghosts UK, in hope that I would have 2 Ghosts shows to love but I found Ghosts UK to be slow moving, boring, and dreary. So I've watched the entirety of the UK Ghosts, and it's one of my favourite shows ever. I remember when my parents and I watched it for the first time, we kept having to pause because we were laughing so much we couldn't breathe. Plus, I grew up with the Ghosts UK cast, since I religiously watched Horrible Histories as a kid. I think it's kind of impossible to determine which is "better", since aside from the premise, they each have completely different styles of comedy/approach's to the situation, which is exactly what you highlighted. So it's entirely down to personal preference: the pessimism of the UK, or the optimism of the US. I've never watched Ghosts US, and I don't think I ever will, but I can definitely see why you would prefer it. What I will say, is that when it comes to the pessimism of the UK version, I think it helps the characters dynamics. "This is shit and we're all stuck together in this shit", is absolutely true, but it means that the characters are forced to put up with the situation, which leads them to develop closer connections and relationships. Rather than the immediate positivity in the US version, Alison slowly builds relationships with the ghosts, which I really like. They make the best out of a mediocre situation, and all the ghosts show this underlying kindness, connection and appreciation for each other, that aren't initially visible. They're a family that's forced to live together constantly, so of course they're going to get annoyed with each time to time, but they still appreciate each other. I'm obviously biased, but if you're up for it, I would recommend giving the UK version another shot, since it can be very emotional and sweet when it needs to be. Also, in regards to Julian pushing Alison out of the window, yes, it definitely makes him look bad, and it does get brought up again, since he's the reason Alison has to live with seeing ghosts.

This is a fun comparative analysis - thanks for sharing! I've watched both shows and love them both in many of the ways you describe. One big difference in the two shows is that the UK show is filmed in a real house - West Horsley Place, in Surrey. As in the show, it's a 15th century structure with a 17th century facade attached to it. The show was filmed entirely on site - interiors and exteriors. That's probably why it felt claustrophobic and dark, because it's a really old house, not a big, spacious soundstage as in the US Ghosts. The exterior of the US Ghosts mansion is in Canada, and the show's filmed in studio in Montreal. As far as which show I like better, that is so hard to say! They're both great in their own ways. I do feel that the UK version is more clever, but the US version is a little more lighthearted, so I guess whatever you're in the mood for!

Ok so not seen either of theses show so bear with me. The mansion size thing you mentioned, ya even the uk old timey large estates tend not to be that big. Feel from how you described it the UK verion was first and that gives the US version time to rewrite and improve on somethings, with the benefit of hindsight. The lighting and colours again i feel come done to culture. American tv has definitely come off as more " look how big, bright and colorful everything is!". Feel like the ghosts directly trying to kill her and touching her may have been apart of the reason she sees them, but for american verion they saw this was not really important long term and went their own way. The part where UK verion seems to be made up of small annoyances and the US is very " well lets go with it" seems very UK attitude vs US attitude. Infact i feel if you had not mentioned which was which version i would have easily guessed it. Going to say though, i have not seen either and I'm probably not going to. Neither sounds like my thing. But thanks for sharing. It was interesting to here about the 2's differences and similarities.

I really liked them. The UK was a lot tamer in my opinion. Both of them always end with a WTF moment to make turning it off very difficult. As for the Dexter series, having different characters die and/or find out his addiction was an experience. Usually live action typically leaves a bunch of the story out, but not knowing what will happen is why I like that story. Though the Bloodline series is still my favorite saga.

I personally preferred the UK version’s wit. Though I am British. Whilst I liked the conflict of the American version, everything you found largely positive, I found largely negative. Sam I found to be irritating and unbelievable whilst Alison I found to be more relatable and was more invested in. Found Mike and Jay to be equally annoying so meh. Honestly knowing that they only exist to be a ‘what ghost thing?’ Character sucked, I just find it to be an overused ploy in tv. I found the UK version to have better build up and it made me personally laugh harder. I also quite enjoyed Alison’s accident because it was more understandable. She leant out a window and couldn’t see Julian behind her or shoving her out. I guess Sam just missed the large vase that made a noise when it dropped? Tbf the mansion thing seems like a cultural difference, the uk is very old there are plenty of mansions with tight halls and smaller rooms. I felt quite split on the ghosts, I preferred the Captain, Robin Julian and Kitty but I did like Flower and Alberta. I also felt the use of a colonial captain was weird, there being a Native American present and yet that obvious conflict isn’t there seems off. I really liked your take and understood completely but I’m UK all the way

I love both versions. Unfortunately I do not have free access to the last two series of the UK version. I was able to watch the first 3. Now only 2 are available. The ghosts characters and show in general in the UK version definitely have a more “dark” undertone. It “feels” very much like British show. Americans often do not respond well to the same type of undertone. When Americans watch sitcoms they want you to mostly just laugh and “escape” from the normality of their lives. I’m not saying Americans are not ok with more dark situations. Look at some of the situations that occurred in the Golden Girls as an example! HIV scare, LGBT situations, how older people especially woman are often not treated as well, etc! But again…Americans mostly want to just escape their own lives.

Okay so: - Mike is depicted as an idiot because he is and Julian is depicted as an asshole because he is. Julian is literally a tory. - Also, yeah mansions are mostly small hallways so there's more walls to help the house stay up, it's a very Very old house and that's how most of them look lmao - "This is shit and we're stuck here" is my favourite thing, whereas Sam giving herself more work by treating the ghosts as a project really puts me off - Jay getting all the stupid loans and such felt out of character, he'd seemed so level headed before, but Mike idiotically getting the loans feels very in character and funny to me Idk maybe I'm just british lmao Xx

Looking at the rest of this comment section, yeah, defintly seems like a cultural thing. I’m an amarican and I like US Ghosts better. I just feel so much more invested when the chracters seem to have actually grown on one another. The ghosts stop being antagonistic to the livings pretty quick, but both absolutely still cause problems for the others. There’s still conflict, it just feels like it arises from the chracters personal flaws, rather than just animosity. I didn’t get all that far into UK Ghosts, so totally possible I’m mischaracterizing it over all to be fair. Also, I am bided because I’m not just amarican, I’m from the Mid Hudson Valley reigon of New York where the show takes place, so I get a lot of Local specific jump scares to keep me on my toes. It adds charm that I know applies mostly to just me and my friends, lol.

this is actually interesting. in the early 2010s there was a show airing in malta that had a similar premise. Benjamin Sultana dies in a fire while attempting to save a woman that he saw in a window. When he wakes up, he finds out that he is now a ghost. He then meets Donna Amelia ( the woman that he saw in the window) Emmanuel; a man who died in the second world war, Ciccio; the man who crashed into and accidentally killed Emmanuel, Gabel ; a man who died while hiding in a cupboard, Ludovigo; the former owner of the building and his wife Antoinette. Benjamin later finds out that Percival; the son of Ludovigo and Antoinette, burned down the former palace to get insurance money because he was bankrupt. Eventually the group meets some new ghosts and the story goes on. but what makes this show shine is that the ghosts kind of act like begrudging roommates in an appartment block who split themselves evenly as to where they live with the livings. and the livings are also a whole colorful cast. two who stand out are Rosie, a short-tempered angry woman who has to wear the pants in her family cause her husband is a complete wuss who's on her last straw but her and her husband actually do love eachother. and Gladys, an alcoholic who tries to fill the void in her life with different things and she ends up falling for her therapist. the week before she's meant to get married to him he dies via an electric shock and ends up as one of the ghosts and in the final episode of the series Gladys dies and also end up as one of the ghosts leading up to her living it up by having god's assistant falling for her and granting her all the powers she could ever dream of. such a great show but i don't even know if there is an English subbed version of it available anywhere sadly.

I’m an American and I MUCH prefer the English version. It is the original and the American version wouldn’t exist if the English version didn’t. I don’t know how it took you so long to see the English version. I saw it, in the US, long before the American version even was a thought. The English version is much more poignant; you really care about the characters and are invested in their happiness. I’ve seen a couple of episodes of the American version and it just seems like a caricature of the original version. And I love the ending of the English version; instead of beating a dead horse, they brought the show to a satisfying conclusion before it started to get stale.

Oh, and by the way, the English version was filmed in a REAL mansion, so that’s why some of the scenes seemed a bit closed in. You can go on KZbin and get a tour of the mansion they used. I’ll bet the American version uses film sets.

I had no idea they had a UK version.. I love this show. This is one of my favorite shows to watch. Theres an older UK show that I loved to watch back in the day called, "Open All Hours" You 'll have to give it a watch and see what you think.

I've watched both the US version and the UK version. I enjoy them both very much, and because of the slightly different plotlines, enjoy them each as individual shows. I do appreciate the US version more, because as you stated, there's more diversity in ages and eras that the ghosts were born/died and it lends itself to super interesting conversations.

I think with the Uk ghosts, you have to accept the fact they’re unlikable at first. But they do grow and develop over the series as we learn more about them. It feels like a bunch of family members who begin at first loathing each other but then slowly getting to know each other and form strong connections despite their situations rather than just buddy buddy all of a sudden. And personally, Robin is my favourite character. Particularly in the later seasons, you understand his man-out-of-time character whose stuck unable to move on, deeply and prophetically lonely but just has to accept it I don’t personally like the US version because it feels like a comedy Tv series about Ghosts, rather than a Ghost tv series that just so happens to be a comedy.

I think both series reflect both cultures. The US positivity, get up and go, meet the challenges and make a success. The UK with a darker people out of their depth, with no noticeable talent or money. There is an extra dimension to the UK ghosts as many of them are not happy about being dead. Pat’s positivity is only a veneer that frequently slips. Robin is dismissed but is by far the wisest. Humphrey (the headless) is literally and metaphorically a lost soul.

I think you're overlooking the racism the US characters have to deal with - Alberta had to claw her way to the stage and Sassapis has to deal with the colonising force that totally marginalises his culture. He is always at odds with Isaac( "do you hear yourself" when he goes on about "liberty for all"). Britain always ignores their shameful history
@nocturnalcove9736

Sorry Critter but I have to disagree on this one. A lot of your arguments can be easily explained. For the UK ghosts, imagine being dead for hundreds to thousands of years, trapped in mansion you can't leave with the same people? In the end, you would just bicker about pointless crap if you haven't gone insane. Fanny constantly reliving her death is so normal to them that they don't even mention it and it's something that doesn't need a plot for. The US version is waaaaay too clean. Everyone looks like they're wearing costumes for a play than a show. The mansion doesn't look like it'll fall apart. Everyone is overacting, which I get to a degree. The ghosts will want a new face but the acting. My god it's too much. No realism. No one is grounded. It's like they're scared of you getting bored. Plus why does this twenty minute per episode show need adverts?!
@thejudgmentalcritter6584
@thejudgmentalcritter6584 Ай бұрын
I'm confused by your last sentence? What do you mean "why does this twenty minute per episode show need adverts"? Are you asking why commercials air in the middle of the episodes? If that is what you're asking, it's not really a thing any of us has any control over, including the show creators. The broadcast networks are required to air commercials throughout the middle of every show, because the more commercials run, the more money they make. and they want to make as much money as possible. It's required to air 15 minutes worth of ads for every hour, so rather than have it all in 1 long 15 minute chunk between episodes, they chop it throughout the episodes in shorter chunks.
@fazzieman674
@fazzieman674 17 күн бұрын
@@thejudgmentalcritter6584 I think that is part of the issue as Ghosts UK is made for the BBC which doesn't have the need for the ads so has 30 minutes. From my understanding that meant when the first 2 seasons were shown on CBS as cover for the writer's strike Ghosts UK was cut to bits so changing the flow. Half the inneuendo was cut (which are half the jokes - especially when linked to Fanny), the reactions cut shorter and hell they even pixelated horse poo. Even showing Mike is very insecure regarding to why Alison is with him is cut down, which explains why he buys into the plans for the house. Also your bit in the first episode after Sam/Alison went to the hospital and the ghosts being annoyed with Fanny's death compared to the ghosts' reminiscing about their families. For me the US part felt forced compared to the UK, not warm and fuzzy to make me warm to the ghosts. The Ghosts sitting talking about their families I couldn't help think they've been together for years seen lots of people come, go and die and now they talk about this with each other, none of them went 'yes you have told me this multiple times before'? In the UK yes it is more horror based but more realistic and trusts people are going to stick around to get to know the ghosts individually rather than do 'here they are people moment' - the audience know the ghost know Juilian doesn't think outside himself (he started a war to get out of crisis) so the warm and fuzzy and believing it is a complete accident isn't going to happen. They have been listening to Fanny scream for years at some point it would be less 'poor Fanny' and more 'oh my god just find someway to deal with it' The UK one seems more like a family that put up with each other rather than the housemates in the US. There is also the thing with the mansions - the US show is obviously a set (which is fine), where the UK is not it is an actual mansion. but there is a cultural difference in how they were built is also obvious. The US purposely built mansions, with a set layout designed to impress but the UK as shown that the headless ghost is the first one in the house (Robin was always on the land) they built great houses and added on. And so yes you can be in a UK mansion and it be very claustrophobic all at the same time as well as really run down

People say that US Ghosts is based on UK Ghosts and that the UK version is the original. But! When I was a teenager, there was a kid's show/sitcom called Booh! Which pretty much follows the same concept, with a few minor differences. For example, the MC is not a couple, but a real estate agent trying to sell the property. While the ghosts scare away potential buyers. This was mid 00's. That was the OG

“Well those limeys can wipe their eyes with crumpets…” - Trevor in a British accent. The US version SLAPS and although I haven’t seen the UK version it does not give me good vibes. The show seems so bland as if everyone is depressed while the US version deals with heavy topics but can still make you laugh (or blush being in some scenes). I understand they are ghosts and supposed to by scary like “OOOO DEAD PEOPLE SO SPOOKY” but it just doesn’t seem appealing for a 4 season show. Again I have not seen the UK version so I am unsure if it gets happier but I doubt I could last 5 minutes in the UK versions pilot. All of the characters seem one dimensional and the same person with different clothes. And your right- that ooga booga nonsense did get annoying even from just the clip you showed. Also, for the kind people reading this that prefer the UK version, I don’t mean to bash your show so please don’t be rude to me about this, that would be silly. It’s US version for me. Also I will be talking more about the US version so don’t get confused :) To talk about the characters individually would make this comment a mile long, so I will talk about my favorite 3. Issac, Trevor, and Hetty. Starting with Issac, I love his witty humor and gayness if that’s a word 😭 seeing him and Nigel interact in season 1 was the highlight of the show. His little suit is adorable. His interactions with Sam and Hetty just show how sweet he can be. Also his never ending feud with Hamilton just makes me want to hug him, if I were a ghost that is. Trevor is honestly attractive in a physical and relatable way. I find myself a lot like him, even with the sexual jokes every now and again. Jay and Eric were right, Asher (Trevors actor) has a GREAT jawline. 10/10 character and 11/10 jawline XD Hetty, my favorite woman. Seeing her yell at Sam from time to time, that episode with Freddie as well, just makes me love her. She’s trying to be the mother to Sam that she couldn’t be to her own sons because of her death. And her death, oh my. I won’t spoil it since it was the latest episode but it definitely stirred something inside of me. Anyway, seeing her with Trevor and Issac just made me smile. Although Hetty and Trevor were certainly unexpected. Although I don’t hate it. Anyway I would love to hear others opinions but these are just my takes.

I really love the US version of Ghosts. Many of the complaints about it was that "American comedies are too same-style structured and obvious" but when I watch a comedy, I don't want to put too much thought into it. It should be light, upbeat, and funny. Which I found Ghosts UK to be dreary, nagging, and cluttered. Everyone has their preferences and there are, of course, cultural differences, which is fine, but I prefer the American version. Honestly, I can go several episodes of Ghosts UK without a chuckle, let alone a laugh. Some characters have their moments but Ghosts UK doesn't come off as a comedy to me. Ghosts US may feel "staged" to some, but its a comedy show, we aren't worried about such a high degree of realism - at least I'm not. I like to see the antics and craziness of Ghosts US. Some say that Ghosts US moves too fast while I feel that Ghosts UK moves way too slow and makes me lose focus easily. Just personal differences for different people and different cultures, for sure. But my vote is for Ghosts US - 100%!
