This project is right up my street! You are so productive - thank you. Edit: If you do build this, may I suggest you get the claws a reasonable size then scale from there. I have a similar looking robot produced (I think) for McDonald s. I'll try and dig it out but really its tiny.

I always find it amusing to see how low-budget special effects artists get creative. There's so much off-the-shelf 1950s hardware on those robots, like the electrical insulators on the arms and the perforated sheet metal "neck" (which you can still find in hardware stores). I don't see a reason to build a robot you don't particularly like. I'd say keep the sections you like and get creative with the parts you don't like. You could replace the entire head assembly with something else, (for instance, the head from Star Trek's Nomad). Or find a design from a toy robot, like Robot Commander with the googly eyes. It's interesting to me how many robots of that era used tank treads for a base. I'm not sure if that's a holdover from WWII (making the robot look more like a tank) or whether it was just easier to implement on screen.

This is very cool. I've never seen this movie so now I have to! Whenever I'm looking for things to make details like we see on Gog's head, I go to Hobby Lobby (If you have one in your area). They have a ton of fun little things you can use to make stuff. I hope you make this robot. Now I have to find the movie! 😄

You bringing up the subject of whether or not to do a project makes me want to vent... I just finished a project for a little robot that can draw numbers mechanically and without the need for batteries. Here in my country, there is a real craze for lottery bets. I showed it to several people and it was a huge success, which encouraged me to mass produce it. So I spent hours on the project and managed to optimize costs as much as possible (production, packaging, inserts, etc.). The 3D printing would be done on a printer farm that can produce high volumes at a much lower cost than I could with my home printer. In the end, I ended up with a sales price of approximately US$8.00 (with a very low profit margin). Last week, I went into a convenience store and saw that they had a basic mouse for my computer. I checked the price: US$1.64 (these are values equivalent to the US dollar, since in my country we use the REAL currency (R$). I don't know how they manage to make a mouse cost less than US$2.00, since it is imported from China (including production costs, inputs, packaging, taxes, import tariffs, etc.) and still make a profit! PS.1: Speaking of small parts, I also came across this problem when designing my robot: one of the axles used needed to be very thin (1mm or less in diameter). I ended up choosing to use acupuncture needles, which are extremely thin and resistant. The other axle was not so thin (3.4mm), but since it would be subject to considerable tensile force, if it were made using the 3D process it would end up breaking easily. I ended up choosing to use lollipop sticks because they are made of injected plastic... PS.2: Regarding the design of this specific robot I agree with most of the comments here. Feel free to make your own changes and the end result will certainly be cooler than the original design! PS.3: Sorry for the too long comment...

Cool robot. The head ring antenna reminds me of the one off the futura that they made the batmobile out of the little control box that's clear on his head 3D printed flat recessive maybe maybe just mix up some clear epoxy and feel it look like a clear box I think it would be a cool 3D robot like your other projects some of the stuff on the head you'll have to scratch Built don't like the antennas I always wanted one looks fun like the coil like springs make them with just wire then glue them if you just had the main parts of the robot 3dprint would be fantastic the creativity will be fun making all the little details yourself. Look like fun project bump and go robot or non-functioning would be awesome too.

When I was into RC airplanes some people built scale models that concentrated on accuracy for the purist. Other people built 'stand off scale' models meant to look like the full size aircraft as long as you didn't examine them from up close. I think there were also airplanes called 'fun scale' that were even less exact. I think 'stand off scale' would be good enough for this guy but I'm not a purist. If I were going to design a GOG, I might do a caricature or cartoon version with a bigger head but I like the cartoon look. Those arms in a circular pattern remind me of an old wooden toy. It had chickens in a circular pattern that were attached by strings to a weight in the middle. Moving the whole toy in a circular motion would cause the weight to actuate each chicken so it looked like it was pecking the ground. I'll be watching to see how you decide to go.

I had to laugh at your dialogue about all the dumb or stupid parts! Those stamped metal sheets used in the neck are still available today. Pretty sure I’ve seen one at Home Depot or Ace Hardware. I definitely think you should make one, but also take creative license to deviate from anything dumb. Maybe use Mecanum wheels to be able to move any direction. I know there are smaller versions as some Battlebots have incorporated them.
@Robothut
@Robothut Ай бұрын
Yes, first thing I thought about was the Omni wheels, the only problem is controlling them turn the simple project into a complicated one. Yes, I have seen the same stamped metal at a Lowes a few years back, so it probably still around if anyone want to build a full-scale version.

"you know what" lol !! Some of these 50's robots were cool but some were, well John Travolta said it in Pulp Fiction...."Royal wit Cheese". Having said that though, GOG did exist and it's worth some input to get a screen accurate version, I say go for it.

Why not simplify the dumb stuff. Just give the general feel of the big structures without the details. Kind of how the Remco Lost in Space robot approximated the main big shapes. AKA a REMCO toy version of Gog.
@fredbloggs8072
@fredbloggs8072 Ай бұрын
I was thinking the same. Just include simplified versions of (most of) the accessories with the main 3D printed head & body, rather than gluing additional detailed components to it.They do this a lot with mass-produced toys. Cheaper and less lightly to break off.
