Let's Talk About Lil Nas X..

Lil Nas X is one of the most polarizing pop icons we have seen in the past few years. The "Old Town Road" rapper is consistently shrouded with controversy over every little thing he does. But is it justified? Is it all part of a big marketing ploy? Or does the "controversy" say more about the people that he offends more than the actions themselves..

There's no question that Lil Nas X's haters are massive hypocrites. He's not doing anything that any other rapper/hip-hop/pop artist don't do. He's just the first to be unapologetically gay while he's doing it. He's doing a public service and an inspiration to marginalized people to be yourself, be authentic, and don't try to fit somebody else's mold.

On top of being a marketing genius he also genuinely has good musicianship. I dont think I ever really listened to as many catchy melodies in the same album. Im excited to see whats next. Especially since he's showing how the people that normally say "society is too sensetive you cant joke about anything anymore" are literally throwing fits over his satirical music videos. What does this have to do with making "homophobes mad" everyone who is gay doesn't worship the devil so that's irrelevant.He only does the stuff he does cause he sold his soul and the contract he signed made him have to do this. Well I’m glad that you’re discussing both sides of this argument, I do wanna point out that there is a very large outcry in religious communities about metal music and basically any genre that has what could be conceived as dark symbols and imagery. It’s just not as large as the outcry as it’s been for Nas, simply because those bands and concepts are not as big right now. But there are always churches claiming that anything that doesn’t sound “orderly” in music is deemed a gateway to evil. I can tell you as a Christian, one of the worst struggles of my upbringing was trying to explain to my folks that liking metal music didn’t mean I was going to hell. I personally don’t care about any of this controversy because I think everyone is going batshit crazy over all of it. I think Nas should be mindful of what kids know him for, but it’s not Nas’ job to shield his fans young or not.
@good-tn9sr
@good-tn9sr 2 жыл бұрын
I think it’s partially his responsibility for his young fans. They are young which means they are naive and very impressionable. They’ll somewhat mimic how they see him act especially if they see him as they’re idol. I think more Christian’s nowadays care about the lyrics, especially since we have Christian metal, rap, hip hop, etc. now.

@6:22 I have to disagree on the outcry of heavy metal bands with Satanic imagery. The late 80s and 90s were highlighted by “satanic panic” and there were whole movements trying to censor these bands because parents thought they were encouraging kids to perform Satanic rituals. Any kid who liked that kind of music back in the day were considered freaks, outcasts, etc. Most famously I think is the West Memphis 3 case, especially Damien Echols being the ringleader and accused of murdering three boys in a satanic ritual because he liked heavy metal. These guys spent decades in prison for a crime they didn’t commit.

Lil Nas X to me kinda just cemented a shift in the music industry. For most of my life, I got the impression that artists pick one over arching genre to stay in, with the most diversity of their music being sub genres (my notable example would be the rock genre. Many artist dont leave THAT label, but may shift around from metal, hard rock, alternative, and usually the career ender would be pop rock or going "full pop"). Lil Nas X, even though I can't vibe with his music, is still kinda inspiring. He makes the music he wants to. Him and artist before him like the Gorillaz started changing the idea that an artist is locked into a genre and should only be focused on that kind of music to cater to one group of fans. And on top of that he shows his dedication with the intensity of his music videos. They are full budget, well recorded videos. Not just lyric videos to push the song out. Ultimately, I'm just glad the dude is doing what he wants to. That's what matters in the end.

I don’t remember exactly when I followed him, but it had to be 3-4 months before he first dropped old town road. He would just post videos of him sitting at his desk at home jamming to his own hip hop tracks. The track that first caught my attention was Banzup, and then I watched a few other posts and really dug his sound. “Right now I still live w my mom and my dad but I’ll skeet on your face in their basement. See I fw crackers and Haitians.” Etc. I really thought he had a great flow and was honestly pretty witty/creative with his lyrics. Really seemed like a dude just having fun with it, and that’s something I feel like we don’t see much today in rap. I think he produced a lot too. Since he blew up, all that has been wiped from the internet by his label. Can’t knock him for getting his money and cementing his place in history, but having really dug his “traditional” rap music before the old town road madness, I can’t help but wish he didn’t “sell out.” That being said, if he was not being true to who he is at that point, then it’s unfair of me to wish he stuck to what I liked. Regardless, I truly think it’s important to acknowledge his talent. People get distracted by the “loud” stuff outside just the music itself. Even back then, I thought he had the talent to be THE rapper that would bring fun back to the genre
