Thanks Dylan! i've never owned a maranta even though i think the foliage is really nice. suggestion, are you open to showing the space behind the camera? it would be nice to see the entirety of your plant room.

I’ve only tried Maranta once, and it died quickly - in retrospect I probably wasn’t watering it enough. But then I found out about the humidity and the spider mites, so rather than try again, I’ve decided to just admire them from afar. 😅 That’s a gorgeous one you have there, though!

Thank you! I just learned about the spider mites through these comments. As far as watering goes, I'm tempted just to water it double what I have been and see what happens.

Hi Dylan! Yes, let's talk about Maranta... I am currently in a battle with the dreaded spider mites, and so far my one and only casualty has been my Maranta Leuconeura, (Rabbit's Foot), although my Stromanthe Triostar is in the ER. And unfortunately, more than half of my Calatheas and several of my Alocasias are affected. 😢😢😢
@banesbotanicals12877 ай бұрын
No!! That's a lot of plants to have sick at once. I'm sorry! If anyone can battle them back, it's you!

I always wanted the lemon lime maranta till I saw the one you have, Dylan. What a stunner she is! My humidifier is set at 40% so best not to have a maranta here. I'll just admire yours and others I occasionally see.

Thank you! I've definitely had to baby it, and I could also do better. I'm still figuring out the ideal setup for my place, as far as the plants go. Somehow, I keep ending up in houses with terrible lighting.
@Gee-xb7rt7 ай бұрын
If the light is too low they will let you know and etiolate. They are also one of the plants that really hate heat, I always learn that the hard way, put them out and everything is fine until highs in the 90s roll around.

I now wonder if my rattlesnake calathea bit the dust because of being close to a warm east window with blinds closed. It was just a 3" plastic potted plant and I watered her twice weekly as well. Every week it seemed to get more and more brown and eventually after a month old I bid her farewell to plant heaven :((

The list of things NOT to do with prayer plants is much longer than the list of things you CAN do 🤣 Bonus points for "etiolate"

Wow! That is beautiful! I am going to have to add that to my collection of "prayer plants". Right now we have the red and lemon lime variety as well as a 12+ year old rattlesnake calathea that to this day still startles me when it unfolds and folds.
@jackiewhitney50317 ай бұрын
Please share your tips on your rattlesnake calathea. I had a 3' plastic pot for a month and she died. She was in an east window with indirect bright light, watered her twice weekly, no pests and then after being in that location I noticed more browning shiveling up leaves every week and before I knew it she was gone. I never bought another one but I love the looks of them.

@@jackiewhitney5031 Good morning. I will say, it took a little time to get the balance right with the watering and light. Firstly, it may have been over watered. The thing that was hard with the couple varieties we have is the leaves look the same if they're over or under watered. We use a moisture meter and that really helps. We water maybe once a week, maybe every other depending on how the soil feels, or the meter (if you have one), is reading. The lighting, too is kinda the same that we've noticed. We've had ours in south and east window exposures. The trick, we've found, is having them a good 3-5 feet away from the window. They seem to respond much better, at least in our case. Each of our calathea varieties have done far better a little bit further away from the window, rather than closer to it. Also, water quality and fertilizer might be an issue. I never used to check or care about it. Now, though, I have noticed some don't do so well with regular fertilizer, or as often. We try not to fertilize the rattlesnake or the orbifolia too often. I hope that helps some what. Once you find that spot and balance, they're so beautiful. (Transplanting, Calatheas. Wait until they absolutely need it. They are sensitive to re-potting, we've found).
@jackiewhitney50317 ай бұрын
@@j.b.abraham4175 Thank you for responding. After thoroughly reading all the signs of my demise I really resonated with it getting too much intense light because it was very close to the window and all the radiant heat was making her mad. I, too have a moisture meter and it registered needing water twice weekly. The water is whole house R/O water so I ruled that out as well. I do only have my humidifier on fall/winter at 40% and like I mentioned I only had her a short month in a 3" pot and the potting soil possibly wasn't the best either but I knew they don't like repotting as well. I should have moved her around 5' away from the hot window to the floor.
@j.b.abraham41757 ай бұрын
@@jackiewhitney5031 Oh, yeah. Possibly is what was the cause it sounded like. Still, I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you try again with another one. Mine when I got it was a small one, and ours even responded really well to artificial LED grow lights when we had a really small place and hardly any windows. The only thing about the transplant part was dividing it for smaller plants. It will work, but man, we did one too many times on ours and I thought we killed it. It took literally three months before any new growth began again.

They are gorgeous butvery susceptible to spidermites ! One should always treat them after bringing them home from the nursery! I bought one last year and have been battling them ( the mites not the maranta) ever since , now trying with biological pest control.

Good to know! I didn't realize they got spider mites so easily. Most of my mite issues have been with plants in the Aralia family (Schefflera, Hedera, Fatsia, etc.)
