I have too many of these, including the platinum mist, most of them are very nice easy plants, though they do love their water. My favorite is a very small one that Tom Croat found and named after the owner of Ecuagenera, S. Ivanportillae, I think its fairly much exclusive through them but grows as easily as any other, has almost black leaves that are more rounded, when it flowers the white against the dark is quite striking. It is small, I have kept it in the same 6" pot for years. Would be one of the plants I would save in case of fire.

It sounds fairly rare. I'd never even heard of it. The leaves look thicker and more rigid, though that may have just been the picture. I get fed up with Spathiphyllum in general just because the leaves seem to brown so easily, but they are a beautiful plant!

@@banesbotanicals1287 yeah, the leaves are thicker and its not as droopy, but I'm not going to question Tom Croat's taxonomy, lol. I don't have the problems with brown tips because I filter water.

Hi Dylan!... Well, Spathiphyllums seem to bring me every emotion EXCEPT peace (lol). I've HAD soo many of them (10-15). I've purchased them and they've been given to me as gifts. I've attempted to grow them in high light, medium light and low light. I've tried at home and at work because that's 2 different environments with different lighting. I've tried to grow them in several different substrates: water, sphagnum, soil, perlite, coco coir, and even lava rock. I've given them high humidity to no humidity. And with all that, they give me maybe 2 to 3 weeks of beauty. After that, the blooms die, the leaves wilt, and they become trash. A couple have lasted a little longer, but never had one for more than 3 to 4 months. I was told that it's probably because they had roots but no rhizome. I don't know. I'm done...

Honestly I've had similar luck with them, so don't feel bad! They need a decent amount of attention, and I guess I've never been interested enough in them to give them the love they need. They are beautiful plants, but maybe more beautiful in someone else's house besides ours!

I spend maybe more time than I should around the clearance rack in my Lowe's than is good for me, and a few months ago I found a peace lily that had almost turned into paper. The guy at the register couldn't read the tag and told me to just take it for free. I stuck it in a bucket of water and it bounced back in like a week. These things are the biggest drama queens when they dry out.

They can be a good teacher in consistent watering as well. They can be kind of a gateway plant into the more thirsty side of our water scale (ferns, carnivorous, etc.) It's amazing how some plants can come back like that.

I have two Dominos - well, I bought one and divided it. I’m growing each one in different media and different lighting conditions. After 10 years or so, the one under lights in semi-hydro is VERY wide, but rarely blooms. The one in natural light grows very slowly but blooms regularly. Not sure what that means but it’s interesting 😂 Depending on your growth medium, this is the rare plant that can survive sitting in water. In fact on multiple occasions I’ve gone on vacation for a week and just put the spaths in a tray with three inches or so of water and they came out of it happier than some of the succulents I just let go dry for a week. Go figure!

That's crazy! I wonder if it could sit in water like that long term, like carnivorous plants do. I'd be nervous to try it, unless it was with a smaller cheaper plant, lol.

@@banesbotanicals1287 They apparently grow on riverbanks in the wild so they’re evolved to survive regular floods. I ran across a forum posting once from someone who had experimented with planting som spaths in basically a tub of mud, using an aquarium pump and filter to keep a few inches of water on top circulating, and from the pictures he posted they loved it. He was using cheap spaths, though, and iirc had the pump lying around, so he didn’t recommend it as a general culture 😂

@@user-yf1rx4cv7m Still, it's fun doing experiments like that just to see what happens. It makes you wonder if he couldn't set up an environment like that with plants who thrive in those conditions. A couple species of Sagittaria comes to mind, which live in the shallow part of ponds. It may not be practical, but it might be fun 😆

There's a dark leafed peace lily that grows on the banks of some rivers I've been to where I live, they have an ivory, nicely scented bloom, don't know the variety though, they thrive in the dappled light from the canopy created by the towering bamboo and other trees.

@banesbotanicals1287 yes they do, because they are in their natural habitat, i love them, even when it's just the foliage, and the plants are not in flower.

…or put it in a self watering pot…. I bought a Spathiphyllum Ivanportillae. It has very dark leaves. It took me the longest time to figure that plant out! I watered it like a regular peace lily and it didn’t like that. I let it dry some and it didn’t like that. Now, every few days, when I think about it, I’ll put a “spit of water” on it (less than a quarter of a cup). The plant is a lot happier. Go figure….

They're not lilies at all, if that makes you feel better about saying it lol. I got one over the Summer, that I should go check soon, it's in a dim corner next to a West window so I keep forgetting I have it. The leaves are not at all what I imagined, they're very delicate almost like silk. The leaves on yours remind me of Spanish lavender. Mine is just in a plastic pot, but ceramic is ideal. I prefer something heavier because that keeps the temperature more consistent, so we'll see how we do over the Winter.

It is a little ironic calling it a lily, when actual lilies are really elaborate, and the perfect specimen to use when explaining the parts of a flower, lol. We'll see how long mine lasts.

Can you make video about caladium ?
@banesbotanicals1287
@banesbotanicals1287 2 ай бұрын
I'll add Caladium to my list! After I finish the alphabet list I'm working on, I'll go back and hit a some of the others I skipped the first time around. As far as care goes, it's similar to Anthurium. Medium-bright light, consistent watering so that it never dries out, and it'll need ample humidity, through a pebble tray or humidifier. It'll also enter a dormant phase in the winter time where it'll lose leaves indoors, so just remember to water less during that period. Hope this helps!
