Once again, "Americans long thought that nature could take care of itself--or that if it did not, the consequences were someone else's problem. It will take at least 72 hours before FEMA can get into action. Put an emergency it together that has emergency food and water, bring bedding , utensils, pots and pans. Keep your fuel tank at least half full, have enough medication until help shows up. A plan for how family can reconnect if they are scattered will help. Planning for a fire is planning for other emergencies like floods, storms and earthquakes.

The attitude of 'let the Darwin Awards commence' feels right. But it's not a solution, because there's only one planet. If they burn, we burn. It's not like we can abandon ship and leave them here to face the fire they claim isn't burning. Sadly, they're frogs willing to die believing nothing is happening. That soon the pot will grow cold. We have to show them enough to change more minds. Florida is flooding right now, with more expected. But deniers just stand in the water and say "This too shall pass." and smile their knowing, idiotic smile. We're a species that insists on juggling life on a high wire.🙄

Ruidoso. Some of the most beautiful country anywhere. People in the southwest need to start thinking. Loose chains behind cars, give off sparks. A hundred potential fires sparking out behind you and you never think about it or look back. The tire on your trailer goes flat. Sparks flying. You lose a rim and a tire, but, again,a thousand little sparks fly out behind you. A thousand potential fires you may know nothing about. A camp fire you”thought” you put out. A cigarette butt thrown out of your car window. A broken muffler. Any small thing you may not have thought about in the past, it’s time to think about them now. Tinder dry is tinder dry. ANY SPARK!!!! ANY SMALL SPARK can spell serious, deadly trouble. Think first. Don’t take chances with your neighbors lives or lively hoods. Don’t take chances with your own!!! Be smart. Stay alive.

Cal-Fire says 95% of all fires are caused by humans and 100% are preventable. Don't shoot your dam guns into dry brush, don't throw lit cigarettes out of car windows, don't burn home trash on a windy day (or at all during the summer). Watch for sparks from chain saws and weed eaters, have water near you when you use these kinds of tools. Love your neighbours by using a little common sense.

It used to be that we all tended to listen to the one or two main local radio stations, and any local warnings would be aired regularly as needed. Now people use such an international diversity of media it's inevitable that local warnings are not given or heard... As an Aussie it still infuriates me that people are ignorant of warnings for days leading up to an event. Ultimately being locally aware and fully prepared is the responsibility of every individual - it could mean the difference between surviving or not...

Tubbs fire Survivor here. Listen to what Beau has to say. The night of the Tubbs fire my daughter could smell the smoke and heard the high winds and turned on the police scanner on her phone. For two hours she listened as the fire ripped across Napa and came up the backside on the east edge of Sonoma County then she turn to me and said we're packing, we're going now. The fire was racing down the ridge 20 miles from us and by the time we had our stuff together which was only a few minutes it had jumped 101 and was racing for our back door. I will never forget that night standing on the driveway wrapped in smoke and ash as big as pennies flying all around us in 60 mile an hour winds created by the fire storm. We left. Two hours later the notice went out to evacuate, Coffee Park was already up in flames, they were a quarter of a mile around the corner from us. We were lucky the fire missed us though it did branch around us on three sides and our house was saved, so to our lives. A lot of mistakes was made in 2017 with the first fire. We now have multiple volunteer and government system set up working together in our community. We have a long standing Facebook page run by volunteers from the local radio station to post updates during fire season. We also have an app called Watch Duty created by a couple of programmers here in our county. It is our lifeline to air quality, fire perimeters, moment by moment updates, maps and everything else we need including evacuation zones. The last few times that we've had to evacuate, we have watched as 10,000 sometimes hundreds of thousands of residence in our community quietly, orderly, and steadily evacuating in shifts. It does work but you have to set it up and you have to have volunteers and you have to have people in your community and your government willing to put this together, willing to take criticism, willing to work with those who are experienced and knowledgeable. We are not perfect, we make mistakes, and are still learning. If Watch Duty does not serve your area, because I'm not sure to the extent to which it expands, find an app that does or develop one that is like Watch Duty. It is a free app that takes donations so that everybody can use it. It saves community, and it saves property and livestock. But mostly it saves lives. ❤

6/19/2024: 20,000 acres, 2 official deaths, at least 1200 structures. This fire started at 9 am last Monday. The first evacuation call occurred middle of the afternoon so people had begun to leave just not everybody but as the afternoon went on different sections of town were called to evacuate just not everybody. It was early evening when the full evacuation was called and that’s when everybody left. That’s when it completely backed up. There was only one route open to evacuate and that was to the east to Roswell, 70 miles away. The fires are still burning. There’ve been more evacuations further east due to the Salt fire. Ruidoso is not yet open. People are still in shelters. I live in NM and owned a small cabin in Ruidoso for 18 years that we sold in 2019. I still feel connected to the community. Thanks for the mention, Beau.

2:13 Leaving Paradise CA at 8:30 am on the day of the fire took 3 hours instead of 15 minutes. People made their own decisions to leave because the evac alerts couldn't go out faster than the fire was moving. 😢 I made my choice when the string of ambulances evacuating the hospital came down my road. Don't wait.

@@leperpens We got a bit of a break this year and last year due to rain combined with natural fire breaks from prior fires. But its a cycle. Rain brings higher fuel loads in later years. Previous burn areas see new growth, recipe for large fires, then the cycle repeats. There were a quite a number of bad years prior where the season basically didn't end and smoke from huge fires made it all the way to the east coast. In anycase, for this seasons the expectation is that things will get worse later in the summer (when California traditionally heats up). June is still a bit early... June, aka "June Gloom", still gets a lot of overnight cooling that helps knock-down early-season fires. The heat domes in other parts of the country this year have been a lucky break for the west-coast in general, and basically forced the evening/overnight air-conditioner called "The Pacific Ocean" into full operation. It won't last, though. -Matt

Thank you for covering this. We live to the west in the valley. Ruidoso is a regional escape from the summer heat. This is devastating for the community, not just the obvious destruction, (which from what I understand is far worse than the numbers you mentioned, there’s 2 fires right next to each other, the stats are being stated separately), and loss of life, but also for the future which relies on tourism, especially this time of year. This will be a real economic hardship for many years to come. New Mexicans and even people from other states have done amazing work helping the community, people with horse trailers hooked up and went to get the horses out of Ruidoso Downs, numerous offered up everything from places to care for livestock, dogs, cat, families, places to park RV’s with hookup and water, others went in to rescue dogs and other pets when the owners had to flee and couldn’t bring them. The beauty of humanity is shining through the darkest of days. Thankfully we (including Ruidoso) got some rain today. The winds are roaring, as I type this we’re at 47 mph winds, so hard to say how much the rain will help with the fires, but it sure beats windy with no rain. We are always ready to bug out because of the risk of rapidly spreading wildfires. There’s only one road out of our community, we have to drive 5 miles down that road before we have options. We keep our RV as ready as we reasonably can at all times, spare gas for the truck, 5 gallon jugs of water lined up and ready, a weeks worth of easy prep food, everything the dogs need and a box of documents and essential items always ready to grab. If there’s a fire we want to ‘get out of dodge’ before things get hairy. Wildfires are no joke, there’s a reason we say “spreads like wildfire”. Thank you again for covering this.

The problem with not waiting for an evacuation message is that america is a country where businesses will regularly attempt to stay open and actively fight evacuation efforts. People in other countries are well aware of stories of people being asked to work during hurricanes and other non-sense. Every time there's an evacuation, people share completely bonkers messages from employers saying that they'll discipline workers who do not show up on time because they feel that employees have been given enough advanced notice to plan around inconveiences.
