I think the big thing with regard to WhatsApp/Telegram, etc, is that in Europe the cost of SMS was very high. The high cost of SMS drove the adoption of alternatives faster than in the US as in the US although SMS was expensive to us it was not the same as overseas. So, in the US we kept using SMS/MMS but other countries adopted alternatives a long time ago for this reason.

Apple is two laps ahead and still accelerating, but the finish line is nowhere in view. (And most of the other racers are still parked in design.)

I don't think that RCS can fully SMS, since it requires a data connection/wifi. SMS will always exist in case your phone loses its data connection. But it will certainly soon become the standard protocol for messaging to support chat features

Re: the green vs blue bubble battle, people tend to forget that the original colour was green cause iMessage didn’t exist till iOS 5. Apple made iMessage bubbles blue simply to differentiate them from regular SMS/MMS especially since carriers used to charge per text. I kinda think Apple wants to wait until RCS can support encrypted group chats before supporting it cause as of right now, only 1:1 chats can enjoy that feature Also, if they add support for RCS (which I hope they do), would they make that another colour?
@VMYeahVN
@VMYeahVN 2 жыл бұрын
"Also, if they add support for RCS (which I hope they do), would they make that another colour?" Honestly, they could/should if that helps them want to support it. That way the RCS features get supported, but iPhone users can still have their goofy superiority complex over Android users having a different colored bubble lol (assuming part of the reason Apple hasn't supported RCS yet is cause they don't want to lose the social pressure aspect of the lock in iMessage creates). I think you are onto something with them wanting to wait till RCS supports group chat encryption though, that could be a potential feature based reason they'd hold back on supporting it. I mean they even could still have the bubble be green, just then Green would be for RCS, MMS, and SMS all together. They don't really need to make RCS purple or something like that.
@SarveshBheekhun
@SarveshBheekhun 2 жыл бұрын
@@VMYeahVN To be honest, I don’t really think it’s about the superiority complex. I mean, I’m sure they’re very happy about the situation in the US and have no incentive to change that but the US is an outlier. The way I think about it is, whenever they’ll want to bring RCS support to the iPhone, they’ll want to differentiate it from regular SMS/MMS as well as iMessage simply because the feature sets are different. As of right now, when iMessage fails and the text falls back to SMS, it is very clear what happens when the bubble turns green. Since RCS also falls back to SMS, keeping both the same colour could get confusing really quickly since people won’t know when they’re using RCS and when it’s just regular SMS. Also, I have no idea how they’re going to support group chats using all 3 services in one app. It’s going to be much easier for Google for eg. cause they only need to support RCS and fall back to SMS (kinda like iOS Messages works right now). For Apple, I don’t think they’re going to launch a separate app for RCS and juggling between 3 messaging services in the same app will get confusing for a lot of people.

The green vs blue bubble is a thing for high school kids. My daughter had this issue, and it wasn't so much bullying as being excluded. With iMessage you can add people to a group chat without re-creating the group message. If one kid was added to the friend group later and they had an android phone, they didn't want to create a whole new text string just to add one person. She had to find out about plans from a friend who would forward the message to her...so yeah it is an issue, kids just not wanting to deal with all the incompatibles of it.

Crazy that me and my friend haven't had any of these isssues on the Nov update. The one thing I agree with is the I do wish the fingerprint was a bit quicker when compared to the older rear finger print sensors. I can't compare it to other onscreen sensors because this is the first phone I own with a onscreen sensor. I rely on the camera every day since I take tons of pictures and videos of my 5 and 7 year old + my dog playing around and I haven't experience slowness. In fact I haven't experience network issues either (Google Fi), but I hope the December update resolves the issues others are having.

This was an interesting take about the Pixel 6 pro. As a P6p user myself who switched from the S21U I can attest to having the exact opposite issue. My S21U experience was SUPER BUGGY while my P6p experience has been miles better in comparison. I cannot emphasize just how much better the camera experience is on the P6p vs the S21U! Aside from the software being biggy as heck and my shutter button being duplicated off-center on top of the centered button that's already there, the shutter speed and autofocus are complete trash level on the S21U vs the Pixel. I can launch, focus and take 2 pictures before my S21U has even finished hunting for focus. I can also say that my battery life is 2hr better than the S21U gets. My SOT on the pixel is consistently 14hrs while the S21U is 11-12 with battery saver on. The only thing I miss is when it's cold outside and my S21U would get so hot from taking pictures and videos that it would make a great hand warmer, sadly the pixel doesn't heat up like that to be as useful.

The iMessage thing particularly annoys me personally. I am an Android guy. I recently got an iPhone 13pro just to see what the other side is like (spoiler: I'm very unimpressed). When I had Android I would get excluded out of group chats and plans simply because I had an Android. Now that I have an iPhone all of a sudden I got like 10 different group chats to manage now. I'm definitely going back to Android with the s22 ultra. But I'm also reevaluating my friends. If they were willing to exclude me from their plans simply because I didn’t have certain phone then I cant call them a friend. There’s way too much toxic behavior that is involved with owning an iPhone. Combined with the closed-in operating system an ecosystem I just feel really gross using this phone. That’s the only way I can describe it

1:00:36 The R9 290X was actually a very good card when released compared to the GTX 780... After they they started slipping away somewhat, but the R9 Fury X was actually a decent card, although slightly slower than the top GTX 980Ti. With the Vega series AMD couldn't match the GTX 1080Ti, consumed a lot more power and had supply issues. With the 5xxx series they lacked an high end card, for sure. But the R9 6800XT is actually very competitive with the RTX 3080 (is actually faster, if I recall correctly, and it's probably one of the reasons Nvidia even bothered releasing the RTX 3080 12 GB, which has a different memory and core configuration compared to the 10GB although they have the same name). And the 6900XT is a very good card, slightly slower than the 3090 on most occasions, but sometimes faster and on average less power hungry... some people believe that the RTX 3080 12GB and the RTX 3090Ti exist only to get clear of the 6800XT and 6900XT card. And on the laptop side, the 6800M GPU was actually a very good card IMHO, probably better than the RTX 3080 mobile in terms of efficiency (in the past, with R9 300 and Vega cards AMD was more power hungry than Nvidia, but this time with RX 6000 and RTX 3000 is the other way around). Don't dismiss AMD cards this time... In terms of pure performance, AMD is on part at the moment. Unfortunately, they are behind on some features like ray tracing and DLSS, of which they have their own flavour (kinda) but less polished or less performant.

IDK if it is just me but in my country, you have per SMS you send, so using the default app to message especially for group chats would be unrealistically expensive. Messaging in messaging apps on the other hand uses your wifi or ur mobile data - something you already paid for. People don't even use the default phone app for calls they use WhatsApp/Telegram. Because currier companies basically overcharge for everything. iMessage works like the other messaging apps when everyone is using iPhone.But everyone already got into better operation no one cares about it.

My phone Samsung Note 20, was eleven year iPhone only user. In 2020 I switched to Android, yes I experienced the video issue. Late 2020 or early 2021 Samsung, maybe Google as well, fixed that issue, now I am not having any issue sending/receiving quality videos to Android and iPhone. As for Android default messaging app, recall 2021 Google included in their OS Google Messages which is RCS. It is now the default messaging app for all new Android phones. Yes, carriers can include their own messaging app as well, but Google made Android's Google Messages the default messaging app for all new Android phones, it is built in their OS the same as Apple Message is on iPhone.

Maybe it's because I'm an older millennial (born in '86) but I have almost zero interest in read receipts. When I send a text I still feel like I'm sending a message in the same way of using AIM back in the day or sending a physical letter through the post office which is to say that I won't know that they've read it unless they respond. If they choose not to respond and leave me hanging then it is what it is and there's probably a reason. No one is obligated to respond to every message as they're recieved unlike a phone conversation. I feel like letting me know that I'm being ignored is more annoying to me than not knowing. But I feel like this is different based on the individual and that's why I like that it's on option I can turn off and on through my iPhone's settings. I can see why someone who's had read receipts their whole life wouldn't wanna give them up. I'd rather give someone the option to ignore me without letting me know. It sounds rude but sometimes we really just don't wanna interact with people and that should be respected.

For example, here in India it's difficult to get people(esp older generation and non tech savvy folk) to switch from watsapp to signal/telegram(mainly because of the possible data concerns because of meta) as most of the people are pretty much used to using the former and just dont want to move to another application.

WOW, I was always wondering what the whole USA messaging thing was about, I had no idea it was so severe and weird, with chat functionality suffering if someone with an Android phone is added and everything. That is insane and I can definitely see how easily that can lead to bullying among kids...

I use Pixel 3 XL. It was a really good phone at the time of its release and now its just full of bugs. Honestly, sometimes the bugs get me extremely frustrating that I just want to throw it out of the window. I always had been one of those geeks who tries out the beta version and try out dozen of stuff and gives technical feedbacks until June, 2021, when I installed the Android beta 12, which didn't have anything working at the time. I was going to a job interview and had to have an access to my gmail, but even the gmail wasn't even working properly. So I had to go back to the previous version and thats how I lost all my data. And when I explained everything to the customer service representive hoping she would take this feedback but she hang up on me. So yeah, that was basically the end of my enthusiasm with Google Pixel. Now it still has so many bugs, especially while driving when I am going back and forth between Google Map and audio applications. I'm sorry Google, I was an avid fan and supporter for the last 3 years, now my hope is dead. My next phone will be iPhone. Pixel sucks!

In regards to the frame rate drop issues, I've noticed that it's not completely random. I have the Pro and I noticed that after wirelessly charging it, whether on the new pixel stand or any other wireless charger, the frame rate will drop to around 60 and won't go back unless you restart the phone. Don't know if maybe you've also been wirelessly charging your pixel 6 Pro but I feel that's the cause of the bug.

The android green bubbles are strictly physiological. They totally did some R&D on which green sets some people off. Cause the SMS color definitely changed when iMessage rolled out.

One interesting thing that was brought to my attention about the green messages on iPhone is that it is your own messages that are blue or green. Not sure what that means but I feel like there is some message there for apple to be sayong

It’s to inform you if you sent a text message or iMessage to the person. There’s no hidden messages. It’s just letting you know what you sent. Samsung default is the same way. The receiving message is white and the sending is blue

Yes for science. With water and liquid. But for people not so much. You’re right about the 0-100 which is why the weather system generally uses 0-100 in F. Instead of a -17.7 to 38° C range. That’s not as easy to wrap your head around

This is such an interesting discussion and so bizarre to me coming from Australia as a 27 year old. 95% of the people I message, we all use Facebook Messenger to communicate (as it is technically speaking the best messaging service out there). There's a decent population of Asian Australians who use WhatsApp as their default and very few I know who use iMessage group messages or at least persist on making those groups happen. Everyone gets on fine communicating through third party apps like Messenger and WhatsApp and this is with majority of my friends owning iPhones (though I do use an Android). I wonder how 'American cultural' this is or is it just a reflection of Marques and Andrew's circles..

One issue I'm super curious to know if anyone else had come across is the screen itself has movement / play by the notch. If you tap around the notch you would hear a click it a tick. The screen isn't flush with the internals and has movement.

Andrew, I've had the same issue with my Pixel 3. If the squeeze to activate the assistant was on, the assistant always gets triggered especially when tipping the phone to an angle. It's ridiculous, Google couldn't even help me, said there was no issue.

Why does everyone say the carriers have to adopt this. The major carriers have already said future devices will default with Google/Android Messages. Verizon has also stated RCS will be added to their app.. I believe the same is for Samsung.

The most confusing part about M1 comparisons have to be that these companies are trying to be efficient, but lots of work loads won’t even function on Mac, especially with dropped Bootcamp support. So cool, intel or amd makes something new and more efficient, maybe even better. But if you need something like FCP, then you’ll never go to a newer intel if apple actually prevents intel from making a max moving forward.

The really frustrating thing about messaging apps on iPhone is you can't switch your default from iMessage. Like on Android you have Signal handle Signal messages and SMS messages. On iPhone you're stuck with having to use two apps which is frustrating.
