Tis true. Blowpipe is one of the worst examples of osrs powercreep, it really is op. Cheap as fuck, easy as fuck to get, insanely high upgrade to fucking everything. You just blowpipe every god damn monster except niche monsters where a c'bow works better. The blowpipe honestly was a horrible update. Didn't agree with it at the time, and even now when I use it all the time too I still stand by the assessment that it was terrible for range.

I have to disagree with your definition. Power creep is not just any update that adds more power. Power creep is when an update replaces an existing power, making it irrelevant. Armadyl crossbow has not become irrelevant, sure the blowpipe has more dps but it uses darts, which can't be enchanted. The blowpipe did not taker over the niche uses for the crossbow, even if it overlaps in some areas. As for the tent whip, As you even pointed out yourself it is degradable, so even if it is a straight upgrade from the normal whip, it does not replace it. And, from what I've seen of the DH Lance, it's just a melee option to the Dh crossbow and not even better in most cases. Not power creep in the slightest. I'm sure, whether something is or isn't power creep can't truly be answered with yes or no in most cases, I don't think these qualifies. Let's say they added a new scimitar, with the same stats as a D Scim but at 50 atk and no quest req. That would be power creep, through and through, as the D scim would become completely irrelevant, and MM 1 would be just an EXP quest. I think, at least in my understanding of the subject, that you're misrepresenting what power creep is.

I have not touched my acb in 6 months and i have been bossing daily. I can't think of a single usecase for it other than pking when you have a tbow/bp/dhcb.

I mean I see your point but I think we will just have to agree to disagree on the definition. Any amount of power introduced into the game should be considered 'power creep,' especially if you take the 'creep' word literally. The term power creep implies a gradual process, not an instant change. Power creeping into the game gradually is almost always going to be from items that don't directly replace another, rather multiple items that work together to devalue older items, make challenges far easier than they were previously, and just in general, increase the average overall power of the player. As a side note, I believe you're ignoring the micro parts of the game. Sure the Dhunter Cbow doesn't replace other options everywhere, but it is a complete upgrade for dragons. Why does an item have to affect every aspect of the game for it to be considered as adding any type of average power increase?

JosephsPlace you’re still completely misunderstanding what power creep is. It’s not a literal definition of power and creep for one lol. Power creep is exactly what the original commentator said. It’s when a new item comes into the game that makes the older one irrelevant. Whips are still valuable for a variety of reasons including the fact that you need them to charge the upgraded version and the fact that it doesn’t degrade so the tentacle whip isn’t very good for training. It’s not “agree to disagree” there’s is a right and wrong answer here. Power creep is what I explained and the original commentator explained. You simply don’t understand the issue at all.

JosephsPlace the “creep” part of the term comes from the fact that slightly better items come out over and over over time until the older items are completely irrelevant and old content is too easy.

If jagex is worried about power creep they can just add items that are similar to existing items stat wise, but have different and new abilities. They did good with the new pvm wildi items.

Yes. We can have new interesting and even more powerful gear in the same tier. Two examples of this; Barrows aromour and smithing rework of rs3. Barrows goes wide with the armour. Different unique items with diffferent uses and power level. RS3 smithing update introduced refining weapons for increasingly expensive costs for smaller and smaller rewards. Perhaps osrs team could make weapons that are slightly stronger requiring items of old content and new content ensuring the older content doesn't completely die.

Really well set out video. Only thing that I would say is also a very important factor in determining if it’s good power creep is how much it effects the previous BIS equipment. I.e is the previous BIS still good in some other situations or totally redundant after the update etc.

The blowpipe could stand to be nerfed a bit, but without it the whips will just be the best again. RS needs blowpipes and whips in the game nowadays, as they maximize efficiency. What we really need is thoughtful power creep, keeping the game fresh, yet having several niche weapons.

Shervin K fair point, but we’re not all Woox unfortunately, you wouldn’t wanna be focusing on content less than 0.2% of your player base will be able to do! Power creep is inevitable but it’ll be good for the longevity of the game to not have a new “hardest boss in the game” every year/6 months.

BP didn't make fight caves easy, it made it quicker... fight caves can be done with RCB easily, it can be done with karils easily. BCP just saves you 30+ mins

I disagree. Being able to do more damage definitely helps you get out of sticky situations. The BP specifically brought a massive increase to power where you are able to straight up ignore mechanics you had to previously worry about.

The biggest problem causing power creep is the overwhelming slayer playerbase. They only vote slayer related updates and therefore jagex focuses on slayer related updates.

I like how the last criteria touches on economics of availability. Since Zulra is so profitable blowpipe cost is low. Why? Because the drop is extra upon the main reward that comes almost as a by product into the economy. Combined with the ease of acquiring (one minute kills), no risk of catastrophic failure and low cost to enter cause the supply to rise lowering the price of the blowpipe increasing the prelevance of the blowpipe.

Personally, while I'm not totally opposed to new bis gear, I'd much rather see the devs focus on new areas, quests, mobs, and even skills. Side-grade gear does seem a little pointless to me unless it serves a good purpose, but I wouldn't mind having more options when it comes to making money (the same handful of 1m+/hr methods get kind of old), pvming, and just general content to explore. Prices of items could drop if you introduce new monsters but not new items, but this could be balanced, or just accepted, or maybe it makes side-grade gear necessary. Also makes a good case for a balanced amount of supply drops entering the game. Either way would love to have more than like 4 options if I want to make over 1m/hr. Doesn't necessarily bring more money into the game, just spreads out where it's coming from. If they can gradually accomplish this without having to nerf other money making methods, and give us new areas to explore and do this in (should legit make osrs world massive), some quests, and maybe a skill or two and some mini games, I'll play this game until I die of old age.

You want to check powercreep where its possibly most destructive, stop adding gobs of weapons add some relevant near affordable higher tier gear. That actually helps the big issue of top tier armor being completely outclassed by mid/top tier weapons. Justicar armor is nice but it's only high def melee armor. Add some high def range/mage armor also make some slightly lower but much less expensive options. I mean of course at launch they'll be sky high but they'll level off when more pour into the game. Yes new higher tier gear will outclass and reduce the cost of lower gear and also make lower end content easier. But it will also make the higher end game content more doable and more profitable based on more successful trips, faster trips, cheaper trips, and fewer splits needed to efficiently complete it. If you allow a game to stagnate it gets boring think of it this way from level 1-75 attack your always working towards that new weapon more xp/hr after 75 so 75-99 feels like no reason to bother. Yes you get more efficient with levels but not to the same degree as going from addy scim to brine sabre to d scim to whip. Same for armor for most people barrows/bandos caps it. Making those last 20ish levels seen like grinds only for the 99s. I and many other players seen to enjoy the early/mid game more than late game because that sense of growth and accomplishments feels much more worth it.

Remember rune armor crashed addy armor in RSC progress means no one wants the lower tier. I dont see anyone rampaging that iron armor being 1 def ruins the marker for bronze plates. Or that full rune makes cows way to ez.

I think every argument about a new item being too powerful is predicated on it being a slippery slope, about it being a model for healthy, regular updates. But not every update is representative of a regular update, or a gradual progression of things. I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with saying it's time to make a weapon that is a really big dps increase for a combat style, as long as it's more about a change to game dynamics than just another new bis weapon that will be topped again in another couple years, and if the change is called for or wanted then that can be a good thing independent of whether it is a huge power increase, or the barrier to entry is too low, or the last buff to the skill was last week.

Honestly don’t think the bp is all that great, I mean when I kill brutal drags I prefer an rcb acb or dhcb. You just hit harder, bp is great for churning dps against monsters with low def but it can cost an arm and a leg to use it for high tier content.

Using the DHCB at dragons is definitely preferable over the BP; however, in general, the monsters that are good to kill with range will take more damage and it will be overall more efficient to use the BP over a RCB. That isn't a hard set rule, but in general I have found it to be true. A crossbow with certain bolts can have a higher average DPS than a BP at some encounters, but in general the BP should be the default choice.

We have to fight hard against letting jagex nerf things, they need to get better at balancing things upon update. we can't let them get complacent to think that nerfing anything is ok I would also be open to the idea of jagex going back and rebalancing everything to be in correct tiers that's how it was structured until they released barrows gear then everything became about unique items

Yeah honestly it is weird how many of the BiS gear only requires 70cb stats generally. Barrows and Bandos Tassets are the same? What about dhcb and a rune crossbow, they are both 60 range items? A lot of that stuff is endgame and might better be placed in 80+, 85+, or even 90 requirements.

just play rs3 we have power scaling... just being honest, i quit osrs cuz it started to feel out of touch with what it was originally set out to do, a reboot of the game starting from a point in time that didn't have all the updates the community didn't like. the only thing is, its updates that feel like they don't hold up to this ideal. i basically feel like i'm just watching a different way RS3 might of been. instead of reboot of a game holding onto it older ways of doing things. not saying all updates do this, but a lot do a good example of it keeping its classical format was the wildy boss's and rev cave updates. the game basically feels like 2019 car but looks like a 1986 car and this is enough to appease people and convince them its "Old School". also everyone hate's each other and ROT's there also. inb4, (place RS3 is bad joke/comment here). TLDR: osrs has been modernized instead of holding onto its classical format.

Definitely a notable power change, but I don't think its power is over the top. It fits very thematically (with piety already being in place for melee), and while I wish it would be a little more difficult to obtain, I think it's in a fairly good spot. Not perfect, but definitely passable power creep in my opinion.

I've always defined power creep when new content is strictly better than previous one. For example the Grazi rapier vs the zamorakian hasta. I've always hated the idea of "best in slot" on games, since it just hinders the posibility of creative gameplay and engaging content, it just destroys deicision making. The good kind of new content are those that make yu take decisions, having oportunity costs, etc. Not just "now we do this because its new!". So when you make new content around not better numbers, but different mechanics you can keep old content still relevant and also expand the game at the same time. OSRS has done both, but they still go around with "best in slot" mechanics sometimes.

The main issue is balance if improvements are released in too quick succession. Other MMOs handle this improvement by releasing regular expansions that includes more difficult content and a higher power of gear; however, OSRS doesn't use this model. Because of that, all content in the game is made to always be active content, meaning if too many power increases come in a short amount of time, there will be many balance issue with that previous content.

While it's a business to get new players, it's also a business of keeping existing players. Ever moving goal posts and devaluation of achievements doesn't make for great player retention. Those were examples. I don't see why all examples have to be current. They are items in the game I could use to give a practical example. The game gets harder sure, but because of the way osrs does progression, balance is important. Other MMOs have, like I said, expansions whichs masks huge jumps in power, osrs can't do that. Other MMOs immediately devalue not current content, osrs can't do that. While I agree power creep is necessary, there is also a balance that needs to be struck in order to do things optimally, and that's what I was trying to show in this video.
