Schecter started life as an unofficial custom shop for Fender guitars and a maker of replacement parts mostly for Fender guitars. Also, Schecter pre dates their Metal guitar era by quite a bit, and in the US custom shop, they never stopped making old school style guitars along with fancier version of many of their production models. The production (import) guitars were mostly modern spec guitars because that's what customers were buying.

Fuji-Gen really does deserve the "legendary" descriptor. They've been making top-tier production guitars for ages. Their in-house FGN guitars are sleeper "best value for money' instruments. I've had a couple MiJ Schecters (earlier stuff). Dunno if they were Fuji-Gen, but they were definitely typical Japanese guitars: impeccable fit and finish, great necks, quality hardware, etc. This new series is _really_ attractive. I don't need an HSS guitar right now (love my Infinite), but I'll take a look at what they're offering. Maybe a bit easier for me to do than for some: I live in Japan. I've been playing (and gigging with) mostly Japanese guitars for a good few years now. Only one non-Japanese guitar in my current rotation (a quite nice 2020 Les Paul Standard, actually...Gibson seem to be getting their act together), with instruments from Infinite, ESP, G-Life, and Kino Factory. As you say, the world-class quality is consistent, the necks always seem to work for me, and they tend to make smart component choices.

I play Schecter basses exclusively (not endorsed). It's wild to see not only the models they don't market heavily but also all of the variations of the same model over the years. One model will have diamond inlays while the next has crosses/ dashed lines/none or only the 12th fret marker but one year has one diamond while another has 2 and another has offset dots etc.

Not related to the guitar at all, but i'm stoked to see II II II II here. It's become a go to of mine as i can get a pseudo-quad track by comping outtakes from recording my L and R guitars onto a center panned 3rd track and putting II II II II in Mono/Stereo mode on that 3rd track. Massive time saver for song demos.

I got lucky, the very first decent guitar i bought used off Craigslist, a Schecter Omen Extreme FR. I paid $300, no clue how old it is but the frets have wear so at least a few years prior to 2021. It's got 5 ply binding on the body neck and headstock, beautiful intricate fret inlays, a gorgeous rosewood fretboard, beautiful quilt top, coil splits, Floyd Rose and deep comfort cuts. You get so much for your money, and they're so high quality.

Schecter makes the best looking guitar bodies and paint jobs. But they always seem to want to use the headstocks with 3 tuning pegs on each side instead of the 6 on one side like this one. Schecter needs to give more options on bridges, they either force Floyd Rose or through-body bridges, not enough regular trem bridges. Also reading comments at online stores I see that Schecter has a problem with buzzing frets on their mid-range sub-$1K guitars....not cool.
@willtato87788 ай бұрын
If you're fine with the drop-top style guitars (no carve), then the JDM Schecter JP catalogue has a few with the compact trems (2-post 510 style). Normal models cost approx that range in the country of origin, but as expected from japan (with the exception of Vola), anything under a few thousand dollars you'll get veneers over plain maple caps as opposed to a proper figured cap (exceed series). From the Schecter US site, yes, the figure on this cali classic is also just a veneer.
@monkeyrater8 ай бұрын
@@willtato8778 Im totally ok with veneers instead of glueing a half inch maple cap. Even Gibson glues on white bindings to cover the maple cap on the Les Paul. So why not just forget thick wood caps and just use veneers with bindings like Schecter does?
@willtato87788 ай бұрын
@@monkeyrater you're exactly right. Veneers at a price point are good solutions. However, for $2.5k?! It's really hard justifying that price for a veneer. For not much more (relatively), you can get (as mentioned) a les Paul with a proper cap, binding (which isn't a small task) and other complications such as the set-neck, while being done with American Labour.

I'm a huge Schecter fan and my dream guitar would most certainly be one of their custom shop models. So I think it's really cool they've introduced these MIJ models as a higher quality import line. And I do think their pickups sound great, especially the single coils. However, when it comes to spending my own money, I think I would be a lot more tempted by Vola. They are literally half the price! Plus I do really enjoy having lots of fun features to play around with and Vola give you a load of tone variations such as being able to switch between series/parallel/single coil on the bridge humbucker, adding in the neck pickup separately and more. For the price Schecter are charging it would've been nice to have seen them load these MIJs with features like that. They do seem to have one unique feature that I've only seen mentioned in one demo - the single coils can be tapped, a completely separate feature to the coil split on the bridge. So you can get more vintage tones from the single coils with that feature. The other thing that puts me off a little is the chunkier, more vintage style neck heel. The sculpted heel you get on Ibanez Prestige and newer Vola models looks nicer. Not that it really makes a big difference playing but is certainly more aesthetically pleasing. Perhaps they wanted to make sure the metal brand plate on the back was nice and big! Seen as I mentioned the Volas, it's actually from watching Hunter's videos that I took notice of them. Planning on swapping my Ibanez Prestige AZ 7 string HSS for a Vola actually as there aren't many 7 string HSS models around, and the Volas have a slimmer neck and flatter radius which I would definitely prefer. However I am planning on getting a Schecter for my first 6 string HSS guitar - not this California Classic though, like I'm getting at earlier in my comment, it's just too expensive for me. I suppose for some people the Japanese quality together with the Schecter brand, looks and pickups will be worth it. I'm gonna go for the MV-6 which is one of their Indoensian models, but gonna replace the pickups with some of their proper USA ones.
