Let's talk about the Pioneer PL-A45D

I still have my PL-A45D turntable that purchased in Okinawa Japan while serving in the USAF and it works just fine. I also have my Kenwood amp model KR-5400 purchased the same time.

Very nice presentation of the Pionneer PL -A 45DI just bought (still on my car rear seat...) I didn't know the arm was motorised by his own and had planned as usually to degrease that' solid' oil for the autommatic function be relieble.of course i'm to verify everything and relubricate the platter ax axis and both motor bearing. Great player. I got one for free about a year ago. It was up in someones attic for years. It's a bit clunky still, I don't know much about servicing one. I greased/oiled the platter bearing as well. It still makes a ever so slightly motor noise when the tonearm drops on the record. It's a low volume hum that comes through. I can tell it's the motor noise coming through, I put my ear up to platter and can hear it when it's spinning. Not sure how to correct this. It has a Shure M75ED cartridge, new stylus. Not too bad for a free turntable. Anyways thanks for posting about this turntable....

I ended up buying two of these on eBay because nobody understands how to ship them. I was able to build one really nice one from both. I added a Nagaoka MP-110 Cartridge and it sounds amazing. I also have a PL-35 and they both share the same mechanism and covers. One of the mats I received was hard like yours. Glad there was one in good shape.

Good call on the MP110. And careful there, they are unobtainable now. I have yet to audit the new Nagaoka cartridges, hope they are as good as the MP-series. As for shipping, yeah... Check the PL-12D video I just uploaded, there's a photo in it of how I once received a PL12D :(.

I can't really grumble about my PL12D as I was given it by my Sociology tutor in 1985 for free, which replaced a Garrard 86 SB auto given to me by my dad (also for free). In turn the 12D was replaced by a Linn Basik in the 90s, which died on me, so at least the PL12D lasted longer than the Linn and was brought back out of retirement. I put the K5 cartridge on the 12D. The stylus is long overdue a replacement. I understand the ATN95E will fit the K5? If it doesn't I have an unopened AT95 cartridge that I can use (new old stock). I feel emotionally tied to my PL12D - a bit like you and your Akai reel to reel - which I have connected to my Audiolab 8000C/P amp. My Sondek isn't working due to a broken Ortofon stylus in an alcohol related accident (oops!), and the Dual CS505-2 needs a service. The 505 was also given to me for free by a friend when he got rid of his vinyl collection. Great video Stijn, I was unaware of the A45D. Liked!

Read carefully: it is the at-95e stylus that fits the linn k5, NOT the at-vm95e. The vm is the current cartridge, the at-95e is its predecessor. Stylus is still available though so you should be good. It looks a bit wonky (the k5 is slightly shorter than the 95) but it works fine. So the stylus of your at95 should fit just fine, if it is the old (non vm) model. Why not mount that cart in the sonndek though? Most Ortofons are easily beaten :) 505s usually work fine with a new belt for the pitch and a new spark killer (or you just ignore that the old spark killer has gone up in a puff of smoke). Goes without saying; the sonndek, I presume an lp12, is by far your best record player. Depending on which arm is on that I would invest in a nice cart for that one :). Happy you like the video!! 😁

Definitely the Pioneer, you need to go P5 or up to get something as musical sounding. But here's a golden tip; Buy a Pioneer PL-112D. It may not look as nice and retro, but my goodness they are great sounding record players. Pair it with an AudioTechnica AT-VM95E and you're golden. That said, there's no point in investing in a record player if you don't have a phono preamplifier, amplifier and speakers to match it. So; What do you have, otherwise? Let's make sure you upgrade the weakest links first ;).

@@rollingtroll well.. to be honest, I haven't bought any speakers yet... I've found my father's Denon PMA-280 and I only have some Bose speakers that I could use for this new Hi-fi system.. as I said, I'm new to this world 😅 do you have any suggestions?

I have this model. Has been serviced but still can't run at right speed and sometimes won't even start to turn. Motor and turntable move freely when belt off
