#WestSideStory is, of course, based on the 1957 #Broadway musical of the same name. It was first adapted into a film in 1961 where it won 10 Academy awards, including Best Picture.
Steven Spielberg’s new adaption will be hitting theaters this December 10th!
Last week at the #AcademyAwards , we got to see the very first teaser trailer-- so let's get nerdy with it & discuss WEST SIDE STORY!
Here's some background on the NEW adaption, courtesy of wikipedia!
West Side Story is an upcoming American romantic musical drama film directed and co-produced by Steven Spielberg, with a screenplay by Tony Kushner and choreography by Justin Peck. The film is an adaptation of the 1957 Broadway musical of the same name by Arthur Laurents, Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim, which is based loosely on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The film's screenplay is expected to hew more closely to the Broadway script than to the 1961 film adaptation directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins. It stars Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler, with Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez, Mike Faist, Josh Andrés Rivera, Ana Isabelle, Corey Stoll and Brian d'Arcy James, as well as Rita Moreno, a star of the 1961 film, appearing in a supporting role.

I was screaming at the cinematography, oH MY PATTI LUPONE IT IS GORGEOUS. But I'm the most excited for the gym dance scene, America and A Boy Like That because those numbers literally are the most iconic parts of West Side Story. AAAND I think it’s funny that Ben is returning to WSS since he played Riff on Broadway as well! (But unfortunately had to leave due to an injury) But yeah I’m SOO excited. Steven Spielberg's West Side Story looks like it's going to be a masterpiece! The teaser trailer is perfect with Somewhere playing just enough to give us a taste of what's coming. West Side Story is my favorite musical and the trailer was amazing i teared up and I love how Rita Moreno is gonna be in this it's pretty much like paying tribute to the original movie. Also a whole group of talented stars like Ariana Debose, and Rachel Zeigler as well as Ben Cook who is in the reimagined revival. I'm glad that even though we know what Ansel did was awful we won't let him ruined the hard work that the cast did for this movie same with Amar in The amazing dark revival currently on Broadway which almost all the cast are newcomers. I'm really excited to see this and the revival. Steven Spielberg is amazing and I can't to see his West Side Story.

I love that Rachel Zegler is 19. Natalie Woods was great, but she wasn't Latina and she was clearly an adult. When my youth theater did it and every actor was 15-18, you FELT it in a way you just don't when everybody's a grown up. "Who let these children have knives?!?!"

This was by far the most exciting part of the Oscars. Expectations for this movie are so high, it better be good. I was surprised to hear Rita sing Somewhere. I never been so hyped to see a Speilberg movie on the big screen. Been a fan of WSS since my high school days. The original movie to be exact. Been excited since Ms. Moreno was announced to do this remake. Alyssa in The Prom a good test of Arianas song and dance skills. But playing Anita should showcase her as a true triple threat. I’m usually not a sad ending fan. But I love almost every song in the score

It looks very similar to the original, which makes me wonder why it is necessary as a remake. It also makes me wonder if there will be significant changes to the script -- the lack of dialogue in the trailer may indicate that this is the case. However, none of this is me being not excited about the film. It looks fantastic. I am especially excited to see it with Steven Spielberg's cinematography. The shadow shot is incredible.

I'd love to hear your thoughts, Kat, about the casting in terms of race. A lot of people are saying, "this didn't need a remake, the original is perfect. But if we're honest, Natalie Wood was grossly miscast. We would say an actor in blackface makeup was despicable, why is turning a Russian actress into a Puerto Rican woman different? Not to mention she didn't do her own singing and that just makes me crazy There is definitely magic in the original film but I'm excited to see how the racial tension and cultural observations will be better portrayed and respected compared to the original film.

I LOVED IT!!! OMG my jaw was on the FLOOR when I saw it!! Also the last time I watched West Side Story was on 2 4hr flight to and from Dallas Texas cuz it was the longest movie that could keep my mind and anxiety occupied during the flight😂😂😂

Anything that deals with West Side Story gets me so hyped. I think it has a story that really gets the audience engaged. This might sound very weird, but I am curious how violent some of these scenes will get (I.e. some fights between the two gangs, trying not to spoil :)). It is an aspect that puts a lot of interest in the show, I am just pumped

When the trailer was released I was in the middle of a hectic schedule, everything was just a chaos. I was writing notes while rolling in my bed every other minute like a freaking hotdog HAHAHAHA and screaming at the top of my lungs while organizing my schedule. I literally died and went back to life that day. Thankfully I finished all of my works and finished my life as well. 😗

Thank you for summing up how I feel about Ansel Elgort being in this movie!!! While I am not a fan of him and what he did, this cast needs to be supported since Speilberg fixed some casting wrongs from the original film. Representation matters! I’m supporting this film for all the newbies who are finally getting a chance!
